I hate how ENDLESS social media is now. Tiktok literally never ends so there’s no signal for u to stop, and Instagram now shows you recommended posts, plus the endless explore page. Twitter goes on forever, KZbin goes on forever, it never stops. This is even harder when you’re someone like me who gets fomo and feels like they HAVE to keep up with social media to get all the jokes that my peers get to connect with them. It’s exhausting and I wish there was an app that ONLY showed me the people that I followed
@prosperenfantinylosgeograf27213 жыл бұрын
i can relate to that! and i guess u already know they do it on purpose, they're perfectly aware that that keeps you trapped. something that helps me is: on instagram or facebook, scrolling down the amount of posts i want to see (without "seeing them"/reading them), then reading them going "up" and stopping when i reach the top (and of course, not updating it). it's like an artificial way of creating a limit. for youtube, i use the remove youtube suggestions. i also have the fb news feed erradicator. i don't have any app on my phone (not insta, not fb, not even youtube) and i don't have a tiktok, i just watch compilations. i guess this is unsolicited advice ahaha but i leave it here if it helps someone!
@GeorgeThoughts3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Personally the only way I manage to stop scrolling is because I'm very FOMO so I heavily curate my feeds. I only follow accounts I absolutely can't live without and anything not bringing my joy gets culled. This means I don't follow many accounts or any accounts who post too much, so it's easy for me to "catch up" on my feed and see all the day's posts now

personally for me the worst part is just tik tok comments in specific. tik tok is a really harsh platform and i enjoy the content on there but the comments are almost always negative, and as i keep reading through them over and over again with the same negative energy the more i noticed how i'm becoming negative in my own life, without even noticing it. and thats my issue, i love tik tok and i love most of the content on there, but i cant watch a video without checking the comments, and once i check those comments everything feels negative again. update: cant believe i wrote this just a week ago, i’ve gotten myself to delete tik tok, and i feel a lot better honestly. the thing is, that so many of my friends are influenced by it rn it’s hard to even talk to them without some negative experience, i hope more people understand that platforms can be negative, and u need to look back on the content ur seeing sometimes, and focus on what’s best for u. good luck :)

I’m totally chill with not being on social media for months at a time. Sometimes it’s necessary to give yourself a break, because I very much doubt we were meant to be taking in that much stimulation at once. Like I will scroll throgh people commenting "you are so pretty" or "beautiful" on someones post and I will compare my posts to theres and see if I have more likes or comments. Its sooo toxic and one of my biggest regrets in getting Instagram. Im gonna delete it soon but Im going to wait until I get my new phone. Yeah, thats my Ted Talk

I had a really toxic time with social media When I was younger, especially on tik tok (which was musical.ly then). I got so much anxiety, and at the end it was so bad, that I just one night out of almost fright of seeing how my life had turned out, I uninstalled it. Now a few years later I have a much better relationship with social media. But it just shows how it can really ruin your life. Those two years of my life I was only like 12, 13, but I was in such a bad place that those years of my childhood was just almost completely ruined. Every laugh was fake, I didn't run around and played, and I almost pushed away my real life Friends some times. Just wanted to comment this because it felt nice to let out. :)

on the first day of school in 8th grade my English teacher ousted me for admitting to spending the summer on Facebook. at the time I rolled my eyes and wondered how someone could possibly hate social media. Facebook allowed me to talk to people who never talked to me in person, and instagram (which had just become popular) was a cool new thing for cute pics and weird challenges. throughout high school it took control of my life. I got snapchat in 9th grade due to peer pressure, and was constantly scrolling mindlessly through Facebook, instagram, and other platforms trying to become "somebody". during college I constantly saw "friends" out at parties and bars and rubbing it in my face when I hadn't been invited. I would delete a picture if it didnt get a certain number of likes in a certain time and worshipped my unfollowers app. yes I was that person who had the stupid app. now as a senior in college I recently rose up and deactivated both my instagram and Facebook. social media was truly making me unhappy and ruining my college experience. I was so caught up in not being invited to trashy parties and not getting mindless comments from people I barely knew about my appearance to enjoy the things and people I did have. I am so much happier without them and wish I had listened to my 8th grade English teacher earlier.

