Just getting into bow-fishing with an old 'Bear' fiberglass bow and a 30 year old Barrett pistol crossbow with a spincast reel on the X-bow and a "hand-wrapped spool" from an aluminum drinking bottle on the bow. Been making my own arrows/bolts for fishing by drilling a small hole for some stainless steel wire I have though the rear portion on the point on one type and simply bend the wire back at a 60 degree angle, while with the x-bow bolts I use a quarter of an inch steel shoulder bolt in a mount I have, then make one complete wrap of the bolt and then after twisting both barbs once around each other I then bend each side backwards also at 60 degrees opposite of each other, and just short of a small bear will hold anything I'm going after. But Thank you for your idea as it about 85% "there" and the only thing one needs to do is simply clip one side and then sharpen it to match the other side. By the way, I noticed you didn't sharpen the points on yours - any reason why not (?), or is it because they're going to impale the fish anyway? Thanks for sharing.
@JTBear4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great comment! I didn't bother to sharpen the points because I figured the brute force of impact would do the trick. Thanks for watching!

I got a couple cheap fishing leaders that have two even halves with a swivel and lead weight in the center and cut the swivels and all off leaving two steel braided wires roughly a foot long with eyes on each end and unscrew the head off put one steel loop over the arrow threads and screw it back on tight and then all you need is a swivel and clasp on the string from your bow to connect them all quickly and easily
@JTBear5 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a better solution than this but I'm a firm believer in using what I have on hand if I can. Glad that's working out for you!

I've done a wire collar really similar to that to make a small game head that wouldn't bury itself. Works like a charm for a few shots but the wire will eventually begin unwrapping. Not to mention you'll wanna screw the head on with pliers or it'll almost immediately begin coming loose.

@JTBear4 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I would recommend making a homemade bow instead of trying something like this with a crossbow. It doesn't take much power to spear a fish and a crossbow might just be a bit too much energy for the job. You probably could convert a bolt for it, but I wouldn't. Good luck, play safe!

Broadheader is both right and wrong on this. It is true that the safety pin has a bad habit of bending or deforming when you hit something with the arrow that you're not supposed to but at the same time if you actually nail the fish itself, it works just fine. The thing is, any arrow tip will get damaged if you hit something you're not supposed to hit. A rock seems to be the biggest culprit. As for the slider line, I would keep the barrel swivel, but scale it up a size or two for strength, and then use paracord where the line going along the shaft is wrapped around itself to minimize size. I would then use something like nail hardener or superglue to finalize those wraps. It's a DIY arrow, so it's not going to be professional grade. DIY isn't supposed to look pretty, it's just supposed to work. That's the beauty of it. The fact you can make it look professional with a safety pin and a field point is actually pretty damn clever in my book.
@JTBear7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for all the feedback!
@The_Nonchalant_Shallot7 жыл бұрын
You're quite welcome, my friend. I myself have used a safety pin tonight to create my own fishing arrow. I took a high quality commercial length of paracord and removed the inner strands. After cutting neatly and gently melting the 2 ends of one of these inner strands for convenience, I then proceeded to wrap the strand around itself to secure it along the shaft for both strength and to help minimize the increase in diameter. I then used superglue to soak both wraps entirely, being extra careful NOT to get any on the line itself so as to ensure that the strands were no weakened by the superglue. The concept behind this is the same as ripping a phone book in half. Together, the pages are strong, but if you bend the phone book so that the pages gradually become out of sync, they rip much much easier. At least, that was the logic behind it. After allowing that to dry, I mixed up a very tiny amount of loctite 2 part epoxy to both coat the superglue as well as the very beginning of the strands, placing 2 pencils as close as possible to the wraps between the line and the shaft so as to "lift" the line away from the shaft without weakening it. The logic behind this is that when the epoxy dries and cures, and after the arrow is actually fired, the swivel barrel then slides down the line but hits the epoxy instead of the line or wrap itself, thereby protecting the line. Afterwards, I epoxied the nock into the shaft (because this was one of my hunting arrows that hit a rock and the shaft split lol) to secure it and help keep the shaft together at the same time. THEN, using your idea, I carefully cut and molded the safety pin around a bullet point before removing it and heating it up with a lit candle until red hot and then quenching it in vegetable oil lol All this work and I'm still pretty confident that it will either break after the first shot or after a few shots but still so much fun to make. Thanks for the inspiration

Why do you need the barrel swivel with the line
@daveii3122 жыл бұрын
A swivel helps to overcome/ prevent any extra twist in the line, making snarled line a rare thing, and (perhaps, over time) extending the life of the line itself. One of the 1st things I learned as a kid (growing up, learning serious bass fishing with my father and umpteen cousins on Lake of the Ozarks) was to let out all of my line and then reel it in while holding onto it between 2 fingers... most importantly, do this when first using *new* line. ** NOTE: Make sure to Let your skipper know that you are doing this so he can avoid making any maneuvers with the boat that might snarl/wrap the line around the propeller shaft.**

everything seems correct but that arrow will not go in the water...it will float right away...you need a heavier arrow..try filling it with led or sand...you need at least 88 grams to hit fish half a foot deep in the water and have the arrow pierce it from side to side...

if you still need an idea for the reel what I did was take a broken fishing pole cut what was left of the pole off and cut off the handle only thing that was left was the part that holds the reel and go to your local hardware store and get a piece of allthread that threads into your bow where your stabilizer goes and drill a hole thru the reel mount and put a bolt on the end and thread the other end into your bow and put a spinning reel on it just remember to hit the release before you shoot

nope, it doesn't work well; the second your tip hits water bottom the safety pin will just bend backwords when you pull it out; trust me, i've done it and that happened; a safety pin is just not strong enough you need smth stronger
@JTBear9 жыл бұрын
+Broadheader - Too bad, it seemed like such a good idea to! What would you recommend instead of the safety pin?
@Broadheader9 жыл бұрын
well i ended up buying a fishing arrow; this too wasn't good enough since after just a few shots the tip had fallen off and lost it in the water; since then i've been using screws cut through the middle and screwed on to the main tip of the arrow, the one glued to the shaft. i recommend buying a fishing arrow and use it as so; it's just like when hunting: u wanna go bowhunting u need broadheads; improvizations won't give you the same satisfaction
