Yet, as the previous comment said, they already planned the ending, but as time progressed and, with it, the characters as well, the ending as it was planned made less sense. One of the earliest foreshadowing moments for me is the episode where Lily and Marshall run a competition to see who will be Marvin's godparents. One of the questions they ask is how will the godparent tell Marvin about lily and Marshall's death. Ted says that he will use professor infosaurus, a dinosaur hand puppet, which will be a big hit with kids. The scene then cuts to "present day" where professor infosaurus pops up saying "isn't that right kids." For me, that's basically saying Ted used the professor to tell the kids about Tracy dying.

You missed _one_ clue, a very subtle one. Well, it's a clue towards a clue, actually. The episode in which Tracy says "what mother wouldn't be at her daughter's wedding?" is named Vesuvius. Earlier in the season, Ted randomly says "Vesuvius". It is passed as a joke, but it was actually a way for the author to say "focus on the Vesuvius episode, it's the most important one". It is subtle, but it is there. That's how I knew the events of Vesuvius were important. Also, Vesuvius is a volcano, that by itself implies that there's something huge in that episode. It implies that something will shake the story, as a volcano.

No it doesn't. Think about why they broke up. Ted wanted kids, Robin wanted to put her career first. This happened right at the beginning of the show, and the middle of the show shows them both trying to pursue their 'primary' goals. They both got what they wanted most, and they came back to each other when they were ready for it.
@eIIie_stole_your_toast4 жыл бұрын
I disagree. The whole point of the story (show) is to tell us about Robin so that we (and his kids) can love her the way he does. It's a tough pill to swallow because of the title of the show but going all the way back to episode one it was all about robin. He very deliberately told the story from the moment he met robin because that's the story were supposed to understand. I think one of the things the show does really well is that it doesn't shy away from the real moments and in reality things are messy. His relationship with robin was messy. As a viewer it's easy to see that and roll your eyes when they wound up together. But it makes perfect sense to me.

More foreshadowing I found: - The fact that Max, Tracy's first love, died. Since Ted and Tracy are like soulmates they share a similar fate with this. - S09E19: Tracy says to Ted: "Your the love of my life but I just worry about you. I don't want you to be the guy who lives in his stories. Life only moves forward." As you've mentioned in your video, Tracy knows she is dying at that time and she tells Ted to move on after that. Also the song at the end of that episode "She might think I've forgotten her" - S09E21: On their first date, Ted suddenly stops. Tracy asks what he is doing, Ted looks kinda sad and says: "Remembering this"

The whole show it was like "oh we're so different with different goals we'd never work" and then they gave them everything they both wanted just to end up together after all was said and done. @Dante02d124 жыл бұрын
I read a lot of people claim that the story kept "proving" that Ted and Robin would never work together. They're so wrong. First, Ted and Robin were obviously the main couple of the series. They were Rachel and Ross (literally, they're a rip-off of those characters). Then, they kept falling in love with each other despite their issues. And more importantly, they made that deal that if they wound up alone in their 40s, they would marry each other. That was the main clue that they would wind up together when they would be old. Finally, characters, as persons, evolve. Things didn't work out when they were young because they had different goals. But Robin became more invested in her emotional life, and Ted got the kids Robin didn't want. So the story actually leads to Ted and Robin being together. It makes sense, really. The problem wasn't the end of the story, it was the way it was told. Too much time spent on Robin and Barney, and too litte time spent on the Mother.

@memandi24 жыл бұрын
So many others: 1. In one episode in the earlier seasons, Ted & Lily & Marshall are at their college reunion & they're getting high & Ted laughs asking "where's my wife?" 2. In the same episode where they're discussing "What mother would miss her daughter's wedding?" Tracy also tells Ted that she's worried about him, that she doesn't want him to live in his stories, "life only moves forward". 3. And also in that episode, Ted says, talking about his move to Chicago & how the group reacted to the news: "In a moment like that, when what's really happening is too intense to deal with, sometimes it's best", to which Tracy says "To leave it unspoken and just enjoy each others company instead." and they look at each other & hold hands. 4. This one is slightly weaker, but still. When Ted gets left at the alter by Stela, he talks about what would have happened if he went & talked to Tony instead of Stella. And there's a 'simulation' of what his life would have been, and he's talking to his (now blonde) kids and Stella appears immediately in the scene, something that never happens in 9 full seasons with Tracy.

