I never realized that language learning is a lifestyle similar to exercising, but I totally agree!

It's damn hard to maintain multiples languages at a time when our job has nothing to do with foreign languages and we have other priorities. You can dream of becoming a polyglot when you are young, when you have time, but later in life, it might become very tough to keep the habit of learning foreign languages everyday. It does take time to master a language though, unless you don't aim at doing so and take language learning only as a form of entertainment. It's cool to be able to speak different languages, but not being able to speak them fluently after years is also frustrating. When I was a college grad, I tried to learn 7 different languages, but 8 years later, I've mastered only 2 out of 7, the rest stops at very basic conversations.

This is so true…. I used to be fluent in German .. but 10 years later the only thing that I can introduce myself 😢 so frustrating, and also having a normal job what nothing to do with languages makes it hard to practice them. I also had the goal 7….. I speak 2 fluently… well I just changed the 7 to 5😅 hope I can get there… but working in a hospital full time and study it’s really tough

Yeah, it's not easy. One thing that is often overlooked in language learning communities is maintaining the native language. Because it does take a hit when you learn another language. It's not necessarily anything dramatic, but it does have measurable effects on things like response time to activate vocabulary, etc. In fact, native language regulation starts to get really interesting when you start to learn your L3. Because your brain has essentially learned now how to better regulate the native language and minimise the "negative" impact of learning another language on it. It then creates more "desirable difficulties", meaning than when learning your L3, you're actually slower on a lot of things than when you learn your L2. Slower, but also better in the long run. You see this in bilinguals, who are much much slower in learning new vocabulary than monolinguals. Yet, they're also much better at remembering the new vocabulary once they do learn it. It also raises some interesting questions regarding whether "nativeness" should be used as a benchmark or not. Because you can very well reach a point where on many different metrics you are actually more proficient in an L2 or L3 than in your native language.

I do the same thing! I’m fluent in korean, English, and Spanish. I’m a Spanish major in undergrad in Maryland now, so I am using Spanish everyday. But even before I ever took Spanish class, I learned the language through salsa dancing since I was little. I fell in love with Spanish music and sang along but wanted to know what they were saying. For English, I live in America and I live with my Korean mom so I get Korean everyday too. It’s definitely hard for me to learn more languages at a high level. I’ve tried to learn german for 2 years by myself but never really progressed. And I can understand decent portuguese, french, and italian because it’s similar to spanish. But finding the time for all the languages is definitely hard if it’s more than 3 i think

I like this video. I do think learning is not my thing in general but I need to to survive in a new country. also to have better relationship with my future in laws(currently still dating) . I think once I know four languages it is enough. I like this advice but I am stuck at the very beginning of learning a language because I hate learning. it seems like i cant find the right method to learn, but every once in a while i remember something I learned in that language and i just start repeating it over and over because i do not want to forget it. putting on shows and audiobooks in a new language really helps I already do that I have some workbooks that seem to work well but I prefer learning from pictures.

This is a bit of a weird question, but do you have any tips on how to improve your native language? A lot of us, myself included, learnt a language from birth but never formally studied it in school, and I can definitely communicate perfectly well, but I can't form complex sentences (for instance, I couldn't say all this in my native language.) It probably won't make sense to start from scratch, especially when you speak a dialect that's not standard. I'd really appreciate any input! Thank you! Love your videos!
@phoenixhou44863 жыл бұрын
You’re lucky to be raised bilingual! I’m afraid my advice wouldn’t be too useful since it’s not my case. But I guess some more sophisticated input, like tv shows on politics or newspaper articles would help.

I couldn't relate more to what you say on this video. I am a native Spanish speaker, and learnt English as a second language and French as my third. I am currently learning German and Swedish at the same time. (not sure if it is the best idea to study them both at the same time). But yeah, I could say it is hard to maintain the other three languages. My brain plays jokes on me and makes me think of things three times before saying them, sometimes I listen to people speak and my brain tricks me into thinking they are speaking another language when it´s english, it´s like my ears have to work three times more to identify what is being said. It´s funny. I don´t regret all the time I have dedicated onto learning these languages, but I do agree that it is indeed, a routine one has to have and that it is also a lot about determination. Great video, I do relate to everything you mention on it.

What do you think of trying to watch media in the language you are maintaining/learning without the subtitles? Perhaps there is a certain proficiency level that one needs to be at for the immersion to be effective?
