India's Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exams, sat by young men and women who want to join the country’s vast civil service, are seen as one of the toughest tests in the world.
A million candidates apply to appear in the gruelling three-stage exam every year, with less than 1% making it to the second stage.
While preparing for the UPSC, Gamini Singla stayed away from friends, did not go on vacations and avoided family meetings and celebrations for nearly three years.

I really enjoy Tibbee's videos on Indian exams. It's sad that Indian exams are structured around eliminating people as the number of places at universities is so low, rather than using the exam to establish which students are capable of furthering their studies at a university level. I'm Australian, so I have a soft spot for Indians. We've always played cricket against each other and been friends. I just wish they'd abolish this archaic style of testing that was introduced during colonial times in favour of how examinations are carried out in Western nations now. India has so much potential, one day it will be a superpower, but its young people always move overseas - partly because these types of exams are very bad at teaching young people how to think as opposed to simply memorising text books.

You are right. Students in India spend years just for preparing for these exams. It takes away the creative energy eventually which they could use to build a product or a company, per say. To those fighting over JEE and NEET, not everyone is after a career in applied sciences. Engineering and Medicine are both applied sciences. Many also aspire to pursue a career in pure sciences such as physics, chemistry and biology and become a scientist. But, there's hardly any zeal and environment for scientific research in this country.

Facilities are bad in this country for research. My father emigrated to USA for this reason, he came back again and he often tells the difference in environment. In other countries people will work together so that both benefit here people will prevent you from succeeding even if it harms them more. So much bureaucracy and corruption in this country is not conducive to research.

India's UPSC Civil Service examination is one of the world's toughest exam and it is also India's oldest competitive exam. Perseverance, Patience, Dedication, Smart work plus Hard work are the three essential elements for cracking this prestigious examination. I, as a UPSC Aspirant, also learnt, during my course of UPSC preparation, that in life sometimes we have to sacrifice what we love the most in order to achieve big things. UPSC exam is so tough because after selection that person is going to administer world's largest and most complex democratic country.

@Richa Sarmah Any credible report to prove your claims ? I know you won't have any to show. We have several examples where an aspirant who failed to crack even JEE Mains begged under top 10 ranks in UPSC one such is Srushti Jayant Deshmukh. I haven't ever encountered any IITian indulging in such discussions. They are hardly free. Not have I seen an IAS UPSC aspirant doing badmouthing in comment sections. Don't tell me the fictious tales of your friends coz the success rate if Engineers is highest in UPSC, even they are from a 3-tier college. Erudera in his recent survey has concluded that the toughest Exam of the world is GAOKAO from China, and JEE ADVANCED is second most toughest followed by UPSC. Also let me remind you that an ENGINEER is capable of making a successful transition in any field be it Medical, Law, Civil Services etc etc while the students of other fields won't be able to clear the exams of 1sem Computer Science engineering.

Everyone thinks people move abroad for money. What no one knows is that THIS is the primary reason why parents move abroad - to let their children breathe and live a normal life and have a career where years are not spent preparing for exams. I’m one of them.

So true! Finally a sane voice. We too moved to a different country recently & I can see how my daughter is finally able to breathe. There’s no unnecessary pressure. She’s allowed to redo her tests, if she wants or if her scores aren’t satisfactory, teachers & students share a camaraderie that she was surprised to see, because in India, teachers had no time to know their students, as they had a schedule to keep up with, like finishing the portions etc. my daughter feels seen & heard because she experienced some form of discrimination & favouritism while studying in India, she was not recognised for the talents she had, instead she was expected to have the talents , other kids had. The kids in India are always judged based on their academic performance, there is absolutely no regard for their personality or talent. Their innocent questions are ridiculed, their efforts are snubbed, unless you’re a class topper. I can’t help but think about all those children with some kind of learning disabilities, my heart breaks for them. Thanks to all the online studies during covid, I got to see first hand, how toxic the school environment in India is!

I have also prepared for this exam and even appeared once. It is not easy for sure, but also not that difficult. What actually makes it hard is not really its design/pattern, but rather the competition and the stakes involved. Civil services attract many young Indians for many reasons, and because there are so few places every year and so many aspirants, the competition is unbearable. Also, because all these candidates dedicate the prime of their youth to this exam preparation, with no gains in case of failure, the stakes are very high too. These two factors make the whole process extremely stressful and succeeding in the exam difficult. In the end, if you ask me, it is not really worth it.

Ironically, IAS exam isn't as difficult compared to other exams like NEET or IIT JEE. But IAS obviously has fewer seats and thus the intense competition for the limited ones. Edit: Many people commenting about the vastness of the syllabus is exactly my point. Why does a public servant require such extensive knowledge is history/ politics or another subject? No other developed country requires its public servants to do so. IAS exam system is outdated.

Considering the difficulty level of questions UPSC is not as difficult as IIT , ISI, PMT etc. However, the success rate is low because of the lower number of seats and is extremely subjective - prelims are subject to the subjects you choose, as its impossible to normalise difficulty level across different subjects. The interviews are even more subjective because they can ask anything under the sky and there is no blueprint of selection criteria there. Not to mention reservations and other forms of affirmative actions.