I think the ending would have been terrible if they hadn't found someone as perfect as Christine Milioti to play the mother. Some have said she was too good and made it difficult to accept the ending. I say her having that ability to make you love the character in such a short time really put the mother on equal footing with Robin. It made me feel like she wasn't just some plot device to pop out some kids for Ted so Robin didn't have to, and then go away. Tracy being so 3 dimensional made me feel like she and Ted had a real life together and deep love. They didn't get much time together, but we're never promised that. Later on, it ended up that the timing was finally right for Ted and Robin. Ted had never stopped loving her, but that didn't mean he loved the mother any less. It's just that life only moves forward, as Tracy herself said. And often we fall in love with more than one person over the course of it.

I love this show but i hate the ending. Here's what I think shouldve happened. Robin and Barney should've stayed married not just because the entire season 9 would be a waste but because to show how they've matured and really did love each other compared to their relationship before. Maybe even adopt a few kids or smt. Ted in the end shouldve just given his kids a hug and cried a little or smt but never got remarried or went after another woman. It would make the best bittersweet ending in my opnion.

To be honest I hated the ending. The last couple seasons they really made Robin into this pyschopath who kept switching and playing her partners. It was also really unfair to Ted to have the girl he was waiting for so long pass away. I think they did that because there was still a group wanting Ted and Robin to end up together and they decided to take the middle way. The whole series was great but the ending was a total bummer to me

@darkwyve5 жыл бұрын
Plus in the flash forwards he always refers to her in past tense, not current tense like he does the others. Some say we don't see her (like Andy H. below) to not spoil who it is, but they could have easily show her from the back, or at an angle where you can't see the face, but they never do. There are so many (perhaps subtle then), but glaringly obvious hints that the mother has passed on by the time Ted is telling the story to his kids.

The "I don't want you to be the guy who lives in stories" scene makes me cry for like 20 minutes the first time I saw it. Probably because the whole show is based on Ted telling past stories. But with that being said. It was kind of stupid to have all this happen with Ted and Robin and finally trek everyone its not her. Then go and kill the real Mother and have him end up with Robin anyways. They should've ended it right after he says, "Kids, and that is how I met your mother." Not have the story end just to have the kids telling Ted to call Robin. Hearing Bob Saget as Old Ted, but sunny the task Old Ted threw me off the ending also.

@nachiketpargaonkar86466 жыл бұрын
Shana Louisa Try looking at it from Ted's perspective. The love of his life died 6 years ago. He has to move on now, even Tracy wanted that for him. He always felt for Robin. Explaining this to his kids in direct words was difficult, so he tells this story to them, only with a facade as to how he met their mother, when the intention of his story always was he wants to get together with Robin. That's why the story begins with Robin & the show ends with him & Robin being together. Even Tracy had moved on from her "the one" after he'd died. The ending of the show was quite deep! & Robin & Barney were never suited together. They were only perfect as friends, not as a couple. They failed before & they failed now, because both were too independent & Barney still kept secrets from Robin, even on the day of their wedding (when they had to delete the text from Lily's phone)

@silkyslleep64275 жыл бұрын
The biggest indicator that she was going to die was how little prominence she had in the actual story. The entire show is just a bunch of stories compiled into one with the theme being Ted's life before he met Tracy. The story of meeting the mom is almost the last one told, It is a short-lived story, just like Tracy's life and the time they spent together. It's a symbolic parallel. The title of the show is a misdirect, it shouldn't be called "How I Met Your Mother", that isn't the main theme of the story, it should be called: "My Life Before Your Mother". Or in other words: "My life *Without* Your Mother". This shows how Ted had life and happiness before he met Tracy, and he has to find that again without her.

Actually, I always had the feeling that he told this entire story to explain his kids why he is still in love with Robin. That he truly loved their mother and always will, but if Robin and Ted had the same future plans (he wanted kids, she wanted career), they would probably have stayed together. They didn't break up because they stopped loving each other. They broke up because both wanted different things in their lives. So, that's why Ted told this entire story.

