How I Roll Fretboard Edges

I've been asked a few times now how I go about rolling the edges of my fretboards. Here's a video on how I do it.

Great video. I'm going to try the socket next time. I bought that Kramer neck in 1984 had it put on my Pacer, and played the crap out of that guitar for the next 15 years. The neck fits me like a glove now. A few years about I started working on my own guitars. If I want that fits like a glove feel on my other guitars, I speed up the process with a worn out, gunked up (is that a word) file. Just make sure you one file in one direction.

Hey Ben, some good ideas,, I really love Rosewood, never big on Maple freeboard, I would think Maple would be more likely need rolled?? Keep bringing the tips, starting 2 feel like spring in Tennessee,,

You don’t. You use a fret file to file them down.

I'm looking at the Fender Strat Pro II necks with rolled edges. Pretty subtle compared to earlier models, but it's a nice feel. I will say the aftermarket 'boutique' neck makers seem to ignore the idea of rolled edges. It's kinda sad seeing amber nitro on beauty flame maple, finished frets ... but fretboard has sharp, cutting edges.

I see your point. However in my opinion rolled edges are totally un necessary unless if you’re extra sensitive about that. That said, if my neck came with rolled edges, it’s a nice touch. Like have high quality leather shoes with the extra shine but not necessary

@@RideAcrossTheRiver Yes. But for me, I have a Strat with rolled edges and another Strat with no rolled edges. I actually find that it doesn’t matter for me……But I majored in classical guitar where your hands have to be more flexible so the extra fancy rolled edges makes no difference to me.

I honestly never felt the need to roll the edges. I take care of cheese grater fret sprout with a jewelers file. When needed that HAS to be done!

Sorry, but I'm not buying this. Just seems too easy. And what about the frets? If you roll only the edges between frets, you're get sharp protruding fret edges.

You’re not removing enough material where the frets become an issue. If you do find a sharp fret edge that can easily be fixed with a fret file. It is this easy.

You're actually compressing material (in the case of a socket or a screwdriver works well also) somewhat and you never get to the point where the fret is not seated, with this technique it's never really rounded that close to the frets. With the razor blade you can go too far, and you remove more than you compress the wood
