Another thing to note is that franchises in IPL don't care about lobbying and connections of power as much as state or national boards. The teams function on a budget so it is very crucial to always find hidden gems for cheap. That is why they have pan nation scouting, even picking players that have played very little domestic cricket. You don't have to brown nose someone for opportunity in this league.

The very short version: 1. One innings in T20 lasts until you lose 10 wickets or play 120 balls (20 6-ball "overs"*, hence the name T20). Each team plays one inning. 2. One innings in an ODI lasts until you lose 10 wickets or play 300 balls (50 6-ball "overs"). Each team plays one inning. Longer innings = longer games. 3. Both teams play two innings in a test match. There's no ball limit on an innings, but the match ends in a draw if no one wins by the end of five days of cricket. *Each over consists of 6 balls, bowled by one player. The same player cannot bowl two consecutive overs. There are 2 batsmen on the field at any time and they rotate strike at the end of each over.

One correction: Sachin was not from a "wealthy" upper caste family. His father had four children, was a salaried employee (a college professor, teaching Marathi literature, not exactly a STEM subject). His mother was an insurance agent (again, not exactly a very high earning vocation in India). Secondly, "caste" wasn't a consideration for team selection, so Sachin wasn't a product of casteist favoritism. Case in point: Sachin's classmate, Vinod Kambli, was from a so called lower caste family, but found a place in the Indian team anyway. He couldn't hold on to that spot due to injuries and a drinking (and discipline) problem.
@photosynth359 Жыл бұрын
The general description is very ignorant though to the point of a lie to build false narrative especially because "upper" and "lower" caste is not a set thing, you can pretty much change the definition as you want as he seems to be doing. Also caste is not really a hierarchy, this is just western projection; it gets so tiring with these ignorant people trying to be social justice warriors.

Great summary of the importance of India’s role, but completely glossed over the importance of the Packer led revolution for ODIs and also the early success of the Big Bash League for T20. There’s actually a lot about Australia this gets wrong - including the claim “Australians started to prefer Aussie Rules”, which again just isn’t right. Football in Australia is massively bifurcated across two halves of the country, with Aussie Rules being the main sport in one half of the country whilst the NRL (Rugby League) dominates the other half. But importantly BOTH are played in the winter and DON’T compete with Cricket, which remains the only sport that is popular in the entire country.

Cricket is certainly a sport for everyone now. I used to teach overseas for quite a few years. Every park in Delhi is an impromptu cricket pitch. In the middle east, every construction site, on the weekends, becomes an impromptu cricket pitch. I brought a cricket set back to the US and on nice days, I take my students to our soccer field and play. I would love for the NCAA to recognize cricket.

There is an important missing bit of information in the intro. Cricket did not go from 5 day tests to t20s. Australia, through businessman Kerry Packer, started the One Day Cricket era in the 1970s, where both teams batted for a maximum of 50 overs each, played over a day. This revolutionized cricket, and the first cricket World Cup was played in this format every 4 years until the present day. Australia recently won it's 6th ODI World Cup, the most by far (West Indies and India have 2 each).

Also, the first team did not include only upper "caste" people, they were upper "class" which generally meant that they were either very wealthy or sponsored by some wealthy person/ english person or coming from princely royalty who had access to the coloniser and kit. Sachin Tendulkar comes from a middle class family according to Indian standards, according to international ones his family was poor and he was from an "upper" caste but not upper "class", that is with a lot of wealth or connections, there is a clear difference. Not all upper "class" people are upper "caste" or vice versa. This is a misnomer and misinformation in the western world.

7:59 What is this obsession with the 'caste system' in the west? It's one of those stereotypes about Indians and Hindus which is just so absurd and ridiculous in itself. To claim that cricket is still dominated by upper castes and that lower castes have a low representation is an evidence for the prevalence of the 'caste system' is just laughable. Cricketers, or any other sport players in India for that sake, are selected on the basis of their merit, and not their caste. Therefore the question of over or under-representation is just a matter of coincidence, because we value 'equality of opportunity', and not 'equality of outcome'. And frankly nobody even cares about it other than bheemtas, a section of leftists and commies and of course, the western media which loves to patronize India on every single freakin issue.

What a phenomenal video. Very informative. Though, I’d like to add one point with the rise of cricket 🏏, there was the rise of BCCI. The Indian cricket board has its own rags to riches story, starting with the ODI World Cup and ending with IPL. At first, the board was actually paying for broadcasting of test matches, and even some ODI matches. Now, they sold the rights to IPL for ₹23 crores. And India will probably win the World Cup too.

@DeftPol6 ай бұрын
Yeah, he completely glossed over the role of Australia and how the development of the sport in Aus wasn’t based on class like it was in England - indeed, he effectively to the US political lens and collapsed all of those politics into a simplistic category of it being “run by white men” in Australia, which isn’t a particularly useful (or actually accurate).
@Wayne.J5 ай бұрын
100%, didn't suit his narrative. Australia/Packer's overhaul of cricket, both test and ODIs made it possible to watch cricket on TV and help promote it to the masses. Ch9 coverage revolutionised how sports were broadcasts, whether new scores, gadgets. This all helped other broadcasters around the world improve their standards. This in turn got more people to watch the game. T20 is just the latest vehicle in a game that is still evolving. IPL is beast that will eventually eat itself through corruption and exclusion of better international players. It's broadcast must already tow the party line and eventually if it creates a furore, either politically or a prominent player taking a stand in the public arena, things will turn very quickly because of heavy handed nature of how BCCI is run. PS: the 1st country to permit t20 comp and teams to have the best open market, limited restrictions will dominate the field and have best TV ratings/market and monies

Chief, the point is that people from higher castes have historically enjoyed greater social/economic benefits from their social hierarchy, people from upper classes/castes have had the time and money to dedicate to being a full time sportsperson as opposed to those from lower castes/economic backgrounds. Sure the caste based discrimination might not be as intense today in most parts of the country but centuries of discrimination still have a large impact in the inequality of our society.
