Romance, to me, is being there for someone no matter what...showing them they're the only one you want, even when they feel the most unlovable. It's not infatuation, or something you do over infatuation. It's something that persists. The way you hold someone; the way you look at them like they're the only thing you see. And gifts CAN convey romance, if it's done in the right way. It's not about impressing them; it doesn't have to be some grand display (unless you want to.) It's...random gifts, even after being together for 10 years. It can be flowers. It can be cards. Any small thing, just doing something nice because you want to. Because you love them. It can be opening the door for someone, or sending a random text in the middle of the day to say you're thinking about them. It's...small things (or big things, if that's your style, but not necessary) to show someone is important to you. Romance can be anything if it's done in a way to show your partner you love them; it's all the things you do to express that. Not infatuation. Real love.

The Five Love Languages you discussed is a series of books & a theory by Gary Chapman. It is an excellent tool for every couple and individual. It is so important to be able to first understand how you experience and express love; & second understand and adapt to how your significant other experiences and express love. I love the way you guys define and talk about expressing romance. to me that's practice romance. The societal understanding of romance, the kinda of things you see in rom-coms is unrealistic and unsustainable. My husband and I will be married for 11 years next month & together 16.5. we went through The Five Love Languages at the beginning of our marriage and it set a great foundation and tone for knowing how to communicate love to each other and how to best communicate in general. Some of the most important things in any relationship is open & honest communication, compromise, and working at "fighting fairly" when there's an argument and disagreement. Because believe it or not, there are ways to resolve arguments that bring you closer together instead of teasing you apart. John Gottman's work in understanding the psychology of relationships and what makes for successful long term relationships is some of the best. His research has found that the most successful and longest lasting couples have a 5:1 ratio of positive: negative interactions.

i think love languages can make or break a relationship. you don't have to have the same, but you need to be aware of theirs and able to speak their language and they yours. and the other way, they need to also understand yours and you theirs.

Lets get serious here. Romance and sex go together. 150 million copies of 50 Shades of Grey can't be wrong. Your right about romance being a fundamental component of strong and beautiful relationship. Gifts are somewhat superficial, that are kinda of an aftereffect. Hey when the sex dies, so does the relationship. After sex it's momentum, obligations, convenience and momentum that keep things it going. Low maintenance = boring! You never fully know somebody. Innovation will keep the romance going. Sex is NEVER mentioned here!!!!!!!!!!!!

After having a rough time of it in my marriage I would relish a peaceful almost boring just hanging out without the all the "romance" relationship because at the end of the day it is more about how we get along when things are mundane or stressful. I joke but it is sort of true when I say a boring guy would be ok with me. I don't mean mind numbing boring but just calm.

it's important. just because a married couple or couple that's been together for decades, doesn't mean they don't need romance. even a simple thank you would suffice. people work too hard nowadays, they need a reminder what made them chose their significant other in the first place and their SO needs to know. keep the relationship fresh and alive.

I don't think there is definition on romance otherwise your partner will judge. If you take every moment being together as precious blessing, there's a romance around, even when not being together. If couple can find romance while changing diapers, they are solid and forever.

The idea of getting love letters sounds wonderful but when did he know he wanted to marry her because he took 3 years to finish the proposal. You would have figured by month 9 he would have been ready to pop the question. I think things that are romantic is if I am sick and the man I am with actually takes to the time to make sure I am ok and ask if there is anything I need or he would do things like make sure my car got an oil change or something like that. A hug here and there for no reason. I am pretty basic just pay a little attention. I don't need an expensive bouquet of flowers on Valentine's Day just a little TLC on a regular basis.

Making plans for the future whether it be planning for a trip together and how you can achieve or what you want to do achieve together in the future, I find romantic. I think I have really low standards because in my marriage it was always just getting through the day or month without any thought of the future. Living parallel lives is not what one should have in a relationship. It doesn't mean you have to be joined at the hip because I would find that suffocating but there has to be something that the two people in the relationship like to do together on a regular basis. I am sounding like a debbie downer so I am going to stop commenting.

...so if Romeo changed his mind, he would change it to spell "Will you breakup with me?" Romance is important, but don't over do it, because you can't keep it up at the dating level after you get married and have kids... it is harder, and you don't want the wife to get ticked because you can't keep that level of romance going.