I actually HATE lovestories. I think they‘re sometimes too perfect, too cringy or just boring at all. But THIS ONE, this one was incredible. I‘ve never seen myself sitting before the screen watching Netflix, while holding my hands on my heart, every time Tracy‘s on screen. This character did something NEW and UNNATURAL to me, why tf did they just waste literally EVERYTHING they‘ve built in these 9 seasons by killing the character that became one of my favorites after 3 seconds of screentime. I didn’t even find her that attractive, but I could already tell her personality matches Ted‘s perfectly. So why kill her off instead of making like 2/3 seasons more with her & Ted (marriage, kids), Marshall and Lily (Italy, kids) and Barney and Robin (NOT FUCKING DIVORCED, maybe adoption) That text’s long af lol

I agree the final it's hurtful, but exactly this disturbing detail makes the final of this series so memorable. Like Titanic, The Notebook and other classics...

I agree with you but what in the world were they going to show in those 2/3 seasons lol

No Barney got what he always wanted and that was a child. Robin finally realizing that she should've been with Ted. And Ted ending up with Robin is the complete arch. Show was never about Tracy even though it's in the title. It's about how Ted and Robin end up together.

@@AnuragSingh-bm9oq Tracy was the love of Ted's life, his soul mate, if Ted had to choose he would always choose Tracy first and then Robin. It is explained in the talk with Klaus, your thinking is related to a period after Tracy's death, if Tracy had been alive Ted would never have thought of Robin

Ted should’ve never gone after Robin I mean hear the own show “Lebenslangedschicksalsschatz is not something that develops over time, it’s something that occurs instantaneously..” At first only Ted was attracted to Robin and it took time for her to feel the same way. When Ted and Tracy met it was an instant connection. He should’ve realized that and never gone after Robin.

This would only be true if Tracy was still alive. The leiberwhatever makes her the best thing for him. But she's gone. Robin is the next best thing and he is the best thing for her

That and...Ted and Robin did had instant connection. She wanted the dick right in their first date. It was only postnoted because Teddy Westside let the forbidden words slip. Even after that, she still gave him the move to kiss her but he didn`t saw it. Robin was the best next thing in the universe right after Tracy. Tracy was the fantasy perfect girl and Robin was the perfectly unperfect girl. They are, in total, the only two women Ted was said to love right away and mean it and subquently the only two women he would ever love for most/all his life.

@@MisterWhat As Daniel Sloss, the Scottish comedian, puts it... There are 7.6 billion people in the world. To assume that there is only one "Lebenslangedschicksalsschatz" in the world for you is rather naive and narcissistic.

I think that the ending made perfect sense and I called it a full year before the finale aired. It's not exactly difficult to infer if you think rationally and understand narrative structure. Ted is telling his kids about the story of how he met his mother, but why only Ted? Why when they're teens? Further, the first episode of the series introduces Ted to Robin, who's clearly the focal point of where his story begins. Why would it begin with him meeting her? Why not when he met Marshall in college? Or Barney? And why did he want his kids to know so much about Robin, and his relationship with her, if he was married to Tracy? Why wouldn't the kids ever yell for her to give them her version of the story? Why wouldn't they call their dad out on being fixated on a past flame that's still a major part of their lives? And why would he narrate the story with such melancholy in his voice? Putting all these pieces together, the only logical conclusion one can draw is that their mother is dead and Ted is telling them this story as a way of getting their permission to finally move on, and with Robin, and exactly why he feels that way. Personally, I think the story is beautiful. Tragic, sure, and the final season could have been executed better. But the overall narrative of love and loss and yet not giving up on the power to love again is beautiful.

Also, if you think about it even more, he tried to tell the entire story without tearing up in front of his children. It took him, what, 5 years to tell his kids that without breaking down? I think he was trying to figure out if he was ready to move on after their mom.

@@kyla2395 Great point. He wasn't just sharing the story of him and Robin in context for his kid's sake, he was also retelling the story to himself and processing his feelings as he went. Remarkable story telling. It's true that both the last season as a whole and the finale had issues with too much filler and sometimes, poor execution in areas. But the story itself is touching, heartbreaking and profound.
