@@VictoriaNoe00you made me laugh so hard multiple times, & I showed my hubby. When you were making the shams I told him, she's not using 2 pcs. of fabric for the back!, & sure enough, when I resumed watching the following day, you were cutting the back in two. Ugh. I loved your attitude! Reminds me of my granddaughters. The eldest one sews her own purses & some clothes, etc. They also "fly by the seat of their pants", lol I'm sure you've heard that saying. I've done a lot of that myself, but now that I'm older, I do very little of that. I like patterns, even tho' they can have errors, I've learned. I'm a fairly new quilter myself. I smiled when you'd call your blocks "squares". You said you were proud of yourself, but I'm also very proud of you! Seriously.Your quilt IS BEAUTIFUL!! I Loved that you called it homemade-looking, & that's a sweet thing. I just love that star pattern you used. Where can I find it? What's the name of it? Thx for your help. And thank you for sharing your quilting journey. It was a great video to watch and I'm going to share it, hoping others will enjoy as much as I have. Love ya! PS. Beautiful Quilt, pillow shams and sweatshirt! You did a great job :) You may want to add a Quilt Label (lots of videos available showing how-to) to the back with your name, city, state and the year. I didn't add them when I first started quilting, but always do now. Best hint I can give you is to start quilting the layers together from the center and work out, it helps keep the layers more smooth. When you make another quilt, look at "spray or pin basting" to keep the layers together. Thanks for the fun video Victoria, I enjoyed it and it reminded me of my first quilt!

Your quilt and shams turned out amazing!! Thread bunnies/leaders really help cut back on the fabric being eaten. Or starting with the needle down. Don't let the fabric snobs tell you what fabric to use. Same with the thread snobs. Use what YOU like and what's in YOUR budget. Keep an eye out on the secondary market sites if and when you're ready to upgrade your machine. You can also look at local quilt stores for used machines. If you don't see yourself using the hundreds of decorative stitches, save your money and get a machine with less bells and whistles. A straight stitch plate is great to have. You can learn everything you need to know on YT. The videos are endless. Next time you have a project with a million and one half square triangles, look on YT how to make four or more at a time. Ignore the quilt police. They will suck the fun right out of quilting. To sew your next block on to your clothes, if your machine doesn't have a free arm, you can clip the back up and out of the way as much as possible, scrunch up the bottom of the top as much as possible and stick it under the needle. You could also cheat using Heat n Bond heavy duty and just iron it on and your done (you'll want to sew the backing on to the top with the right/pretty sides of your fabric leaving a small turning gap, turn right side out so you don't have raw edges)...the heavy duty Heat n Bond is pretty stiff though. Or you can use Heat n Bond lite to iron it on and sew it on. Forgot...you can always give quilt as you go a shot (several different methods) for your next quilt...definitely make it easier with the small throat space.

@@VictoriaNoe00let me add that I still sometimes use pieces of sheets for backing small quilted wall-hangings, or borders on them, but Truth be told, sheet material has a much denser thread count and makes it difficult for the needle to penetrate. Your thread may break more. You can purchase muslin for the back in very wide widths, inexpensively. Sometimes other fabric is applied as backing by using wide strips, say 3 or 4. As others have kindly stated, keep at it, watch tutorials, take some classes, but realize it's very addictive and can control your life, IF YOU ALLOW IT. My personal rule is to not start sewing (or cutting, etc) till I have my other priorities taken care of. That's because you risk not getting anything else done, as you've probably learned. But you may have more available time than me, so enjoy your youth! Youre a beautiful woman. PS I love baking, too, like you. I follow a vegan diet. Vegan baking is a whole new ballgame!! Bye!

I agree with others who suggested watching more videos -- especially Donna Jordan with Jordan Fabrics. I've been quilting for 20+ years, and I still learn things from her videos. Girl, you rocked it! Nothing prettier than a blue and white quilt. My suggestions: load a bunch of bobbins at once, big time saver; don’t back stitch, saves 29:19 time and thread; it’s not like sewing apparel. Also clean the fuzz out of your bobbin. I had to laugh when I saw your bobbin assembly fall apart. I am now using my mom’s machine and it has the same assembly. I just want to scream when I have to do anything with the bobbin. It is a pain

Chain piecing is your friend here! Also, you can make half square triangles with squares. Place them right sides together, draw a line connecting two corners, and sew 1/4" from each side of the line, then cut the line. Boom! 2 half square triangles! A couple tips for your next quilted project!
@MrsBrit17 ай бұрын
Safety pins! Use safety pins to baste the quilt layers together. Roll the quilt from two sides. It will fit under your machine (yes! Even a basic domestic!), it's easier to control, and the rolls are easier on your hands. Also, if you want to make another quilt on a machine, a walking foot will also help!
@MrsBrit17 ай бұрын
As for sewing the shirt on the machine, taking the front piece off usually results in a way to sew around a garment. There's like a little arm with a bit of space underneath the machine where you can put the back of the shirt (in this instance) instead of trying to wrangle it under the flat deck of the machine while opening the shirt up. Hope that makes sense! It's also great when sewing sleeves and hems, etc.

