@@shotbyagirl1 welp, luckily there *are* some people who value craftsmanship and will pay for it! The real issue (I think) is that most people aren’t paid a wage that allows them to invest in beautifully crafted things. As a craftsperson, it’s very sad that we’re now trapped in a consumerist economy where the only option for most people is cheap mass produced objects 😞 but!! There are still people who work hard to support independent craftspeople and it warms my heart ❤

I make quilts. There cuddle quilts because they cover 2 people . Just for the top material it cost about $100.00 then the batting then the back Sometimes I can make them cheaper when I get a good price on the supplies. I'm not even taking about the thread or my time & labor. I have to service my sewing machine as well. People complain about the price. They want to offer me $25.00 or $30.00 for 1 & then get offered when I reject their generous offer.

When I started crafting my goods, I didn't start with what I make now. I made small, simple wallets and other things out of thrifted shirts and clearance-priced fabrics and supplies, using an inherited 35 year old sewing machine that bound up at every turn. But I stuck with it. Over time I made enough money to buy a new machine and then to start using nicer materials. After 20+ years, you'd probably say the same about me without any consideration for how long and hard I worked to get to the skill level and tools I have now. Sure, you could run out and "buy expensive leather and tools" on day one, but unless you spend time learning and honing your craft, you're just making crappy garbage with expensive leather and tools.

I once had a customer in my store that had this amazing purse out of the top part of old jeans. I asked if she made it, she said no her best friend did. It was lined with horse print fabric, used all of the original pockets, had arm handles as well as a crossbody strap, and fabric added to give it a zippered top opening. And some sort of hard inside structure to give it shape. It was very nice, she received it as a birthday gift. This was maybe ten years ago. I hadn't seen a hand made denim purse since I made my old jeans into one back in 1975. I used a bathrobe belt run thru the belt loops to close it and a strap. Used Stitch Witchery iron on to close the leg holes up for the bottom. Nothing fancy, but it worked. Your purse on the other hand, is a work of art, and a lot of hard work. Thank you for the video, greatly appreciated. Take care, stay safe, have a nice day. 👵✌️🖖 🙉🙈🙊 🌎☮️🕊️

$5,000 is *way* steep for what you see here. After watching the video several times, here's the list of tools and supplies I observed: jeans, leather, sewing machine, scissors, leather knife, cutting mat, ruler, bone folder, awl, lacing chisel, compass/wing divider, needles, thread, snap, snap setter, anvil, cardboard and paper. I took about a half-hour looking at Jo-Ann's and Tandy leather supply online to come up with a price list. I didn't pick the cheapest thing in each category, and I didn't subdivide for the price of a single item when things came in packs. I assumed he already had some paper and cardboard lying around, as well as the ballpoint pen he used to draw up the plans and the old jeans themselves. I also assumed he got a whole side of really nice veg-tan leather. *My total for this entire list of tools and supplies was $708.63.* So, not even $1,000 for tools you will use over and over again and materials that will make this project and several others. You could cut this total down even further by getting cheaper leather, skipping redundant or not-strictly-necessary things like the anvil or the lacing chisel, etc.
