great vid! very informative. I'll have to try it out next month...visiting family in Kailua...any recs on surf fishing spots near there? Any special techniques for Hawaiian waters? I've never fished in Hawaii before...but eager to fish new waters! My surf fishing experience is all mainland west coast and Gulf Coast.

You can vary parts of the info shown. Wired leads for sand/reef areas, pyramids for flat reefs, flats for sand/mud. Also to suspend the bait above the bottom you can make the baitline shorter (3-4in) so the crabs won't get it. I like my lead line to be 21/2 to 3ft, some like it shorter while others longer.

The bait bags i used i purchased off Ebay. Pro Med size#01 at 1/2in. The heavy dental floss you can get almost anywhere from CVS, Walmart, Target, etc. Circle hooks are the Japan Mutsu brand. The black 3-way swivels are 4/0 from Charley's Fishing Supply in Honolulu (or get them off Ebay as well).

Chris I noticed when you set up your trible swivel you don't put the hook in line with your main line. Is there a reason for this?
@ScubaChris7 жыл бұрын
The 3-way swivel? I always use both ends of the bigger main barrel swivel for the mainline to connect to 1 end & the other end is the lead line. You need this to cast far in a straight line. This leaves just the dangling end of the 2nd barrel swivel for your leader line.

Makes sense. Thanks for all the informative videos.

Do you use a shock leader or do you connect your mainline( braid ) straight to the swivel ?
@ScubaChris5 жыл бұрын
Hi Joshua, On the spinners i use here for shallow water bait casting my braid mainline goes directly to the 3-way swivel, from there i attach my leader & lead line. For my larger conventionals i use braid backing to a monofilament top shot.

Swivels online or if your on Oahu at Charley's Fishing Supply. Bags are standard for treating fingers (size01) at Medical Supply Houses.

This is my set-up for Chocolate Beach. Reason i make my bait leaders short is because i need to keep the bait off the bottom. This area has a lot of crabs, BIG crabs that'll eat the bait off. Longer bait leaders won't work here.

so now anything that you dont keep or gets away will die from eating the bag..
@ScubaChris8 жыл бұрын
If you thread the hook through the upper bag correctly i don't think that'll happen. I experimented for weeks before releasing this video. Smaller sized fish can only grab & run with the bag because the bag is to big for them to swallow (ie papio under 2lbs). All Bonefish from 12in up had the bag in the mouth. The courseness of the teeth held it there. The biggest fish brought in was a +6ft Hammerhead, bag was in the mouth. Doubt any fish that size could die from swallowing a small expandable bandaid.

IS IT BIODEGRADABLE???...WHAT ABOUT THE SEA TURTLES? WONT THEY EAT IT OR HARM ANY OTHER MARINE LIFE?
@ScubaChris7 жыл бұрын
Every angler along the ocean's shoreline runs the risks of accidental hook-ups with seals & turtles. For the past few months i started using barbless hooks since helping a Haw'n Monk Seal who was hooked (check my vids). I've never lost a bait bag yet. If you follow my instructions it's even hard to purposely remove the hook from one. Closest was having sharks ripping it up.
