It seems that the books we buy from Amazon we are only leasing. I like to get books from public domain sites, but side-loading to a recent version of Kindle is fraught with difficulties, I find. Sometimes, a book does transfer through Calibre; other times, it does not appear & I cannot access it--even though the file appears on my Kindle in its Documents folder.

Yes, everything seems to be going to a subscription model.

@@RickBolt I have since discovered that, if I use Calibre to convert .prc or .mobi bookson my PC to .azw3, they consistently transfer to my Kindle Scribe via USB cable & appear on the Home screen!

I have the original Kindle 1st edition and the Kindle DX (and even the 1st edition kindle fire) But since my favorite Kindle ... the DX lost its WhisperNet based on 3G cellular plans I had been looking for a replacement. I settled on the Onyx Boox Tab Ultra C Pro. It is android based, so you can load the Kindle reader and read your kindle books just fine. But at the same time.... I have become concerned with Amazon switching their terms of service to say that all the books I bought... were just licenses to access. This is an actual thing where companies are in essence, stealing your purchased items right off your devices.

I agree, many things are treated as a subscription these days.
