Very helpful, Alyn. I wasn't quite sure how to figure out the exact place I should be when the moon is visible from the location I am.Tomorrow is the last supermoon of this year and I really appreciate this valuable info. Thanks a lot!!!

THIS is the video I've been looking for over the past week. I have a moon rise video concept in mind that I believe has some great potential and I thank you in advance for this video and the help you provide in it.

Dustin Dilworth thanks a lot Dustin glad you found the video useful! I recently made a blog about taking these kind of moonrise shots and I'm hoping to produce a much more in depth updated version of the video above :) thanks for getting in touch and good luck with your shot!

Awesome stuff Alyn. I use TPE a lot, but never got around to figuring out some of that more advanced stuff you have just shown. Great work and thanks!

Great video Alyn! I use TPE a lot and yet still learnt something from this video. You made what can be quite a complicated seeming app to use, easy to understand.

Thanks for this! I've used TPE a little, but tend to use Sun Surveyor on my Android phone - however the altitude stuff here is really handy, not tried it before. Just using it now to see if I stand a chance of the 27th Lunar Eclipse as I'll be in an alpine valley- looks like from my hotel I have no chance, so I shall do a little research with the tool now!

The other night I drove like a rally driver around country roads trying and failing to get a good moonrise pic. I knew roughly the direction of the moonrise but If only I'd seen this first !!!

I don't really mess with astro at all but am guessing there are charts for you to figure what the size (width/OD) of the moon is? = at a certain distance/ time of the year? Thanks for any responses in advance.

It would be good, if you could plug in the values you know, and it would show you the times, dates and position.

That's something that PhotoPills actually does :) It's a lot better for moon planning in fact. There's also a new TPE 3D app which I haven't tried yet as I don't own an iOS device

Does this have other options other than the moon? Like the the north star, for instance if i want to do star lines, or for the milkyway ect?? Thanks
@AlynWallace6 жыл бұрын
The North Star is always perfectly North, don't see why you'd need an app? For the Milky Way I use PhotoPills

Alyn Wallace im a complete beginner in astronomy. I meant so i could roughly work out composition before i get somewhere with satelite pics. I went to a old local windmill the other night and made my first attempt at star trails with it in the foreground. It was facing west if i had known that then i could of looked for another subject. If that makes sense. Thanks for the reply

Hi Alyn, watching this again and I was wondering how you knew you were in the correct spot when you arrived in the field. Supposing you had gone 100 yards too far to the left and then at the crucial moment the moon comes up you wouldn't have the correct angle for the shot you had in mind. Thanks.

Used the GPS on my smartphone to pinpoint my location. And you can use satellite view to find some markers (maybe a bush or patch of land) to help you reassure yourself you're in the right place
