How I set up my FILTRATION with the OASE BIOMASTER and SEACHEM MEDIA

I hope you're keeping well, brother. A suggestion for the air issues experienced by users of the Biomaster filters - try swapping the pre-filter foams for the coarser version as the finer foams hold onto a nation of air after cleaning. Many people think the air is being generated inside the filter or being sucked in somehow from the tank but I strongly suspect that it is from the pre-filter foams as the phenomena is common with foam-only filters of all types. Most plastic generates a static charge and foams are no different - if you put certain foams under water then get a close up of them they will be packed with micro bubbles which don't release until days later. I should really make a video to show that as it will help people with these filters.

Nice setup Geordie,the only thing I would probably change for me is use a medium and fine sponge in the bottom tray!...I realize there's the prefilter but I like a little more mechanical in my filters👍

I clean the pre filter sponges every week with tap water (real easy to do). The main canister media/mayrix I clean around every 4 months by simply giving them a quick rinse in water removed from the aquarium.

Never, I just rinse it occasionally in water removed from the aquarium.

Have you noticed a gradual decline in Nitrates. I'm using the same cannister with Fluval FX. After about 4 months it has taken a dip from 40 ppm to 20 ppm.

Hello brother. Need help? I installed an Oase 250 in my Axolotl tank (130 litres) and after 5 weeks of running, had an outbreak of Detritus worms? Rest assured Ammonia + Nitrite was 0. Nitrate minimal and PH 7.5. Did regular water changes, siphoned out uneaten food + waste in a timely manner and yet my tank was swarmed with Detritus worms. Although they're harmless they got into the feathery gills of my Axolotls causing much irritation and stress hence have dismantled the entire tank. Now based on my research Detritus worms manifest from poor hygiene and over feeding, but this was never in my case? Just to let you know i turned the dials on full power in both the inlet + outlet pipe. Im now reluctant to re-setup the Oase Biomaster 250 again due to fear of another Detritus worm outbreak! Please advise brother ❤

Hi, excellent video Do you know how much media (Matrix) is needed for 2 filter baskets? 500 ml is enough for two baskets?

No harm in 500ml but personally, I would split a litre between 2 and create as much surface area as possible for the beneficial bacteria to thrive. Glad you enjoyed the video, thank you👍

I read that in larger tanks, the inflow and outflow should be on opposite sides of the tank. Is this accurate?

I never do and it's seems quite regular practice with alot of planted aquarium hobbiests, to have them together. If a tank is really large I would add another filter with a set of in and outlets on opposite corners (in/out back left with another in/out front right) if this makes sense?

I am going to order the Seachem Matrix to put in my aquarium. Can I just change everything that is in there in one time and set it up like you did? Or do I do it in stages so there are always some bacteria in there?

If it'd established I would do it in stages, maybe half a tray at a time. When you do add Seachem Stabilty too. Help replenish the beneficial bacteria. Also a great product👍👍

Hi Theo, It's just my preferred way, does no harm to have filter in top sponge. I just prefer to have as much surface area for beneficial bacteria as possible. The Purigen just gives it that final polish and removes any harmful organics (if there's any) once the tank is fully established I tend not to use Purigen at that stage. Yeah mate, that's exactly it👍just my personal preference with the filter setup.

@@GEORDIESCAPER it makes sense mate as the pre filter is 45ppi and the other main blue sponges and orange sponge are 20 and 30 ppi, so are useless when positioned after the 45ppi prefilter. I'll be settling up my biomaster 600 like yours, mine is going on a 150 litre tank (10 times turnover). Are the 45ppi ok or would you go finer and use there 60ppi? And how much matrix would you put into the biomaster 600, I was thinking 2 litres ?

No harm in filter floss I just never feel the need to use it as long as I keep on top of weekly water changes and cleaning of pre filter sponges. I would probably use a 45ppi preflter with a heavily stocked tank or larger messy fish.

This is a 60l. 350 is my preferred size on a 60l aquarium. You will need an adapter to change from 17mm to 13mm. If you are only using sponges on the pre filter, are you rinsing them in tap water or tank water? Had heard people rinsing in Tao water, but think they had foams in the bottom tray? Thanks

Pre filters are fine to wash in tap water but if you decide to keep any sponges in the main filter housing, wash those in tank water. I generally use pre filter sponges only and fill the filter trays with Seachem Matrix, which do get rinsed in tank water when needed.

Why do you remove all the sponges? At this moment I use the Eheim 4+ professionel 350. I have a new aquqrium now and need to start it up. I consider to reuse the eheim but I like the oase bio 350. What would be your recommendation?

Hi there, I prefer to pack in as much bio media (Matrix) as possible. If the pre filter sponges are cleaned weekly I've never had any issues. That's the beauty of this filter, easy to access and clean pre filter sponges and built in heater if you get the Thermo version.

The sponges are enough. Filter media is way over sold. Another issue with putting loads of ceramic media etc in there is it gets really heavy.

Oase hose is 16/22mm right, is it ok if i put a hose reducer for 16/22mm to 12/16mm then use 13mm lily pipes? Will it effect the flow rate?

@bmjjj2410 This is exactly what I did. I've noticed when shopping for adapters that rarely use 13mm but the 12/16mm is the one to for to use a 13mm lily pipe. Because the flow area (hosing) is smaller,, flow rate/pressure is increased. Win win.

Use the blue locking lever on the in/outlet housing or you can adjust flow on the actual outlet connection part of the pipe (blue dial) if you're using the one it comes with.

Yeah that’s really strange. I have a biomaster thermo 350 and 600 also have a bioplus thermo 50 for my medicating tank. My 350 had a problem with the impeller and they sent me a new one within a week.