I don't think the romantic type of love is special. And I am started to think that the romantic type of love isn't real. I mean about more than half of romantic couples either break up with each other or divorce each other, while most platonic best friends remain friends until death. Also, most people are pretty much comfortable enough to be naked around someone and have sex with someone that they have no romantic feelings towards. So sex isn't really a thing about romance. I think that having a platonic best friend is a lot better than having a romantic partner or spouse is. Having someone who's like a sibling to you is a lot better than having a romantic partner is. Also, you would more likely be much closer to a person who's like a brother or sister to you than you would be with a partner or spouse. People tend to fight with their partner or spouse a lot more than they do with a platonic best friend, and you never fight with your best friend the way you fight with your partner or spouse. Partners and spouses are just temporary. If you break up or divorce them, it's hard to go back to them. With your platonic best friend, you're going to make things work, because they are your best friend, they are your go to partner. It's always easier to make amends with them than it is with a romantic partner or spouse. Also, there are a lot of toxic romantic relationships, while there isn't that many toxic platonic relationships. Like an example is that abuse happens a lot in romantic relationships, while abuse is rare in platonic relationships. So there is a lot of abusive romantic relationships, while there is isn't that many abusive platonic relationships. Why do you think abusive romantic relationships have a term for them called "domestic violence", while abusive platonic relationships don't have a term for them? It's because abuse in platonic relationships are very rare, while abuse in romantic relationships happens a lot. And also, a lot of people cheat on their romantic partners with someone else, while most people won't do stuff like that with their platonic best friends.
@icysnow57cold64
@icysnow57cold64 3 жыл бұрын
Also, I heard that most people can live a life without romance and can still be happy. But most of the time, if someone doesn't have any platonic friends in their life, it can effect them really bad mentally; much worse than living a life without a romantic partner. In today's world, less people are dating and getting married now, and they seem to be more happy being single rather than being in romantic relationship with someone. Also, you're going to have a much deeper spoken understanding and connection with your best friend than you are with a romantic partner or spouse. So those are other reasons why romantic love isn't real or special, while platonic love is. And also, it seems that fathers usually hate it whenever their daughter gets a boyfriend (even if the boyfriend is a good guy), and it seems that they often hate the idea of their daughter dating, and many fathers seem against the idea of their daughters dating. There are even shirts made for daughters that say "I'M NOT ALLOWED TO EVER DATE" and shirts made for fathers that say "DADS AGAINST DAUGHTERS DATING". Brothers also tend to act the same way that fathers do whenever their sister gets a boyfriend (even if the boyfriend is a good guy). It seems brothers (like fathers) hate the idea of their sisters dating. So it seems that most fathers don't ever want their daughters to find love and be in a romantic relationship with someone, and it also seems that most brothers don't ever want their sisters to find love and be in a romantic relationship with someone. So those could also be other reasons why the concept of romantic relationships isn't a good thing because of how protective fathers and brothers tend to be whenever their daughter or sister dates someone.

Also, here are 13 reasons why your best friend is more important than your romantic partner or spouse is: 1. Your best friend has seen you at your worst and they still love you. They have no need to see you looking pretty or together all the time. You could show up in curlers with the biggest pimple ever and they’d still accept you. 2. Your best friend has probably been around longer than your partner. They are reliable, loyal and entrenched in your life. 3. You don’t necessarily have more fun with your best friend but it’s a different kind of fun. It feels more relaxed and honest. 4. You don’t have to impress your best friend. You can be yourself. 5. Your best friend will drop everything and come rescue you and you’d do the same for them. 6. Your best friend will understand you and not judge you. You talk to them and feel totally understood for once in this big, bad world. 7. Your best friend has probably known you when you were a grungy, gross middle schooler or when you puked all over yourself freshman year. They’ve known you through every phase of your life. 8. You’ve always been sure about your best friend, but you sometimes doubt if your partner is really “the one.” 9. You never fight with your best friend the way you fight with your partner. 10. Your best friend is there for you after every break up and through every awful ex. They will put you back together when you’re hurt. 11. You know if things get tough you and your best friend can run off to Mexico and go on the run. 12. There’s nothing sexual going on so you can cuddle up and watch TV together for hours and there’s no pressure to do anything but that. 13. Your best friend has probably done more for you in life, in terms of favors and life experience, than your partner has. You should show them more appreciation.

Sufkopp82 sorry i sounded a little snarky in that last post. I am going to blame it on the 3 hours of sleep I got. In my case my ex had issues mostly not of his making. He grew up under a dictator and bad stuff happened. He didn't believe in therapy so he just wasn't able to fully give of his time and energy. I have to say when he got laid off at the beginning of the recession after 20 years of employment, he didn't miss a beat. He left a job on a Friday and start working at the new one on a Monday. Didn't even have time for the unemployment to kick in. And he loves his daughter dearly. I can say nice things because the anger has almost dissipated.