Victoria, I would advise you to follow the various pieces of advice you have received in the comments. It is a lovely quilt top and your hard work has been successful. Yes, definitely get a newer machine, or get the one you have serviced. If you are using a sewing machine as much as this, it should be regularly serviced. Even a new machine will still need servicing at some point. Yes, get good quality fabric, cotton quilting fabric is the best. It handles better, sews better and gives a better finish. There is an easier way to make the squares you used rather than cutting triangles and sewing them. There is a lot of information in various books, patterns and other such making videos that can explain this to you. Also these books etc. give you advice on pressing seams. Yes, there is a lot of pressing, but you don’t have to press them open, you can press them so seams can nest with other seams. Please use cutting rulers and a cutting mat, it will reduce the injuries and the cutting will be more accurate, though there is an art to this cutting. Again, the books etc. explain this. Please cut on the table you use to sew on with your machine and press the fabric first and make sure you have room to work. Use an iron and ironing board, much easier. I would recommend The Quilters Bible by Linda Clements. I wish I had found this book before I started my journey. I now have a number of books and patterns. Please enjoy your journey and remember, this is your first quilt, label it and enjoy the journey you have started. I look forward to your progress.

I am amazed that you designed your own pattern and quilted it on that tiny machine. With my first quilt I just sewed 5 inch squares together. There are so many tips I could tell you but I will just share three. Buy fabric from a quilt store - it's better quality & easier to work with (they have stuff on sale). Also square up each block - I didn't do that at first, but when I did it was so much easier to sew the squares together when they are all the same size. Buy a better machine, you could get a used one that someone has traded in. You have a lot of potential as a quilter to accomplish this as your first quilt. I'm a new subscriber and I'm excited to see your next quilting project. BTW I also live in KY and our daughter graduated from UK.

Wow you are a winner! 🏆 That’s is a huge project as a first quilt, well done! Go and watch a couple of Melanie K Ham’s sewing tutorials. She was my inspiration, sadly she has passed, but she was a fantastic tutor and have loads of brilliant ideas on offer. Don’t stop quilting doll, even with the cutting and ironing that you don’t like, it will become easier. Get yourself a table to iron on, you will find it much easier 😉 I so enjoyed your video, you had me in stitches with your foot on the table. Wish it was that flexible, I will break in half 😂 I will be following you for future projects, thank for sharing ❤️🌹🏆🌹🏆🌹❤️

Awesome job. I have so many things I would tell you. But I’m not a quilting police lol. KZbin was my teacher and still is. I want to learn to quilt so I started watching KZbin. I want to come to your house and help me with your quilt. But it wouldn’t be your quilt you did a great job. Just keep trying and you’ll get it. God bless you and your family have a blessed morning.

I started quilting with my husbands tape measure a pencil and a pair of scissors. After the first quilt I swore it was the last. Over 15 years later I still quilt.

I just wanted to say that I noticed you turning the wheel away from you when lifting the needle. You need to turn it towards you. My 1st machine was a front loaded and I hated it. All my current machines are top loaders. Well done on your first quilt.

Always remember to open and clean your bobbin carrier, change your needle every 8 hours of sewing. It's more important than you realize to keep your machine clean.

Do yourself a favor and purchase rotary cutter rulers and or squares. They are game changers and you’ll probably never cut yourself again. This was a huge undertaking for a first project. With everything, practice makes perfect, or something close to it.

To get your sweatshirt on your machine you leave off that extra white piece that you remove to install the bobbin. If you Google it you will see.

You did a wonderful job Victoria. I think it would help you to watch Missouri star Jordan fabrics and Monica Poole. I think you would benefit greatly from it. I’ve been sewing for years and I found their method of quilting and generally sewing much better than my own. I too was told by my grandmothers mother and aunts. I even took sewing classes in high school and I never seen such techniques like theirs that was as easy as theirs.

Hi Victoria. I wrote a comment a few days ago. I watched a few more mins of your video again & realized you didn't know the answer to the name of the star. Wish I could get that pattern. I luv it!! You did an awesome job! Just shared it with my eldest granddaughter (maybe about your age). If you learn that pattern name, will you share it with me? Thx so very much 💜
@VictoriaNoe007 ай бұрын
Hi Catherine! I had someone comment the name! It is a "Le Monye Star pattern", Thank you so much for watching and enjoying my videos! ☺💕
@TheStaffOfLife7 ай бұрын
@@VictoriaNoe00 thank you so very much for sharing the name with me. I had taken a few screen shots in your video of the drawing & subsequent construction of the paper pattern & that was helpful; but knowing the name I was able to find explicit instructions to creating it. Again, thankx much!!! It's beautiful and not as difficult as it appears. YES!! Color choice is the secret and you nailed it!!!

your hooked on sewing, that's wonderful and exciting to see, do yourself a favor go to a quilt shop and take a quilting 101 class. it was so amazing when someone shows you the easy way it's done. it seems all I self-taught myself was a lot of bad habits that I'm still trying to break today it's well worth the money plus there are people there that get and understand your passion.

Nice job for a newbie! Really! Buy more bobbins. Either look up the size on the internet by your machine model or take one to the store with. (Brothers are usually 15J, but check). Before you start sewing, wind several (4+). Less irritating to load a bobbin, than having to wind. a. bobbin. every. time. Get a small cutting mat to use and a ruler, atleast 12" long. After you finish a square, you trim them down, all to the same size. Sheets are economical but are hard on your machine and needle (change your needle each project!). They are woven very tight. If in the future you want a quilt longarmed, most longarmers won't accept them as a backing. I could go on for days with advice.... have sewn over 50 yrs, apparel, upholstery, draperies, quilting. Watch more YT sewing channels! Trust me, the lady teaching at Joann's is nor a pro - i worked there 9 yrs. Want cheap fabric? Get a job at Joann's. 30% off, even sale items AND sewing machines!!!
