You learned python at the right time. I learned it when I saw someone super successful using it and just emulated them. The one regret I had was not doing a blue collar trade along with learning tech, as a buffer for the waves of blue collar & white collar employment. I absolutely implore and advise any younger person to do that

The best way to go from 0 python to be good enough to build a game a data visualization or backend website is the famous book (python crash course 3rd edition of 2023)

Cool, this is very timely - I'm an old coder with previous convictions for Pascal, C++, Cobol (code-a-saurus!), various kinds of Basic, Assembler, SQL. Having not coded (apart from SQL) for a few years I'd like to get going in Python for purposes of embedding it within Power BI and other data analysis type operations. Cheers Tiff! 👍

People used Cobol to do everything that any other programming language could do. There are object oriented versions of Cobol. There was at least one version of Cobol that was created specifically for, in turn, creating operating systems. The set of visible characters that are used to code or make up the syntaxe of a programming language is one thing. The compiled executable binary code is something else.

Python is the #1 choice for Data Science, Data Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing and so much more as well as heavilly used in backend server side web development. It's a nice language. Really having a fun time learning it compared to my most known languages like C, C++ and Java.

Python is quick and relatively easy to learn, but it's so slow compared to C/C++ when a lot of heavy duty maths is being done. It certainly has its place but I prefer a well optimised compiled program for speed.

Funny thing is that when I started in Data Science, the big debate was R vs Python. Given my experience with the demise of Silverlight, WPF, and UWP, I chose Python since learning it lead to many different pathways (as you point out). No disrespect to R, but it's a one trick pony.

I remember C++ was the go to for game development back in the 80s-90s, but now we got all sorts of languages to do game dev. I'm both a data scientist(econometrician) and game dev but I use python for data science, specifically machine learning, econometrics with R and game dev with C++, eh heh yeah I know C++.

You will likely have a better time getting Python down first then DSA after that learn a framework related to what you want to do. For example if you want to do web then learn Django or Flask. Freecodecamp has some good courses.
