As a CC student, I’m definitely thankful for CC, it gave me time to become more mentally mature, like if I went straight to uni, I would’ve had the high school mindset still and died. Even though Calc 3 is choking me right now, UMich CS, I’m coming for you, only two more semesters! 🤓

I go to UCR right now and it was honestly not my first choice. The first year was honestly pretty hard. However, I'm now in my second year and have been happier than I have ever been. I got way more involved this year and met a lot of really great people. I'm doing way better in school, work, and hold various leadership positions in clubs. If you are in hs, DON'T FRET SO MUCH ABOUT THE SCHOOL YOU GO TO. Focus on which school will give you a good experience. The prestige of the school honestly only matters for very specific careers and even with those careers you can get around going to a school w/o a lot of prestige. You just have to make the best of your situation. Come at it with a positive attitude and you may realize how great the school actually is CC seemed like the best choice for her, but I feel like a lot of hs students put way too much stress on which school they get into.

yes i agree with you 100% ! this is my own personal experience that i wanted to share in case anyone was going through something similar. Wow thanks for sharing your story. I was also a transfer student and I recently just graduated from UC Berkeley. My community college experience was very similar to yours and yes, the best advice I would give to current CC students is exactly what you said. To not focus too much on the future and focus on what’s in front of you. Also, just like you, I struggled with public speaking so I took a lot of online classes that were offered at my CC which was very helpful. Now that your at cal, my main advice is to do as much as you can in the very little time that you have. Like you said, your almost in your senior year and it prob feels like you just got there. Your only at Cal for 4 semesters which fly by quick (just like your 3 semesters at CC). That was my main regret at Cal.

Omg, this is so crazy. I had a very similar college and transfer journey. I attended UCR for a year because I wanted the freshman college experience. I went through the same motions as you. I always knew deep down that this school wasn't a good fit for me and thought I was going to go crazy if I stayed any longer. It was fun and people were cool, but I had the same gut feeling. I decided to go back to a local cc for a year and was accepted yesterday to UCSB! Best decision I have ever made.

I really needed this. I am not likely to get into any UC because during my sophomore year of high school I was in and out of the hospital due to medical complications and had 4 Cs and failed a class both semesters. Freshman year I had a 3.8 and 3.9 and Junior year I had a 4.3 and 4.5 GPA. This really helped to motivate me to get straight As in community college and transfer to a better school and not let that one school year define my educational capabilities. Thank you so much and I wish you success in whatever you do.

Thank you so much for posting this! This is literally almost exactly what I did and I haven't heard of anyone else taking the UC - CC - UC route!! I went to UCSD for my freshman year and hated it, so I transferred to a community college for my sophomore year and I just committed to Berkeley last week! Some of the things you said ring so true, especially how you never doubted your decision to leave. So happy you're finally where you want to be and hopefully I'll see you around Cal this fall! :)

