"I have no idea what I'm supposed to do anymore," yeah, social media really causes that. I'm trying to get away from looking at stats because they cause such severe depression, especially when failure means I don't have a job anymore.

Thanks, I have been feeling inept, incapable, etc. (when I was younger I did many things) I like what you said. I have to allow myself to make a mess and enjoy just fiddling with pencils and watercolours again. I know it won't look great, but experimenting used to recharge my batteries. I'm not an Artist, I'm just a Mom, but learning and doing things feeds my soul. My kids are artistic. It's like a compulsion with us, to draw, or cook, or create things.

You're right there's definitely a strong correlation between social media and a lack of desire to create/stifling of creativity. I end up creating way more art whenever I take extended breaks from my art socials. It all feels way too performance/numbers based and unnatural at times, I'm trying to get used to recording my process, but I hate it, it's awkward and boring af😭🤣

Oh yes and forgot to say -- I`m sick of and tired of all those "influencer artists" who to be honest (judging by the videos they produce) don`t really care about what they do and what they are..but care about "likes" and "followers" only. I love it so much that you talk about such tough and very complex topics.

Changing one's mindset before approaching the easel or drawing table can help a lot. I know it did for me. I was always wondering if the art I created would be good enough to post online, or good enough to get likes, or good enough to make a sale.... All it did was set up creative roadblocks and take away the joy of creating. Now I just create what I want, and if I'm happy with it, I'll post it. If not, I don't post it and move on to the next piece. I also don't expect or look for 'likes'. I mostly post as a visual art diary to keep track of my art progress. This has definitely increased my joy of creating. Thank you. I appreciate you not being 'normal', LOL.

I totally know what you mean! I'm a musician and actually when writing songs or studying a piece I actually prefer a "painful" or hard process. Whenever I notice that it's hard, I realise that the outcome will be good, so I suffer happily while creating xD

Can relate to the struggle of either enjoying the process, or hating it but enjoying the final image, and rarely enjoying both. So, great video, thank you. Though I get it is a chore, I really enjoy watching your painting video's, and to observe your process. So again, thank you, and keep it up ^^

As an artist, myself, there’s so much of myself, my mind, hand, energy, decision making, that goes into a painting. I use oils, btw. There is a huge part of me that is kind of being pushed into the work on a dynamic, intangible way which is on another level than the physical. I don’t feel this doing anything else in my life, and in the end, once the absolute final stroke is done, and I know the totality has been reached to put the brush down, the buzz from seeing what I created is a kind of awe, because not only did I do the painting but the intrinsic unnameable part of me did the work, and that is an awesome feeling whenever I look at it even years later. I have been an artist 35 years and do everything for myself, not specifically to sell or ever put on social media. There is freedom to be, in this!

What you're saying in this video finally explains something I've never understood about my 'art'. I generally don't know what I'm expecting before I start. I start, and figure it out along the way. I get stuff wrong, I adjust, and it happens. I don't set expectations about how long I work each session, I just try to advance each time, and enjoy the flow state, not having expectations! I even shifted from setting New Year Resolutions, and instead am recording achievements as the year goes on. On the social media side, I post my work, hightlights of life, and mostly try to support other creators! We all benefit when we lift each other up. :) THANK YOU!

Art is my ikigai , I love to make new things a lot but many times it doesn't go my way it's frustrating but whenever i remembers the time i spend with it makes it really worthwhile and at the end the thought always is to improve and learn more with my artist friends and seeing online artists. And after seeing this video it gave me another lesson about that I shouldn't get sad about my painting and shall not get shy about showing it to others.

I feel incredibly lucky, incredibly blessed. I am retired and everything I create can be just for me. So I understand that concept of whatever the next thing is, it is something I want to do. If my purple mountains make me think of adding a dragon, then, ‘yep, I’m putting one in.’ Much of my joy comes from doing what I want and knowing that if my breast cancer, the first or the second time, had killed me then I wouldn’t have been able to do all of this. I didn’t make time for my art before that. Now I spend hours in the studio and I absolutely love, positively love it and it turns out I’m actually pretty darn good. I love learning, and I very much appreciate your channel! Thank you for being such a dedicated teacher! I’m a new subscriber.

Videos likes this one are what made me subscribe to this channel in the first place. Besides being amazing with the brush, you seem to be a person who puts a lot of thought into "art" and "life". There's no such thing as "images in exchange of likes" in your public portfolio. I hope one day I can afford having one of your pieces in my collection. Much love. Keep spreading your passion.

