Acrylic Pour Painting Fluid Art Abstract Art How I Mix My Paint Tutorial With Straight Pour Dirty Cup
Hello Friends!
Several viewers have been asking how I mix my paint, so today we will do an in depth explanation of how and what I use and why.
I have a few different brands of paint: Liquitex Basics, Artists Loft, DecoArt and a Folk Art Treasure Gold.
Colors
Liquitex Basics
Dioxizine Purple
Artist's Loft
Ultramarine Blue
DecoArt Americana Decor
Metallics
24K Gold
Satin Enamels
Pure White with some
Artist's Loft
Flow Acrylic White
Folk Art
Treasure Gold Series
Antique Copper
Pouring Medium
Liquitex Gloss
Medium & Varnish
Paint + a bit of Water
Floetrol
THERE IS NO SILICONE IN ANY OF MY PAINT
I mix the paint with Liquitex Gloss Medium & Varnish and Floetrol.
After everything is mixed up, I use those paints in a Dirty Cup Straight Pour..

Hey there Mina. So I’ve been trying to find the liquitex gloss and varnish and can only seem to find one or the other. Where do you get yours or are you using something else? Thank you so kindly in advance 😁🦋

Hi Angie! The product 'Liquitex Gloss Medium & Varnish' has been renamed to now be 'Liquitex Gloss Medium'. They removed the word Varnish because they don't want it used as a Varnish. The label is also a bright green sticker now.. It still has the varnish in it, and dries with a beautiful luster and sheen. (If you want just a Varnish, use Liquitex High Gloss Varnish). I don't add anything but paint and Floetrol. I hope this clarifies things. (Don't pay more for the old sticker, its the same stuff in the bottle with a 'new' name.) Here is a link for it on Amazon. www.amazon.com/dp/B092MLY228/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_61FXDTHG8R2A0EFVBRZH?psc=1

@@MinaVillegasArt oh thank you so so much Mina, I knew there was a reason I couldn’t find it lol 😝! Totally makes sense as to why they changed the name. I was only looking for it to try your recipe, I like to use resin to finish my paintings. I did get a bottle of the gloss varnish so I may try it, just to see. I like the consistency that you get with the gloss medium but that can get spendy. I’ll have to see if I can get a good consistency with just floetrol and paint. Thank you for the link, very helpful. Happy pouring my friend 🦋🤗

Youre very welcome Angie! It's definitely more economical if you buy it by the gallon. I decant it into two half gallon bottles so it's easier to use.. you don't need much, a gallon even lasts me a good while!

@@MinaVillegasArt Hi, MIna! I'm binging on your paintings recently. You never mention a protective coat of varnish or other topcoat. Is that because the pouring medium + varnish is protection enough? I'm looking for any way to simplify the process! Thanks and virtual hugs from Philadelphia.

I'm so glad you addressed the plastic cup issue. I'm so sick of people trying to shame artists for using plastic vs paper without educating themselves of the reasons that paper isn't always more environmentally better. I have a septic system so as you've stated washing isn't good for it. People don't take into account all the negatives of paper products from cutting down trees. Sure paper breaks down faster than plastic but cutting down our trees causes more problems and I could list them but it would be way too long. It's all about trying to make your choices as environmentally conscious as can be and you've listed all the ways you have thought out all the effects your choice has created. Paper isn't always the best choice. I wish people would Google how cutting down our rainforests (to make these paper products they push) adversely effect our planet, from gas emissions, to loss of habitat for so many of our animals and insects. They don't take into account that loss of trees increases droughts. I could go on, but I just wish they'd Google and educate themselves on the issue before trying to shame others. Sorry, I just get so frustrated when I see or hear of the shaming going on. Kudoos to you for addressing the issue.

Thanks Mina for taking the time to show us how you mix your paints. I had been wondering what the benefits were of using both the floetrol and the pouring medium together and you explained that beautifully and in a simple way to understand. I’ve recently just been using floetrol with my paints but I’m a little excited now to try the pouring medium in the mix as well to see what different results I may achieve. The main thing I struggle with are colour combinations and contrasts but that’s just a learning process I know. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and for your gorgeous laugh...it always makes me chuckle!! Take care and keep safe.

Hi Mina loved the straight pour.. thank you so much for such clear detailed video on mixing paints.. this helps so much..specially us beginners. I have few questions 1) how much paint mix do I make to pour on a particular sized canvas? Does the volume poured on canvas change with different techniques - tree ring/ straight pour/flip cup? 2) you mentioned while mixing paints in measuring cup that you want 24k gold to sink in. Why would you want to sink certain colors? 3) what happens if my flow extender becomes thinner then expected? Thicken it to right consistency or use it just like that? Should my flow extender color sink while mixing and checking with stick or leave a little mount 4) why do we sink the colors in middle in measuring cup for straight pour and not layer like in tree ring pour Sorry for my silly questions.. I am very new to doing and learning art. Thank you so much in advance for all your help and right guidance. Stay healthy and safe

Mina, I don't comment much but I enjoyed your tutorial. Surprised to see a smaller canvas instead of a ginormous one. Although 16x20 is big for me. I'm a 12x12 type of pour person. The golden cells next to the center looked yellow to me but I know you didn't have yellow. I saw a marlin fish just over to the left of the golden strands on the right. And I saw a pelican with the triangle eye. Lol.. you did really great. Thank you so much. Learned a lot. Be safe. We don't have sun either in NE Tennessee. Just clouds and rain. I’ve gotten 3 dozen ready made Pourage Posse paints in the last few months (by Christina Welch) excellent break on my sore hands, but learned something. Her paints held shapes perfectly in dips, tho idk all the ingredients, she told me to add my Liquitex PM & PVA, then paint(I never put paint directly in the cup-thanks to Mina long ago) & Floetral. Thank u Mina! Love learning something watching my favorite artists! I can’t watch a Mina-HoA vid without a huge smile on my face! Such a bright spot in these stressful times!

Mina Villegas Art I know, I’ve only ever added PVA to thicken up thin paints, esp Golden’s fluids, but Christina was kind enough to tell me how she mixes her paints(there’s something else in them for shipping but doesn’t effect consistency). I’m practicing for an 18x24, bidirectional/ribbon pour with greens, teals, blues, & purples (17 colors), overlapping colors & don’t want mixing. My practice piece held all the colors.

Mina, thank you so much for this tutorial. You answered my questions regarding the addition of the gloss medium and varnish. I always wondered why your paints show the bling when mine don't. I have been using only the Floetrol. Thanks for all the help.

Thank you for your explanations & guidance. I learned a lot. I must admit I preferred the original image before adding all the white. I could see a planet in the center with stars and nebula et all around it. Then all the beautiful copper purple disappeared. *sad face* You are a wonderful inspiration. Thank you again.
