@@meatloafmike man I got lucky, I traded an old guitar amp for a 2019 Alienware Aurora R8 with a i5-9400, 16gb of ram, a 1tb hardrive and a Radeon rx560x. It was still better than my Xbox one x performance wise out of the gate, regardless I sold my Xbox and TV for 325$, bought a 30$ 1080 p 60hz monitor off marketplace, bought some 17 dollar onn brand computer speakers from Walmart, got a hammy down keyboard and mouse from my brother's old build and then I bought a gtx 1070 8gb for 160$ and a 700 watt EVGA psu and threw those in there. Still need a SSD as load times are notoriously slow but all in all she is a beast for what she is and runs apex max settings 130 fps, destiny 3 max settings same deal, 130 fps, still testing other games as this is my first gaming PC but I'm more than happy with it. Now I just need a USB mic to talk to people and use my sundaras, better keyboard and mouse, a TB ssd , a better monitor and then eventually a better graphics card so I can use ray tracing and such but I'm extremely happy I made the switch to PC. Thing runs games solid for what it is

My work had gotten rid of a few PCs. I asked the IT guy if I could take some home. I got two Dell Inspirons with i5 4440s and 8 GB ram as well as another with an i3- 2120 with 8GB RAM. Upgraded the i3 to an i5, and I turned all 3 into budget gaming rigs for family, adding SSDs. Used a 950 on the Sandy Bridge, and 1050ti on the 4th gen models (this was way before the current gen CPUs were announced). Everyone is happy with their performance

Then spent about $200 on upgrades over the 4 years to what it is now. I will note though, that trying to build a rig like this nowadays may be very difficult thanks to scalpers and the like. Finding a gtx 1060 now ( used and new) for a good price is tough, even my 580 is apparently worth $279 brand new now at best buy even though i legit paid $75 for it less than a year ago..... that should probably give you an idea on how bad the market is right now thanks to the low supply/scalpers/miners ruining everything for all of us. I got very very lucky when i decided to build my 2nd rig a few months ago with a ryzen 3600/rx 580, 2 ssd and 16gb ram for $300. Had i waited alittle longer.... would have spent $300 on just the cpu and motherboard combo alone. Man hopefully prices come back down soon.

What a difference 3 years makes! My 10 year old Shuttle SG41J1 that I've been trying to modernize has presented some unique challenges. The original Celeron 2.5 GHz dual core was upgraded to a 3.0 GHZ Core 2 Quad, a nice boost! CPU cooling was another issue. The stock Celeron cooler could handle 65W, but the new CPU TDP was 95W. I found a Thermaltake cooler that did the job, but it was a DC (3 pin) fan and the mobo can only control PWM, so the new fan always runs at 2500 rpm (cool, but noisy). Finding a PWM fan for LGA775 AND fits mechanically with the mobo layout turned out to be not so easy. SSD upgrade - check! The SATA-II ports were good enough for a new 240 GB SSD, which boots Win10 20H2 in under 10 seconds! With only 3 SATA ports, the never-used optical drive was removed in favor of additional HDDs. So far, so good. Adding USB3 to the stock array of USB2 ports seemed in order. The problem is there's one PCIe slot and one PCI(!) slot. The PCIe is really there only for GFX (installing anything in PCIe disables the on-board graphics!). So the PCI slot is really the only option. I found one vendor that sold PCI USB3 cards, but sadly, no joy. The card would not work with the mobo. The last challenge was RAM... the mobo supports DDR2-800 and has 4GB installed in its 2 slots (not bad for 2010). It can support 8 GB, but 4GB DDR2 sticks that are not AMD are really hard to find without blowing the budget. Sigh. Without the extra DRAM, spending for a GFX upgrade was just out of the question, and the project has gone to the back burner. So, while I have a quite usable, moderately fast 10-year-old system, sadly it will never be a console-killer. I think it's time to build a new system...!