Could you tell me more about your credit transfer from Uc to cc or did you have to start from scratch? I just finished my first year and I’m a little unhappy with it and I’ve been thinking of doing cc and then Uc
@girlsleuth1
@girlsleuth1 4 жыл бұрын
Pp C Sure! The main thing you want to do is satisfy the IGETC requirements because they’ll take care of all UC gen ed requirements so you’ll just have to focus on your lower division major classes. You can find a list of the IGETC requirements on google. I took 9 AP classes in high school and I think all but 2 of them helped satisfy IGETC requirements. At community I still had to take 2 semesters of spanish to satisfy the foreign language requirement, a physical science course, and then a few humanities courses outside of my major. Also, if you do UC - CC and back to UC it’s really important to join the honors program (it’s called TAP at LACCD schools) bc a majority of UC transfers at all 9 campuses are TAP, and they’ll require you to take 15 units of honors credit. Since my IGETC was mostly done I knocked mine out in 2 semesters plus one winter session which was hard but not impossible, especially since you can turn 2 non-honors classes into honors by talking to your professor and filling out a contract. If you do TAP, you can also apply for what’s called a transfer acceptance guarantee (TAG) which guarantees admission to any one UC that isn’t UCSD, UCLA, or Cal. I picked UCSB for my TAG and got in! Finally, your major matters because it also depends on your major classes and how far you are in completing the lower divisions. Every UC campus has different requirements, but you don’t necessarily have to complete all of them to get in. For example, I’m an English major so we don’t have a ton of lower division requirements anyway but I got in even though I’m missing 2 LD English classes which I’ll have to take at Berkeley. My cc Shakespeare class did transfer over but my UCSD English classes were more useful for satisfying IGETC than for my major. I hope that helps!
@TechVHD
@TechVHD 4 жыл бұрын
girlsleuth1 were you always a English Major or did you switch? and did you go to a LACCD or outside LACCD? If you are okay with saying it, which one/ones cc did you take classes from? Did you only take the two semesters and a winter? Was it during the first fall spring and winter after leaving UCSD? Tap and tag are not required right? But you did both? Did you do honors classes/honors program at your CC?
@girlsleuth1
@girlsleuth1 4 жыл бұрын
ClashOfClans I actually switched majors twice - I was admitted to UCSD as a psych major and switched to history during freshman year and then became an English major when I enrolled at CC. And yes; I only attended LACCD schools. You are allowed to take courses at multiple LACCD campuses but I did most of my in-person classes (with one exception) and advising at the campus closest to my house and then took some online classes my main campus didn’t offer but were offered through other schools. For example, my main campus didn’t offer English 215, but Harbor college had an online class I could enroll in. And yep, I went to CC for fall 19, winter 19, and spring 20 immediately after my freshman year at SD. I did both Tap (which is the honors program) and tag - they aren’t technically required but are highly recommended. According to the LAVC TAP website, more than 85% of TAP (honors) CC students have been accepted to UCLA whereas less than 30% of non-TAP CC students were accepted. It makes a big difference! Plus they have a wide curriculum of accepted classes so it’s very likely that the honors courses will overlap with your major/IGETC classes. Hope that helps!

Hey Angie! Thanks for sharing your transfer experience, bc that is something I am going thru right now! Currently at cc after a year at a state school. I knew I didn't want to be there, and thinking it would change if I went didn't overshadow my constant thought of wanting to leave. I remember doing so much research on transferring to uc form state and looking at any resources out there. But I made the decision to go to cc in order to make it a point I would transfer. It was such a big decision i made on my own. I have learn so much about myself and how my experiences at state and cc shapes how I see academics, people, and everything in between! It is such an unorthodox journey, but a personal one at the same time!

I 100% agree with everything you mentioned. Community College is completely under-rated and many HS students do not understand the value you can gain from it. I did horribly in HS, mainly b/c I was focused on the wrong things. After graduation, my mom demanded that I had to do something. Even though I was scared, it was the greatest decision I ever made! And back to what you said, it's ALL about the MIND SET. I was motivated and even though it wasn't a university that offered soo many social events, my determination and focus (living in the moment) made my CC experience that much greater. I got involved on campus, and began building my confidence after seeing that I was college material by passing all my classes. The experience is definitely what you make of it. And I was too busy being excited for the next semester with the great group of friends I had made. Ironically enough, CC were some of the best years of my life. It gave me time to mature, learn how to schedule and organize my time, and in the end it taught me how to be responsible. If you don't have the desire, it may not be an enjoyable transition. But please, if you decide to pursue a higher education get excited for yourself and know that you belong there. Coming from someone who is a first generation college student, being the first collegiate member of my entire family, I thought the idea of succeeding in college was impossible. It is very much possible! please believe in yourself and pursue what makes you happy. I found happiness and passion through my education. After CC I transferred to my DREAM school UCLA and now I'll be attending medical school. You can do it!

This is literally so weird but I dropped out of UCR after my first quarter too (I spent like a two weeks during second semester) because I got pneumonia in January and since I have asthma and the air quality is shit over there I had to leave. I also left at an awkward time so I couldn’t register at my CC for spring so now I’m waiting for summer! You have no idea how much this video helped me you are basically all my goals put into one😂😂 I really lost my way after I left UCR because I felt like such a failure for leaving school, but thank god your video came up in my recommended! This has given me so much courage and motivation to start working towards my goals and allowed me to realize that I’m not alone 💛💛

I legit relate to this so much. I had pretty decent stats applying out of highschool but I only got into UCR, SDSU, and CSUN. Looking back I really regret choosing computer science as my major because it’s hard as heck to get in for that major. I almost committed to going to UCR but last second I had a mental breakdown and decided to attend community college 😅. I felt pretty ashamed going to a cc because it’s expected in my culture that you just go straight to a four year. Ive maintained a 4.0 gpa in community college so far I’ve done extra curriculars that I enjoy and I have a job that I love. I’m applying this fall and I feel so much better applying this time around. I chose a major that I actually like and isn’t super impacted. Now i look at going to community college as one of the best decisions I’ve made.