YES!! I second this entire video. I was growing an Instagram account for a niche I was specifically passionate about last year and I felt as though if I didn’t follow all of the accounts back in the same niche that it was a negative thing so I did and then turned around and went through and unfollowed a plethora of accounts and as much as I wanted to support everyone who potentially supported me, it was so beneficial for my mental health to just follow accounts / back that I genuinely enjoy and cut out certain things from my constant viewing. Saying it out loud I feel as though it should be an obvious thing to do but I know so many people need to hear it aside from me through talking to others with similar experiences ❤️ also YES on the capitalizing and just chilling. I discovered you this morning and watching your videos somehow helps me to appreciate myself more. I've gone through quite a lot of influencer videos but I've never been affected this much.

thanks for this! I deleted all my social media on news years day because I'm fed up of all my days going into a black hole. Tiktok is actually so difficult to control because theres just a constant flow of content and it's so easy to forget what you were doing. I delete youtube too because I was wasting time watching videos I didn't actually care about, but i just saw that you uploaded this and its refreshing. I'm going to clear out my subcriptions now :)

I love that feeling when you watch a video and truly listen and understand the whole thing and it leaves you feeling motivated and positive. This video did that for me. It is giving me more confidence in my distance from social media and I am 100% about it.

This video being on my fav social media platform about how to stop letting social media ruin my life hits different. Ironic? More like ICONIC.

i really needed to hear these tips because social media really affected me by caring about likes & all that dumb stuff & it just pressured me to try to post everyday which is pointless when it’s better to just live in the moment & live your life in a more fun way if that makes any sense

ahh yeah i really needed to hear the "having a bunch of likes and followers and all that isn't gonna make you happy" because i get so caught up in the little dopamine boosts but then end up feeling so bad about myself when i could have used that energy to do smth i genuinely love or be around people who make me feel comfortable and like i'm good enough

Two things, one, I love these videos, it’s like having an online older sister. And I don’t have an older sister so it’s nice. Two, LOVE THE MAKEUP TODAY I thought it was a weird comments to make but I had to!

This helped me so much. This year, especially 2020, I have grown so much as a person. I gained so much confidence, grew into a style that reflected my personality and what I felt comfortable in, and my lifestyle really altered to how I wanted to live. My mental health was so good (now it's kind of bad but that's mostly cause of school😭). When school started, I started to go downhill a little bit with going on social media all the time. This helped me to really just not care what I post, I unfollowed a bunch of people on all social media, and now my tiktok feed and insta feed is filled with people and things that make me happy. One of my goals this year was to spend time doing things I love that don't involve my phone and this video was the extra boost that gave me motivation to really follow up on that goal🥰

Whenever I went on Twitter I noticed that I was kind of overwhelming myself because I followed so many people and I would see things that aren't even related to the people I follow and I was like ???? where did you come from ?? So I unfollowed about half of the people and my mind is so much clearer. In the time of abundance where there are millions of people posting, it's super important to be selectively insular just for your own mental clarity :)

I just deleted all mine, hahaha. All I have now is Discord, KZbin (not channel, I just use it to watch videos), Pinterest and my podcast C'est La Me (go check it out if ya wanna). So...yup. I gained a lot of clarity after deleting it, however, it's not for everyone.

Thanks so much for making this video Nikki, it’s genuinely so helpful. I’ve had a really shit time with social media recently, many times have contemplated just deleting everything or having a fresh start but just couldn’t let go of it - all my posts are memories of my life and I really love seeing what my close friends are up to. I need to actually start unfollowing people who bring nothing good into my life. Thank you for this video!❤️

as someone who largely grew up without any social media (well who am I kidding I'm still growing up but whatever), I can attest to the fact that social media is hella weird and can mess with you in so many ways. I utilize the screen time feature on Apple devices and it really helps, but it's still so hard and it's really refreshing to see someone with a large positive following talk about this topic in an honest and thoughtful way
