How I moor my narrowboat as a solo boater

For this video I thought I'd respond to a question that someone asked me after watching one of my previous videos. It's all about how I moor my narrowboat, which is a bit more difficult when you're on your own.
By the way, I think I pronounce "pilings" wrong in this video. I've only ever seen the word written down so I don't know how to pronounce it.
Anyway, I hope people find this video useful!

If you cleat the mooring line 3 times (figures of 8) there is no need for knots. Quicker to release/ adjust if necessary. Spring lines fore and aft will keep the boat in position and close to the bank. From a tidal sailor . Nice clear and relaxed video.

Just to get technical for a minute... On top of the fact that I really enjoy the boating content of your videos, and I know nothing about narrow-boating, your video production and editing is also very good. I did live sound production for nearly 25 years, and while many others on this platform go from blasting my ears with an extremely boring 'hammering nails in the garden shed music (??) overlay, to being almost inaudible when they speak to the camera, you've got the sound balance just right, so well done for that too. I know that's not easy. Stay safe out there Betty, and happy cruising.

When you step off the stern with the centre line, take a pin and hammer, and tie the centreline down. Saves you from running back and forth pulling the boat back in...😊. Off course, after you have secured the bow and stern lines, you untie and retrieve the centre line and mooring pin. Never moor a boat with the centre line.... As Crissecorr mentioned elsewhere, you should use a simple 'figure of eight' to secure the mooring line. You should really never tie knots in lines, in case they either need to be released fast, or ths knot gets to tight to undo (ever tried to untie a frozen knot?😂). Bringing the line back to the boat is absolutly the best practice, and to finish it off, a simple figure of eight on a cleat (like the bow), or two half turns on a post, finished with the rest of the line neatly coiled next to it.

I enjoyed sharing your life on your boat, Something that I can't do now I am living in Canada. Half the fun is learning how to do new things. Great to see you using a long centre line, so many people get into trouble jumping off with a bow or stern line. I did cringe when I saw you tying the mooring line with so many knots. Never tie knots in a mooring line! you never know when you may want to release it quickly. Simply one wrap round the cleat and cross over and back over to form an X turning the last loop over. This shows other boaters that you are a real boater!

Brilliant video, no doubt you will get lots of advice from people who have and have not ever done this. One thing I used to do in locks was just take the rope round the bollard once, and then lay the rope stretched towards which gates I was working. The idea being if I needed to pull on it I could, or if I needed to loosen it at least the end of the rope was by me and I got good at flicking it to remove pressure ( this was on a grp wide river locks btw nothing as fancy as a narrowboat ) . You can grab a cheap long handled paint roller, throw the roller part and turn the rest into a hook so you can grab the loop of your chains from below the pilings. Useful when the nettles start to come out and long wet grass. I like your attitude, no rush and move in the dry when possible. Remember you do not have to move your boat in severe weather ( not just ice ) so in weather warnings consider if it is safer to email CRT for an overstay as a single boater.
@bettyonaboat
@bettyonaboat 4 ай бұрын
Ah yes, the perils of nettles! I've been known to get my scissors out and start snipping them! I also accidentally disturbed a wasps' nest last year and got stung lots of times, so a hook would definitely have been useful then!

Hi Betty, I'm so glad KZbin brought me here as I've really enjoyed catching up on your Vlogs so far - hopefully you'll continue this as I found it rather relaxing to watch after stressful days at work. I'm an ex-narrowboater from your part of the world and it's been too long since I last cruised the cut I really miss the calm and relaxing way to travel. Nice that you share your journey as a novice owner - I'm sure many would be too nervous at the beginning ;) There's something about the cut and the slower pace of life that I also found so magical back when I enjoyed time on our 45ft ex-hire boat which I spent a long time converting so that my disabled dad could get to use it despite mobility issues, but that's the magic of having such a narrow cabin! I embraced the lifestyle taking it to Netherton on one of the IWA rallies that attracted hundreds of boats! That was an adventure just getting there from the base mooring near Daventry via Brum too! I learnt a lot the hard way but being an engineer of all sorts of transport in my life I just adapted skills to suit the boats needs. If you do as much work as you can yourself, you'll have so much more confidence as your journey continues. Happy cruising, and enjoy life as much as you can on our beautiful inland waterways! Pete

Hi Betty! Good to see you still boating! I love the name of your boat "Little One" - Just to echo another comment; there is something wonderfully naive and sweet about you and your videos. @@kevinsaunby982 oh I understand now 🤦‍♂️, we have the same on some canals & riverbanks here in Scotland, we call them piles, it’s the pile driver remark that sunk in (pardon the pun), I remember the old pile drivers that was basically a big crane hoisted a massive metal weight up & dropped it at freefall to knock them in it took forever, nowadays they have big hydraulic machines that rattle them in a lot faster, both make a terrible racket though 😂

Hi Betty. You explain things really well. I tie my mooring rope on my T piece the same as you. I also have a second centre line with a nappy pin attached so when i moor up i just drop the nappy pin in the piling so it stops the boat drifting out and keeps it to the side while i tie up the front and back. Its handy when your doing locks too. Maybe it would make your life easy specially on busy days when boat are coming past 😉

I hope a helpful suggestion for when you first go ashore with the centre line: 08.00 on - take a chain with you and make that your first, if only temporary, tie-up of the rope back on itself, by the middle of the boat. Gives you full control of the boat throughout, avoiding it floating away and you having to dash back to catch it! Then you can do the stern and bow chains confident of the boat's stable position. Hope it works for you.
