The best advice I can give to avoid over-prepping is to not focus on the solutions but rather the obstacles. There's no way to predict what your players come up with. Also, if you'd prefer to avoid too much improv, really flesh out your setting. If you have a clear understanding of how your town, travel route or cave system works you can go along with almost anything the players throw at you

Good advice and very spot on. If the foundation and framework is in place it’s almost easy to be a good DM. Almost. 😃

The biggest temptation for all new DM's it seems is over-prepping, even tho the advice in the books has always been start small and build as needed. But it's the hardest to follow, especially when you've got ideas coming out everywhere.

I prepare with a notebook using one or two pages with bullet points and bad guy stats . I always have trouble with NPC names, hence there are a lot of Bobs in my world. Some of the best sessions are improv.
@xinth232 ай бұрын
Yes, a trusty notebook is essential for me too. NPC names during improv can be fun because I pick the first name that pops into my head. And Bob is a great NPC name.

The most difficult part of being the referee for decades... (I'm behind you, I'm at 40 years playing and reading obsessively, LOL (I speak, nay, more over write the language of High Gygaxian). Veteran players. Despite my youthful start, these players had decades as well - and weren't my childhood friends. I always think, "Completely ready for these guys... c'mon try and derail this... It's too open... it's too..." Oh, you're second level and you want to start a crime syndicate using the power you frauded yourselves into. Um, yeah, I wrote about that... but those notes were intended for higher... FUCK IT, WE GO IN AND INFILTRATE IT ALL! The foibles of the first DM are the trials of the latter DM.
