Ice cream contains both sugar and fat. The mechanism that causes weight gain when excess ice cream is consumed is called the Randle Cycle. Generally I consider lack of correlation to disprove causation but your segment about ice cream seems to be the exception that proves the rule. Of course in a free population there are many confounders, which is why any epidemiological study should be heavily discounted until other methods have been employed to prove or disprove the claim. In our house, ice cream is consumed at a steady rate, but purchases are made when ice cream is sold at a discount and put into storage until consumption. Since consumption is not tied to sales, there is no reason to conclude weight gain should be tied to sales, either.

Thanks for this video. I wish more people would approach things in a more scientific approach like this, using logic and reason. Many lean into "scientific studies" which may very well be biased or even fraudulent without a second glance, and swallow the data whole with blind belief. Some will even be ostracized from the community for suggesting another theory. Its as if the spirit of free inquiry has been crushed by the current dogma of our current trend of "science". We are in a very dangerous age where our very own sources of "information" are under control by different "groups" pushing their own agenda. We have turned into a society were we dont look for confirmation of facts, but affirmation of our own beliefs. Especially in politics. I feel that most people on earth go no further than the news, and even that may only read a headline. But its difficult in an age where, say someone goes to "wikipedia" for their "facts" and not realize anybody can go onto any wikipedia page and edit it with their own words. They have crowdsourced information and its frightening.

According to this brief video can we claim that ice cream causes people to gain weight?
@DecisionSkills3 жыл бұрын
While there is a correlation between ice cream and weight gain, it does not equal causation. Think of it a different way. If a person ate 500 calories of ice cream each day and nothing else they would lose weight. Ice cream is not the cause, it is the restricted number of calories causing the weight loss. The reverse holds true for weight gain.

Which TED talk? Maybe they used my material. Of course I wouldn’t care, because the educational topic of correlation vs causation has been taught for decades in schools all around the world. But I would be curious if a TED talk was using the same theme and examples I used.
