Thank you for sharing the knowledge Ross. I’ve been subscribed to your channel for over a year now, and I’ve learned quite a bit. I joined OurFigs forum last November…had no idea that was you from the forum…lol…you were one of the first to welcome me…your hair threw me off. I posted pics…Fig ID Help…still not sure what I have. However, I do believe that I have a better chance of figuring it out by keeping tuned in to the info you share, and researching for myself. Thank you Ross.

Hey Ross, I discovered a fig tree on a hike a little more than a year ago. It was way beyond the end of the hike, I kept going past the huge rocks that most people can't climb over, and followed the creek. I went for a few more miles and ended up finding a massive fig tree bearing hundreds of figs. They were green on the outside when ripe, and when I cut one open for a video it burst out with a red jelly on the inside. It was definitely not planted by anyone because it was growing out of massive rocks. But its roots were deep enough to feed from the stream. It's one of the best figs I've ever had so I went to propagate it yesterday. Can I name it a new variety and what is the process?

You can. I'd love to see photos of the tree and fruits if you've got them.

This was a great video! You should update it to focus more on what resources to use to learn fig identification. As great as this was you don’t actually tell us how to learn fig ID skills. As a beginner I just want to be able to differentiate between the commonly encountered figs here in the US. Thanks for all your great help & information.

Very informative video Ross, thank you. Something I've been curious about for a while now and also think would make a good subject for a future video, is what makes a "Sugar" fig. Is it level of sweetness, or a certain flavor, or just lack of "berry" flavor? Also read somewhere that sugar figs are so called because they have a high enough sugar content to dry and preserve well. Please let us know what you think.

iso would you say that it seems that the tree is evolving into something different depending on location.minerals, and climate .. and if so could this also be why we are see cdD reveres and mutante
@RossRaddi
@RossRaddi 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, but that's a little different, Troy. Those are mutations not adaptations. Don't ask me for the science, lol.

Thanks, good Stuff here…Any chance we can hire you (in Philly too) to identify my 15+ ft. Fig tree & investigate why this year, its fruit is not ripe yet. The tree is healthy & u know the weather we’ve had. So I’m confused why this year the fruit’s still smallish & hasn’t ripened yet. BTW: in mid-June exactly 4 figs were ripe & tasted great. But zilch after that.

Can we train an AI to identify figs? If we get a really well-trained AI it might outperform human ID attempts and be accessible to everyone.

I grow mushrooms. ( and now figs ) I take the strongest and biggest mushroom and will use the spores or a piece of the mushroom to grow out on an agar plate. Usually both. If I grow out the spores there could be hundreds of phenotypes of that mushroom which will have slightly different characteristics. Even though it’s from that mushroom. If I use the mushroom, it’s like doing a cutting. It will be a clone. I would guess it works the same way with seeds. A Meyer lemon tree can only be probated from another Meyer lemon plant. Plant the seed and it will slightly different. My thought would be take a fig from one extreme location, grow in another and eventually it will adapt. With adaption comes change.

ross do u think that patterns in leaf shapes can change with climate? my celeste from jfe dont look like that. thay are more fingerlike.
@RossRaddi
@RossRaddi 6 жыл бұрын
Leaf shape changes due to vigor. That's the only reason I can see. People have said it's because of maturity, but that's because the vigor changes as the plant gets older.

I'll watch the whole video as I'm interested in figs on a deeper level like this. But 10 minutes in and all you've reinforced is the essential uselessness of even watching this video in the first place. It seems I'd only have a snowball's chance in hell of identifying any fig variety, even if I had a doctorate in fig identification. So at least 1/5 of this video (so far) is spent not actually helping us identify any fig and their specific traits.