I applied to transfer to uc berkeley as media studies major as well! I just got my results back a few days ago and I was waitlisted. It honestly shocked me that I was even waitlisted as it is a reach school of mine. My gpa is only 3.3x so I didn't have high hopes from the beginning. I am opting in on the waitlist and I hope I can get in! I feel like my gpa is a lot lower average, so it makes me doubt my chances of getting in. Plus, it took me four years in cc and numerous Ws to transfer, so I thought that schools wouldn't like that. I think it was my personal insights that got me waitlisted in the first place since I did not do any volunteer work or clubs. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and wish we can be classmates in the near future! (btw I was accepted to ucd and ucsc, still waiting on ucsb, ucsd and ucla!)

I'm not trying to go to uc Berkeley but I always wanted to go to uc Santa Cruz and I got in out of high school but it was wayyy too expensive. I ended up going to Penn state for 3 semesters (I had just moved to the us from Canada too oof), hated it and knew I always wanted to go to uni in California. I finished my sophomore year last year studying abroad in New Zealand, then moved to California. I went to two community colleges in the Bay Area and I'm going to transfer in the fall! Deciding what uc right now but at the end of the day what my point is that I totally relate to your experience of multiple schools and honestly this whole college journey so far has been crazy for me... It's hard going from a 4 yr to a cc bc you don't get all the support but I knew this is what I needed to do because I didn't want to spend my entire college experience being unhappy. It feels good after this year grinding in community college to show my family that I am indeed not a failure in a way oof ... getting compared to others is the worst and im glad that I did not let that get in the way of what I wanted to do and achieve. So if you're someone shuffling around schools, I totally understand and I believe in you and you can definitely go to the school you want to and achieve what you want if you put in the work and have a positive mindset. We transfer students out here taking those ballsy risks and that's what makes us be more prepared for decisions later in life and be exposed to more opportunities, people and experiences 😎😎😎

Pro of CC Transfer: Save money and greater appreciation of time at UC in those years. Con of CC Transfer: May be less likely to land internships (especially multiple internships) early on at a CC vs. starting at a UC.

It's funny because you started your journey through your CC right before I did. I started with my eye on HAAS in the summer of 2018. But I wanted to get as much done as I could to give myself the best possible chance to get into Berkeley. So, I'm still here at my CC taking one final class, but I did get accepted to HAAS a few weeks ago. It's funny how your experience was that everything went by so fast at the CC, for me these last 6 semesters and 21 classes since the summer of 2018 feel like they have gone extremely slow. this is like what I'm trying to figure out now. I was debating between CSULA or cc for the longest up until the deadline to commit and then choose cc but was wondering if I made the wrong decision because of the stigma around cc and I felt like I've always wanted that whole freshman year experience and started looking at UCR. But at the same time being a senior through all of this idk if I'd be ready to move although it's not that far it's a commuter school, in the desert, etc but then UCR extended their deadline so it's kinda this one chance if I want to go to a 4 year now I'm just so stuck and really don't know what to do so thank you this helped a lot

