This video shows a few screen shots of a trip I took yesterday and how I actually used Foreflight during the approach into the airport.

Great suggestions for Foreflight as a situational awareness reference. Thanks for sharing.

I noticed in both airplanes you have the iPad mounted on the windshield. I've considered that but at least in FL, that direct sunlight will over heat the iPad if your stuck on the ramp to long. Even on the yoke cross bar in my Baron I've had it over heat twice when the airport was busy and I couldn't take off right away. I try to keep a towel handy to cover it but have you had any issues with overheating?
@nizexlizzy7 жыл бұрын
Baron Pilot Yes, I got some small fans and actually modified my RAM mount so it has a top and the fans sit behind the ipad. This helped a great deal but it will still over heat if it is really hot. If it is hot I usually will just keep it out of the mount until after I take off. A piece of white paper actually works better than a towel since it reflects the light very well and doesn't end up killing the air flow so badly. There is actually a company on Sporty's that sells a fully cooled mount but it is costly and not sure how well it works. I didn't purchase it because it uses batteries in the unit to run the fans and figured it would be much heavier than I wanted to put on the window.

Glenn Hancock Thanks for the reply, I seen that unit but I have yet to meet anyone that is using it. I always have power running to my iPad so if I had a mount with fans I would prefer it piggybacked off that power (or vise versa). I'm currently using a mini on my yoke and an air on my cross bar (yes overkill lol but the air will eventually run Avidyne's new software) So for now I will continue to keep my eye out for a cooling solution. Thanks

2/15/2019 Is there any functionality to the Foreflight HSI in the AHRS? If yes, please explain.

To each his own, I guess. I like to have the hazard warnings at 100/1000 particularly in the mountains. If you don't like the hazard warnings when you're landing, you can use the "hazard advisor" setting which allows you to specify a speed below which the hazard warnings won't happen. So, if your approach speed is 80, set the hazard advisor to 85 and you won't get warnings while you're approaching to land.

I thought I said that if I were flying through mountains I would leave it higher and I change it on approaches but if not, that is what I do. I also fly a lot where I am not in mountains so less of an issue for me.

Is there a glide scope on fore flight?

You should always have your approach fix you are going to use to your route that way you don’t have to select it later. One less step you have to do inflight.

Nice video! How do you get the 3 different screes to appear simultaneously? I can get the split screen side by side but don't know how to change that.
@nizexlizzy8 жыл бұрын
Look up at the top of the screen. There are icons to the right of the little gear icon that turns on different parts of the screen.

Great video! What are you using for gps input to the ipad? Stratus? Thanks!
@nizexlizzy8 жыл бұрын
+pietecasius If you want full info you have to use a Stratus as it is the only GPS unit Foreflight fully supports.
@nizexlizzy7 жыл бұрын
pietecasius Foreflight now supports the Garmin GDL39 so either unit works fine. I'm actually having more luck using the GDL39 than Stratus now. Stratus seems to lockup on me and doesn't handle the Own Ship very well.

Glenn Hancock Sentry is available now for ForeFlight...with a CO detector. And, of course, a GTX345 provides ADS-B in/out.

A yellow color distract you? Seriously? Lower the hazardous warning setting in an IFR approach... great advice. That'll keep people safer, no doubt.

Watched until about the 2 min mark...then you stated yellow indications on syn vision bothered you. Get more experience....it should perk you up as a pilot but should NEVER EVER be a distraction. Get more hours and please don't offer syn vision as a distraction. It is a tool. Get your IR and learn to manage multiple instruments with confidence.
@nizexlizzy7 жыл бұрын
Sean Moore Not sure what your point is with the "more experience" comment. I have almost 3000 hours and fly 300 plus hours a year. My only point was that having yellow showing up in the middle of an approach was not very useful and IS distracting. I guess you must have a lot more time flying than me so maybe when I grow up more it won't bother me.
@BigChiefPops6 жыл бұрын
Completely agree on the presenters opinion of the color distraction... and maybe not a distraction but unnecessary workload to evaluate. I understand you point.

Shoulda left it like Bob Levittan did: "To each his own." Mr. Hancock recognized what was a distraction and took action to reduce/eliminate it. Many pilots would be alive today if they followed suit.

Glenn, good job demonstrating some features of Foreflight. I find it a great addition to safe instrument flying primarily because of added situational awareness. Great name, BTW..

Glenn, I've looked at many of the Foreflight video and found yours to be the best. For a newbie with "synthetic vision" you have presented just the right amount of highlights. Thanks a lot. Very helpful.

Might want to mention that the altitude depicted by ForeFlight is GPS-derived and therefore unreliable, especially if you've turned warnings down to 25'. At that point you're probably within the margin of error for GPS-derived altitude.
@nizexlizzy8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I don't think I even mentioned altitude read outs on the ipad as you'd NEVER want to use those during any approach. The 25' setting was simply to keep the ipad from changing colors while you're trying to focus on the approach itself.
@dougharvey28396 жыл бұрын
This was an RNAV approach, so by definition it was using GPS altitude. The question is then: from where does the iPad get its GPS altitude? In my airplane, Foreflight gets its GPS data from my GTN 650 via Connext, so the Foreflight altitude would be as reliable as that being used for the approach.

The only question I had was if as in one of the pictures showed your ground speed at 96 I wonder what Your indicated speed was. Is that a bit low for a 310?
@nizexlizzy6 жыл бұрын
James Basinger i usually fly approach around 120 and then down to 100 or so over numbers. The 310 settles pretty good at 90

The article you're refering to is complete BS. Hint, when you look at the bottom of the page and see a bunch of dumbass articles about stupid crap there is a very good chance the one you're reading is total BS as well.
