The consistency of the stock lengths, and diameters usually determines how brave I am with my rapid planes. Return planes I keep close. Then rewrite the geometry for the finish pass with cutter comp. I've started "back" finishing my parts with a profile tool. Finish pass starts at the back of the part. Then I feed out away from the chuck with one continuous pass. Back across the parts O.D. then down the Face. Great finish, less tool deflection, and reduced chatter.