Great video. I should've done something like this when I was in this situation as well. As someone who had the same feelings towards UCR as a freshman over 10 years ago, I think you did the right thing. I walked into UCR with the hater mindset and thought ranking/status was everything (it isn't). I did an inter-UC transfer my sophomore year and only UCSB accepted me. I took the offer....and I didn't like it there. Post-grad, no one gives a crap about your undergrad or where your UC "ranks." It's about your skillset and internships and experience. I should've just stayed at UCR. But yes, if you want to go to a different UC (whatever your reasons are), just start out at a CC. You are guaranteed transfer to many UCs since they have a CC student quota they have to meet due to the TAG (Transfer Admission Guarantee) program. When you're already in a UC and wanting to transfer to another UC, you are considered only AFTER UCs have accepted CC students qualified for TAG -- and at that point, your acceptance is just based off of which UC happens to have remaining spaces open. Every year, there is usually 1 campus that fits this bill. In my year, it was UCSB because I know like 4 other UCR students who ended up going there. And you generally will not make higher UCs like UCLA or Cal unless you have SUPER STELLAR grades. TL;DR: CC all the way if you didn't make your dream/goal UC.
@AngieYoo
@AngieYoo 4 жыл бұрын
yes i agree that after high school, no one cares about what school you went to for undergrad and it’s important that you make the most out of it yourself and just focus on your own experience!! thank you for watching sharing your thoughts and journey! :) also yes transferring from a CC is definitely easier!

I ultimately decided against attempting a UC-to-UC transfer, and I never would have been bold enough to take that leap of faith and drop out and go to a CC. As a first generation college students I am full of fear for college applications, I know I could have gotten a way better GPA (3.6) I just didn’t know the importance of grades and extracurricular...I hope if I don’t go to a UC and only qualify for a community I hope I don’t disappoint my parents😔🙃

I just transfer from CC to Cal Poly SLO. I also got accepted to UC Davis, Cal Poly Pomona, CSULB, CSUN and Woodbury University. Dont give up guys CC is not bad it will help you mature mentally and create your own schedule.

Hello! I'm Econ major in cc now. Is it okay to take History class (for IGETC) as pass instead of actual letter grade? Thank you in advance!

this video was so inspiring and i have so many questions, to start off, i’m currently a junior in high school and just thinking about my senior year and beginning to start my college apps, i want to be able to get into a good school such as UC’s but at the same time i want to go to a community college to really “restart” everything i did to sort of transition myself into something better i guess. but, it’s kind of hard for me because UC schools has been my dream since the start of high school and i’m very apprehensive that i’m not gonna get in, so do you have any advice for someone who’s sort of struggling in high school and how they can improve themselves academically? sorry, for the long and confusing paragraph LOL. thank youu

hello!!! for me, time management and staying organized is a huge part !! at the beginning of the week, i like to make a to-do list of all the assignments i have and every morning, i schedule out my day and set goals ~ also if you need help with something don't be afraid to reach out to your teachers because they are more than willing to help! i struggled a lot with ap calc in high school so i got help from my teacher every day during snack LOL good luck with college apps and i really hope you get into your dream schools!!!!

My path brought me cc (2012-2013) the navy 2014-2018), cc(2018-2020) and now a UC davis transfer! First try a cc wasn’t for me I actually failed 2 classes my 2nd semester. Though the point is it’s not the end of the world and now I’m more than prepared for college.

In my senior year, I got rejected by all the UC's and Cal states I applied to. I applied to an online school jokingly, which I currently attend. So, just this week, I finished the UC application to transfer. Hopefully, my 3.92 GPA gets me into the school that I want.

oh my goodness I just submitted my SIR to UCR. I’ve been contemplating if this is the right choice or if going to community would be better. I’m so glad I stumbled across this video, it’s so helpful! Unfortunately, I’m aiming for a REACH REACH school (an Ivy) and I doubt it’s possible to transfer from UCR to an Ivy, let alone from CC. I’m so stuck, I don’t think UCR is the place for me for multiple reasons. I got bashed when talking about wanting to transfer out of UCR because people thought I was “ungrateful” and unrealistic for wanting to transfer, but I feel like I could so much more when not being restricted by my opportunities at UCR. This video was like a sign to me, but I still don’t know what to do to transfer to my reach school oops. Thank you Angie, best wishes to you at Berkeley!

ah good luck on making a decision!!! you can always try it out at UCR and if you truly feel like it's not for you, going to CC and transferring is always an option thats there for ya :) i hope you have an amazing college experience and dont regret anything!! thank you for sharing your story :)

I'd argue you'd be more likely to have more research experience at UCR as opposed to UCB. It's less competitive in that sense, which would certainly benefit you in the long run if you take advantage of UCR's opportunities.
