I'm kinda nervous to comment this because I've never actually told anyone before, but I've been writing songs for 10 years! I don't play any instruments so haven't put actual music to any of them but they all have melodies. I'm actually really proud of a lot of the songs I've written so I don't know why I'm scared to share them with people. The past few years I've been struggling though, I wrote 8 songs in 2017 which was great, but then nothing in 2018, 3 in 2019 and I've just written 2 in July, I feel like after writing 2 songs this past month I'm maybe finding that spark again, there's no feeling like when you complete a song, I always cry for some reason. I'd really love to add music to my songs one day but think I might need other people to do that for me haha. xx
@pandaluna04 жыл бұрын
I've been writing songs for about two years... i wrote stories before - i still do, because i can say whatever i wanna say with far less trouble. anyway, i dont put a lot of thought into my songs.. i just let words flow out, so it takes about an hour to write a song. I'm not proud of most of them, but i think some of them are nice, and sometimes - too many times, tbh - i just can't write a thing. it all seems to be... empty. i hate those times, but i also know that they come to an end eventually, and at that moment i am more proud than ever, because i overcame the wall that held me back. think positive - those long breaks might actually allow you to carry more tension and passion into your songs. also, i dont show my stuff to anyone else too. i dunno why... it's private, in a way, and showing it seems like... openening up to other people without them trying to find out who i am first... i dunno why you dont show your songs, but... if that helped you... ya know

That seems so sweet, I wish I could write songs like you do. My only problem is that I can't be lyricist because I didn't inherit that from anyone unlike my sister who can rap, sing and even dance! I just wish I could be able to write good music and my poetic skills make it worse! I've tried so hard to make my poems into songs ,however it never works and no matter how hard I try......there's nothing I can do to make music the only thing I can do is think of the chorus but i can never match my lyrics with my chorus.. Please help, advice would be much appreciated!

This video was what got me into writing songs and what eventually led me to some of my best friends. I absolutely love writing music and it has become a release for emotions that I don’t know what to do with and also has been an anchor as I’ve been struggling with severe depression and anxiety. This video led me to what saved my life. Thank you so much Also, this is one of my more recent songs, pretty unrelated to the previous topic, but I hope y’all like it! Cupid’s Mistake When I met you back in the fall I was falling like a pic from a wall Caught in the heart and reeled right in I was to the moon and back again But we had sat too long like over steeped tea We were too bitter all my friends could see My heart was turning from gold to black The arrow didn’t stick but my heart cracked Cuz we were Cupid’s Mistake He regrets us to this very day We fought we made up You threatened to break up when you saw some guy talking to me We were Cupid’s Mistake The worst choice he ever could’ve made I feel bad for your roommates Who have to put up with you every single day We were Cupid’s Mistake Remember that walk around the lake I was on time you were an hour late Out at a bar playing wingman with your buddies Why don’t you find a new girlfriend at your parties Yeah we were Cupid’s Mistake He regrets us to this very day We fought we made up Im happy we broke up when you didn’t care what happened to me We were Cupid’s Mistake The worst choice he ever could’ve made I feel bad for your roommates Who have to put up with you every single day I wanna write a letter saying thank you For all the bullsh*t that you put me through Cause now I know what I want in a person I date Aka an IQ that’s higher than eight We were Cupid’s Mistake He regrets us to this very day We fought we made up You threatened to break up when you saw some guy talking to me We were Cupid’s Mistake The worst choice he ever could’ve made I feel bad for your roommates Who have to put up with you every single day We were Cupid’s Mistake I regret us to this very day We fought we broke up I glad my friends spoke up when they found out you were cheating on me We were Cupid’s Mistake There’s a lot more I want to say But I’m done with your bullsh!t Babe you were asking for it Don’t go asking me to stay We were Cupid’s Mistake

Thank you SO MUCH for this Malinda. One other tip I'd give from my experience is: whenever you don't feel like writing, listen to people who you admire, especially if they're a smaller creator, it's such a boost to get reminded of the reaction that what you're writing would create in another person's brain and of how much it feels like having a superpower. Also, for topics of songs, my best way of coming up with cool subjects is to just try to be more aware of the random thoughts that cross my mind in an instant, be it just 'I enjoy being awake at night' or 'I feel claustrophobic within my small town and I want to explore the world' or any thought you may have, anything can make a song once you extract the essence of what you want the song to convey. Songwriting truly is one of the most beautiful things I got to discover over the last few years, especially once you make a song and listen to it and have that mindblowing sensation of having made something that gives you a pleasurable feeling, it genuinely feels like magic, even moreso when sharing a song with someone else and having them relate to it, I just cannot express how much meaning it can give you.

i wrote a song about a really close friend i had... i loved her, but we grew apart - not by choice... please... if you have the time, would you read it? BACK WHEN WE WERE NAIVE: Skin to skin Matching sets of everything Holding hands while we both live Back when we were naïve. Playing games Pretending to be someone else Nothing else mattered then Now we have different plans. And I don’t wanna grow old without you there No, I don’t wanna lose hold of your warm hand. Talking lightly Forgetting ourselves in the glee Nothing between us like a wall We are both pure souls. Fate is fate There is no such thing as safe Feeling like I have gone deaf I'm all by myself. Can we meet again? Can we get rid of this pain? edit: wow! i didnt know people would actually like my song! thank you!!

There was a band in the 70s, I forgot which one, but their lyrics was a full band member. He couldn't play an instrument, he wasn't even poetic, but his words must have meant so much to the rest of the band, he was their only writer of lyrics. So that proves anything is possible.