Hey a little tip to first time viewers of PC tech content, I would strongly recommend replacing the power supply (PSU) for something better in this system if possible. The last thing you want is to spend all of this money just for it to be for naught because your PSU went bad and took things with it. Also look into changing the CPU cooler to something like a noctua nh-l9i or nh-l9x65 both should fit in this case and offer better airflow and better acoustics for about $40-$50. You could probably find cheaper ones but those just come in mind for that CPU cooler height clearance. The reason why he didn't mention these upgrades is because it makes waste from tossing the PSU and CPU cooler. Those upgrades would add about $100-$115.
@deyeatdapoopoo7582
@deyeatdapoopoo7582 5 жыл бұрын
It makes no sense from a budget perspective to do any of those things you mentioned unless they pose a risk or issue which in this case they're not even close to being. The CPU was running anywhere from 50-60C under full load which is already very, very cool. On Ivy Bridge CPUs anywhere up to about 85C under max load is fine for 24/7 use. If the fans were a bit loud he has plenty of temperature headroom to quiet them down using BIOS settings or SpeedFan while keeping temps cool, so there is absolutely zero reason to waste money on an expensive Noctua cooler. Regarding the power supply he has a 120W model of the RX 570 and an Ivy Bridge Core i5 system only pulls a maximum of 90-100W by itself. Therefore, worst case scenario power consumption for this rig is 220W, well below the maximum rated 350W of the power supply. Again, no need to change. If it were a 250W unit though, only then would an upgrade be definitely needed as running low-end units at or very close to their max rated capacity continuously does cause them to fail prematurely.

Speaking of their IPC being so strong in earlier models, the 4690S was a particular little beast. The IPC they put on that refresh chip actually put it neck-and-neck with a factory clocked 4690K, while using less power and producing much less heat (albeit it WAS a locked chip). Paired with n H97 board, GTX 970, 16GB of Crucial Ballistix Sport, and a 500GB Samsung ssd, made for nearly instant win7 boot. I got 4 dell optiplexes with i7 4790, 16gb ram, 500gb hdd for $160 each. I spent $350 per machine in total. Evga 500w psu upgrade, rx 570, 256gb ssd, aftermarket cpu cooler and new case fans at the front and back. Each machine has all matching sticks so no headaches in the future. All fans in the systems are new and running quietly. Part of the cost here is getting the atx power adapter and the cpu fan adapter as well as a molex to dc adapter. But all worth it vs a brand new $350 pc.

Same thing here. Someone upgraded an office and gave me a Vostro 270. We put EVGA 500 PSU, HD 5870 graphics, and eight gigs of ram. Nice little starter gaming pc. And cheap for those that can't afford the latest and greatest

Love doing these projects. Would have liked to see you put everything in to a new case! Dont really need a window with green PCB mobo but even NZXT Tempest case ($30 used IIRC) with a couple intake fans! Great video!

5:20 I have a fairly weird ram configuration in my PC. I have 20Gb, Two 8Gb stick and two 2 Gb sticks. Have had no issues with it ever. lol
@skogach
@skogach 5 жыл бұрын
Worst memory upgrade I ever saw, it was fine configuration 4 gigs per channel, dual channel mode. When you added 8 gig it became really weird 12 gig channel and 4 gig another. Now it runs in single channel mode, twice is slow. You should really prefer speed over capacity in this case, this memory slow enough as it is, and if you really need more memory, you better trow off those 2 gig sticks the more so they 1333 MHz, and make it 8, 4 and 4, 1600 MHz.
@killertruth186
@killertruth186 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but does that motherboard support that speed?
@skogach
@skogach 5 жыл бұрын
@@killertruth186, That does, but If other don't, most BIOS support FSB overclocking, that affects both CPU and RAM clock, so you can overclock more if you have faster RAM.

Why are you complaining about an aging system with mismatched memory stick with only purpose is for casual gaming?
@skogach
@skogach 5 жыл бұрын
@@9inchpp Surely you can neglect such nonsense as matching memory sticks when you have top of the line pc since hardy anyone can tell the difference between like 120 and 125 fps, but when your pc struggling somewhere around 30, every frame counts.

Yeah, different sized slots mean you drop down to single channel. Screw running at the slowest speed, not balancing it halves your speed

Guys, If his GPU was running near 100% then he didn't have a CPU bottleneck in those situations. Therefore Dual Channel would not have helped those situations at all. I have no doubt there are situations where something like a 2133MHz kit in Dual Channel would give results of up to 20% higher but again for the situations in the video it's a non-issue.

@@photonboy999 Even if the GPU was running at 100% it still would of increased the performance considerably, it helps with the FPS dips and keeps the game play much smoother having that extra bandwidth

You can run 3 Modules in dual-channel, if (for example) channel A has 2x4gb and channel B has 1x8GB. Need more information? -> wikipedia "dual channel" ;-)

Been really helpful, im trying to upgrade my pc for streaming. I allready have a gtx 960 installed(its a handmedown but when has that stopped anyone)and I am planning on installing some ram and an ssd since i still have the stock hard drive and 2x4gb sticks. Also I have a 3rd gen core i3 and was wondering if it would slow the in game performance down(like fps) and if you think it might be able to stream somewhat smoothly.
