Taylor, Taylor, Taylor....the most important thing you said in this video pertains to contributing to a Roth 401K because you plan to be in a higher tax bracket when you retire than you are now. This is SUCH an important lesson for everyone to pay attention to. I finally had this explained to me at age 45 or so, waaaaaay too late in life. I had already spent 25 years putting away pre-tax money into my retirement. Now, when we take a look at what our revenue streams will be in retirement, turns out we will be in a much higher tax bracket than we are now. It's not too late, folks....contribute to a Roth account when you are young!!!!!

@@TaylorBellIf you do start your own financial channel a whole video on how to obtain health insurance ( health insurance options) for the self employed (or under employed) would be highly beneficial to people just starting out/graduating from college or highschool. Including a section on supplemental insurance to pay the bills if illness or injury. Sorry I know, all very boring 🥱. But you organize information in a very straightforward and useful manner.

HSA's are my favorite account so I'm glad you mentioned them. Most people don't realize you can invest your HSA money. Also, at age 65 you can take money out of an HSA for non-medical expenses without the 20% penalty. You would pay taxes on it though for non-medical expenses. So it essentially can be used as an HSA or a traditional retirement account after age 65. The contribution limit for SEP-IRAs is technically 25% but since you are taking a deduction on the contributions, that reduces your taxable income which in turn reduces the 25% amount that you can contribute. So the limit usually falls somewhere between 20-25% but is usually a little lower than 25%. Hopefully later this year firms will start offering Roth SEP-IRAs. Those are allowed now after the SECURE 2.0 bill was passed. Some good strategies to consider in the future for brokerage accounts are tax loss harvesting & donating appreciated shares to reduce your capital gains taxes down the road. Great video though! Seems like you are setting yourself up great for the future.

Expense ratios aren't the only consider for ETFs vs mutual funds. ETFs tend to be far more tax efficient given their structure and how they don't have to pay out capital gains. Beyond the tax efficiency, I think too many people chase the lowest expense ratio while leaving some gains on the table. It is very important to look at everything on a tax and fee adjusted basis

The ETF I would recommend over VOO or SWPPX is VT(not to be confused with VTI), because you'd have more fully diversified total market exposure. The opportunity cost loss of only sticking to the S&P500 outweighs the slightly higher 0.07% MER of VT because you're missing out on some mid cap and small cap as well as international and emerging markets.

Thank you very, very much for the great video! Since watching Taylor Bell, I have taken more of an interest in financing, banking, and other things concerning money! Also, I have mentioned so many that part of me is so deeply in love/head over in love with Taylor Bell this is because I have fallen deeply in love with New York! The reason is that I am accountable to some very powerful/influential people and I had to do something to get over my PAST hatred of American culture. I noticed Taylor Bell's channel-she is very different, very intelligent, friendly, and approachable. Even though a lot of people are very different from who they are in real, its her transparency/sincerity! For some strange reason, I am also videos on US immigration! Thank you very much, Taylor Bell! You are absolutely fantastic and brilliant! Keep up the perfect work!

Save enough in employer sponsored plan to get the match 4.) Pay off high-interest debt 5.) Fully Fund your emergency fund (3-6 months expenses) and any savings for expenses within the next 5 years 6.) Save enough to Hit the IRA contribution limit (Roth or Traditional depending on timeline) 7.) Maximize HSA contributions (if you have a high-deductible plan and qualify) 8.) Invest more into employer sponsored plan (or self-employed plan) until you hit the limits 9.) Invest into an investment account (taxable brokerage) skip to this step after step 6 or 7 depending on how much you need for the expense 10.) Pay off low interest debt 11.) Become a rich self-employed KZbinr (skip to this step right away when possible) Thanks for another great video Taylor! :)