These are tips that are also useful for regular writing. I'm a fanfic writer, and I've been working on a Star Wars/Wynonna Earp crossover for a while, but the return of the jedi equivalent hasn't been coming as quickly as I'd like due to covid, time, and other stuff. Its fine, though -- I just write other little things in the canon universes while saving to buy Jedi and take notes on that (the main stumbling block is that Jedi is my least favorite of the trilogy and also that except for the skeleton it'll be the most different adaptation, but I still need them notes)

There are no songwriting tricks that one can learn from someone else. My ideas come to me from a divine source. I started writing songs when I was 8 years old. Today, I produce my own songs in my recording studio because no one can envision my ideas as a final product the way I can. My advice to all songwriters out there is to follow your own instinct. Learn music production techniques from others so you can use them in your own creative process, but don't try to please anyone's taste. Be bold and brave in your creativity or it will never reach its unique artistic apex. Once I finish my songs, I do pay attention to which songs people like most. For example, my song "Cute Dude" is always men's favorite - men of all ages, races, and music preferences. I can't ignore that.

LOVE IS SUICIDE The truth is falling in love is suicide Guess that makes us all suicidal People say it's a beautiful thing But it's the reason we all drown Love Its something so hard yet so easy to do Cause it's hard to tell when you really knew Its something you don't ask for, being in love Love is like falling and not knowing where you'll land Love is something we'll never understand Its the reason you stay up for hours Plucked petals, piles of flowers It's wondering if they love me, they love me not I shouldn't be suprised, it happens a lot It's this feeling that makes you want to scream Makes you do things to the extreme Why do I fall for the ones that don't feel the same To them, it's all a game Why do I put myselfs thought this pain Trying to find their faults, its all in vain I do all I can and hope that they'll notice In the end, we're all hopeless And I change myselfs so maybe they'll like me Loves never a guarantee The truth is falling in love is suicide Guess that makes us all suicidal People say it's a beautiful thing But it's the reason we all drown People say love makes you whole I just feel like I'm losing control And people say love is worth the wait But love doesn't seem all that great I just want my heart to stop racing And forget the true love I've been chasing I don't want to drown anymore

Another plus to writing it down immediately is that it leads to a flow of writing because you just thought of those lyrics, but if you let it sit, even if you remember it the writing won't flow that much and you probably won't add anything to it. Not to mention second thoughts that can make you think "those are bad lyrics" and then you won't write it which isn't good because you want to keep it

I am SO excited about this! I actually suggested that video idea (covering people's original songs) when you asked for suggestions a few weeks ago! I am so hyped. I'm definitely sending in music!

I've thought about songwriting, but never persued it. Now I might. I have old poems and unfinished stories. Poems are songs without music I have found. All writing is a piece of your heart. Thank you for giving us little pieces of your heart. ♥️

You have no idea the hope this video has given me. I recently started writing ideas for songs. I love singing but I want to sing songs that are mine. My best friend told me that I wouldn’t be able to do it because I didn’t know enough about music. This year she stopped being my friend and the pain of that drove me to start writing. Now because of your video I feel like maybe someday I’ll be able to make good music. Thank you 💙

I literally went to like this video multiple times because I forgot I had already done it. Thank you so much for making this video! I am just getting into songwriting, and I'm looking for tips on how to write, but also validation that I don't have to be perfect straight from the start. Especially coming from someone as thoroughly amazing as you, this is exactly what I needed to hear, and I cannot thank you enough! I will definitely be submitting my (let's be honest; only decent) song!

Thank you for the good songwriting advice, lock up your inner editor! Also, loved the reference to the puffin song at 4:32. :D

I don’t like writing songs but I do do poetry. If that makes sense. In Hebrew the word שיר (shir) is the same word for both a poem and a song and I find it beautiful. Thanks Malinda for getting me to write!

#5 was very helpful and eye-opening for me. I always want to portray exactly how I was feeling in the lyrics, but the idea of keeping some of those details for myself is very nice.

Nice video dear Malinda. Here is the newest of my Poems: Lying on this lively meadow I try to hug the earth Apologise for all the sorrow Mankind caused to her since birth I smell the plants Caress some ants Take a deep breath I shed a tear for all the deaths It is a peaceful moment here Where everything becomes so clear What is right and what is wrong Most of us know that for time long But living our lives not hugging earth Many forget that till they give birth To the next generation living their lives And hopefully teaching them How to hug our earth

I write orchestral music, but a lot of the same principles are important for this too. Whenever I improvise on the piano, I will try and record what I am playing, kind of like you writing down everything

Aces kid, you're in a roll! Seriously, most of that is a shade of what I've done. I was a musician. Bass guitarist, rhythm guitarist, bass, piano, some organ, trumpet, cornet. I'm a technician, one hand ruined incidentally, both ruined with time. I was a musician. Don't screw up what you love for what is "needed" by others or what you think you need.

Something to go with Less is More is that sometimes More is More (in a different context). Sometimes breaking rhythm a bit adds a different feel and emotion to the song, whether that be stretching the melody to fit an extended line, or completely changing the melody to fit the line better. Of course, this all varies on context and genre. I primarily play kinda Indie/Punk/Blues, so that's a fun way to add character to a song, but in a pop context that may end up sounding to choppy.

Thank you for sharing your story and advice! You are so talented and thoughtful. I have so many ideas, and I’ve been trying for years to turn them into songs, and I just finally started this summer! Still a bit stuck, but this helps so much. Everything you said really resonates with me, and I love the way you explained it! Best wishes! :)

As someone who really doesn't even know the basics of music theory and doesn't play any instruments as of yet, I can confirm that it doesn't stop you from making music. Most of the time it really is about playing random notes that sound nice and then suddenly you have a melody and a bass line and whoops the song is finished.
