I re-sound designed the Anti-Gravity Cube from Destiny The Finals, and I wanted to share my process:
1️⃣ Syncing Sound with Animation:
I started by setting precise locators in my session to understand the cube’s mechanics and ensure the sounds synced seamlessly with the animation.
2️⃣ In-Hand Design:
For the cube's subtle movements in the player’s hand, I recorded electromagnetic interference sounds and enhanced them with audio-effects.
3️⃣ Throwing Mechanics:
When thrown, I added a dynamic pitch modulation to simulate the cube’s trajectory and bring its movement to life.
4️⃣ Activation & Release:
The anti-gravity activation sound is a blend of a sweep, kick, and synth designed in Kick 2 and Serum, while the release uses filtered & distorted explosion recordings shaped with Arturia’s EFX Refract plugins for that reality-breaking impact.
5️⃣ Anti-Gravity Loop:
To sustain the cube’s unique energy field, I created a loop using Moog sub37, Serum, and granular synthesis in Phase Plant, crafting an evolving sound with SpinTracer to control depth and spatial movement.
6️⃣ Player Interaction:
When the player enters the anti-gravity field, I added a bass pitch shift indicator (that could be driven by the player’s Z vector via an RTPC) and layered in a smooth synth for interaction feedback.