Taylor, great video and congrats on making the jump to full-time self employment! I would just add a few thoughts about tax strategy based on your income: As a $300K/yr earner and single filer, you're currently in the 35% bracket. I know you said you expect your taxes to be higher in retirement, but I would suggest you carefully evaluate that hypothesis: Are you likely to have a house with no mortgage by retirement? That dramatically reduces your fixed expenses. Are you possibly going to be married? The joint-filer brackets are much higher than those of a single filer. Plus, even if rates remain constant or slightly increase, the brackets will be adjusted for inflation and increase, thereby lowering your effective tax rate (the important number) by the time you retire. Plus, if you're drawing 100% of your income from investment accounts, you can control your cash flows to manage your tax liability. In short, this is why you may likely have a lower effective tax rate in retirement even while enjoying a more luxurious standard of living. Something to keep in mind. With that in mind, let's just game a quick hypothetical: You're in the 35% bracket right now. Let's say the TCJA brackets expire as they are currently slated to do in 2026 and you're in the 25% bracket in retirement. This means you're saving 10% of every dollar you earn today by contributing tax-deferred instead of after-tax dollars. An Individual 401k at Schwab (or Fidelity, etc), has a $69,000 contribution limit like your SEP IRA, but unlike the SEP IRA the Individual 401k isn't subject to the IRS's pro rata rule. So you could contribute pre-tax dollars to the Individual 401k to lower your current tax burden, continue to do the backdoor Roth IRA contributions to lower your future tax burden, and then in your early years of retirement do a Roth conversion ladder to convert the pre-tax dollars to Roth dollars at the 10-15% brackets. Using tax-deferred accounts to shift the timing of your tax liability in this way would help minimize your lifetime tax liability. Roth accounts are fantastic investment vehicles, but for high earners the tax-deferred accounts are powerful tools to manage and reduce your tax liability. Best of luck to you!

Learned about estimated taxes the hard way this year lol. I still work as a full time Software Engineer but also have a media business (as a sole proprietor) and I am also a subcontractor with the Department of Defense. I have my normal work under my W2 ofcourse, but everything else was filed under a Schedule C. I was asked while filing how much I contributed in estimated taxes and was incredibly blind-sided lol. At least now I know, and can plan accordingly for this year haha.

I think a good way to keep your liquid assets is to put it into high yield savings account (HYSA) where you can earn APYs up to 5% (most tend to be around 4%) and it stays accessible. It does take about 2 days to come back to checking when you transfer but still better than it sitting in your checking.

I look at a lot of tax returns for my job (credit analyst - works on CRE loans) and I'm curious, when you file do you report your income in Schedule C, have a separate entity that files its own TR and then bring that into your personal on Sch E p2, or do some other method? Hope you enjoyed your trip to Europe!

Suggest selling SPY covered calls on your SPY etfs.. you can earn additional premium even when the market doesn't go up...

100% should be in voo vs the index fund option if you are in a brokerage. In a roth or IRA then expense amount will matter but in the case of traditional brokerage accounts ETFs are the way to go because you won't have capital gains on the etf like you will in an index fund when they swap positions/rebalance.

@@TaylorBell SPLG is State Street's new S&P 500 ETF and it has an expense ratio of 0.02%. ETF's can be better in Brokerage accounts because you are able to control when you realize capital gains like Michael stated. State Street is the company that also runs SPY. The 0.01% difference between VOO and SPLG is pretty minimal and it probably makes more sense to stick with one of them instead of switching back and forth because every time you buy/sell an ETF you are paying a small fee between the bid/ask price. 👍

Totally correct. The only reason to go mutual fund in a taxable account if it's not following an index, you trust the managers AND you want to contribute a massive amount of money to it (like if you're rich, basically).

Hi Taylor, any cash position I have in my Schwab account I keep it in SWVXX. It's a Schwab money market fund that currently pays a 5.12% yield. I put my cash deposits in that money market fund first, then if there are any individual stocks or ETF I want to buy, I simply sell off enough of the SWVXX to make the purchase. Maybe you do this already but thought I would make a mention. Keep up the good work!

As I've had a family I've put aside for retirement what my employer will match and then the rest is on childcare obviously but also aside from a ringfenced savings account for emergencies I use the money for experiences and holidays with my kids. A healthy future is not a given, especially as UK retirement age will be 67/68 for me. I'd rather have my holidays now (Also plan to be mortgage free for the end of my working life and use that money to save a cushion for retirement if I'm luckly enough to be reaching it).

Quick question Taylor! Are your investment accounts (i.e. brokerage) different than your 401k or Roth? Because technically the retirement accounts can also be invested, per se. Amazing breakdown!

Backdoor Roth IRA doesn’t mix well with sep IRA (see pro-rata rule). You just need to set-up an individual 401k.