The covered topic hit my heart directly since it`s very very common for me to feel myself in the way mentioned in the video. Damn glad to know that it`s totally fine and it`s ok for the majority of the artists to feel that way especially for the artists who are so experienced and professional

Is so frustrating to be so influenced & driven by social media attention. I used to create just for the pure enjoyment of creating. I remember having the desire to cover every blank surface with something unique & colorful but now I find myself constantly wondering if what I made will get so many views or so many likes. I wish I could just shut that part of my mind off. Now i have major performance & production anxiety to the point that I don't even pick up a sketchbook anymore 😢

I'm super happy, that I don't post my art online on a regular basis. Sometimes I think, a KZbin channel would be super fun, sometimes I miss the days posting about my art process in my instagram story (I felt no pressure there, I just was able to write about my fascination about art theory, about my art process etc.) But most of the time, I'm happy to draw and paint. Sometimes I think during the process that this painting will be very good and I could show it to a few people e.g. via discord. But I post only the best of my work and only when I'm feeling it in this moment. I only have two people in my life which see nearly all of my work and that's my mum and a friend. So I feel no pressure when I start painting and right now I'm happy that social media likes or views don't dictate what I draw or what I think I should draw. Maybe that changes in the future but right now I just draw for myself.

This video is wonderful, the creative process is really demanding and I didn't know why I wasn't enjoying my work for quite sometimes. I realised it happened because I was using only one method, what I learned from school that I wasn't happy with tbh. After trying different mediums and approaches, it totally changed everything. Thank you, because videos like this have been among the biggest helps.

Yes! Im a professional artist, mainly children’s book illustration. The best part… the commission (hey… I’m worth it! Mentality) and…. When it’s done! (I made a thing!). The rest is a struggle. Were it not for my creative obsession, I wouldn’t be able to do it. The one place I’ve found I enjoy and experience the overlap is public live illustration: graphic recording. … though there the bad bit is just before you start…..

Great video, ....as a painter I appreciate all the delicate dilemmas you brought up. That's a killer painting, especially all the black👍I choose not to be a realistic painter but I appreciate your talent. Everything you said is relevant to the creative process regardless of styles chosen. I love texture and so while building up the different layers, some really cool things happen and so i will document the process with a few clicks of the camera along the way. I find the process pics very interesting from the first splatters and the wash, to the end result. I think if i ever made a video i would want someone to be dealing with the camera for most of the time.🤑After painting for 2 years straight full time I made a lot of good art and stepped into so many dimensions of sheer ecstasy and pure frustration. I've proven to myself that I am a true artist and that I'm bad ass, unique, etc.... and i don't need anyone's ...what's the word? (loss of word). i don't need anyone's outside confirmation that I'm good or successful...even when I'm broke and out of paint. This makes me happy. I'm in a phase now where it all feels pointless in a positive way. It's a good time to take a break, catch a new perspective and reflect to get back on it refreshed and do larger work at some point. You are an inspiration, thanks.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I am at the point where I am starting to get commissions on a reasonably regular basis and also at a point where I am starting to feel I got into a niche - realistic motor-sport paintings, too soon, that I am not really enjoying either the process or results, that I want to go back to basics, learn more of the theory (I am self taught, mostly from KZbin videos), to improve my technique and explore other subjects and styles. So I am fighting with myself and my art a lot!

Thank you for this video! I love your thought process and you’re very relatable. I really needed to hear the sentiments you shared. I create and I’ve been attempting to turn it into a business. At the beginning it was even fun to share even though I absolutely dislike filming the process. Then I fell into the “pit of despair” and I’ve been trying to climb my way out. But, I think you’ve got it right. I think it accepting that sometimes the process just isn’t going to be fun. But, how do you keep going if it constantly becomes “unfun”? Do you find a way to trick yourself into loving it… until it’s simply routine?

If it were easy, everyone would do it. If you find what you’re working on easy, then probably everyone IS doing it. The qualities that make an artwork a high quality work, are ephemeral, and I suspect a strong correlation between the degree of effort exuded and the final output.

Some day I'll be able to enjoy the process. Until then I can only enjoy the outcome. Because I'm not professional. I am amateur at best. I can not enjoy the process when I can not let the subconscious mind take the steering wheel because I haven't done the leg work in order to get the techniques into my subconscious mind to begin with. Many people enjoy the process without knowing anything about proportions, color thereoy or basic material knowledge. And it shows. It always shows. Or in other words, I don't yet have the deserved ego to simply let it go. On that thought, the "best" advice always come from friends and family. They'd say "Ah, just don't stress your self, have some fun, you're already really good".

But you are getting a ton of advertisement through your KZbin channel and you’ve insisted that it be seen by many people in a very busy public place. And that you will only give it to that person with a whole lot of people can see it where is front and center so yeah you’re getting a lot out of it you’re not getting nothing out of this.
