I'm fairly sure that the reason we couldn't escape 4546B with the Seamoth is that it's not designed to escape a planet's gravity from the surface. It cannot fly. Presumably it would be launched from a larger ship already in orbit or in space, and could be used to travel between ships or space stations, or to explore smaller bodies such as meteors which have minimal gravity.

A few notes: 0:50 Yes, the seamoth's engine wouldn't produce nearly enough thrust for flight water and air propellers are very different, one can spin pretty slowly because water is dense, the other needs to spin hella fast to make meaningful thrust. It also lack any decent lifting surface. for space, i'd imagine you could adapt it to work like an ion thruster or something... in orbit, you really don't need a lot of thrust, very little actually, the space shuttle's orbital maneuvering system had a total thrust in a vacuum of around 50 kN. that's very little for something as heavy as that orbiter. yet, it was enough to perform orbital insertion (take too long on that and you'll fall back to the atmosphere and die) and ion engines have abysmal thrust, it would be impossible to perform orbital insertion with that propulsion system. space travel is about precise, well-timed velocity changes, not thrust/acceleration (unless you're landing somewhere without atmosphere, doing an orbital insertion, or going anywhere that requires a lot of deltaV, such as from low earth orbit to lunar encounter, as that would make it a bit of a hassle with really tiny accelerations) 2:16 The only speed limit in space is the speed of light, besides that there's no such thing as "space top speed" so, instead of top speed you'll have your total deltaV which comes from how much fuel you have and how efficient your engine is. anyways, cool video, i liked the edition. hope you learned something new from this comment
@epicswordmewz7007
@epicswordmewz7007 Жыл бұрын
Propellers only work when they have a medium to push backwards. The seamoth is stated to be a sea and space vehicle, so it has to have some form of future electric propulsion system since it only ever needs to be charged and doesn't need xenon refills like an ion engine. It still wouldn't realistically be able to fly though, as it doesn't have any airfoils so it can't fly like an airplane, so it definitely couldn't take off from 4546b on its own.

An extra small bite size Subnautica lore video for you all today on Subnautica's Seamoth! What do you think of this shorter video format compared to my usually longer content? Edit: It turns out I got my figures wrong on the Seamoths dimensions. Its 3m long, 1.5m wide and a 1m tall rather than 3m tall, 1.5m long and 1m wide as said in the video, looks like I need to brush up on how I read my dimensions!! To me it makes complete sense that the Seamoth can’t “Hover” or exit the water. Very little actual propulsion is needed when you’re actually in space to move around, similar to underwater. Meanwhile above water you have to fight the planets gravitational pull to move upwards.

Well, the Titan rocket can reach the "nearest jump gate" fairly promptly, so presumably that isn't all that far away Of course the Titan's engines put out a helluva lot more thrust than the Seamoth's, so it likely accelerates a lot faster.

Seamoth is fast in space and water enviroments. But what about the prawn suit? By using the prawn suit grappling arm, you can launch yourself. (From my personal experience) it can launch you to up to 30 units of speed according to the game's sidebar thing. Just get a grappling arm, aim it to the ground, and shoot, wait for it to stick, and when you start hearing the prawn suit legs stomp really fast, hold spacebar and you go FLYING.

See, the reason that the Seamoth cannot travel outside a vacuum space like water or space itself is because of that the small thrusters are simply not strong enough, gravity is stronger while you get closer and closer to most of the mass. And as an example of that i got this: if i was closer to the center of the earth gravity would actually not be as strong because of the fact that more mas would be above me than below me, meaning itd try to pull me up as well as down. While on the surface on the planet the mass would be below me and gravity would pull me downwards instead of 2 different directions. also air is being pulled down because of gravity too. which builds up atmosphere. with that said, the atmosphere tries to pull the object downwards too, resulting in stronger gravity. With all that said, the thrusters has no use what so ever outside the vacuum of space or the vacuum of water.

I think you must have missed the lore PDA's that describes how the Seamoth's and PRAWN suits were intended to be utilized in the construction of Alterra Phase-Gates for long distance travel. That's why the Aurora was making a slingshot maneuver around a world that was lesser known. I personally believe the Seamoth's thrusters would be insanely overpowered in space. It can already go fast underwater, but without any resistances in a pure weightless vacuum of space we'd be capable of traveling hundreds of meters per second. However, escaping the gravity of a planet is much harder than moving through space or water; that's why we have the Aurora.

I appreciate the labor of love updates and stuff but man I was already sad enough that was patched in below zero, I assume they just copied over all the seaglide code which changed the controls too. It was just such a fun glitch thats almost impossible to have happen by accident and damage your play through, and it was nice for speedruns. Trade power use and infinite power with swim charge for super speed. And trade the safety and O2 of a vehicle for super speed. Honestly isnt even that unbalanced haha

Or... Because it's for sea and space, not air. Air and space aren't the same. I don't get how everyone is missing the gravity factor. It floats in water because it's made to be buoyant enough. It glides through space because there's nothing pulling it down. But in the air, gravity is constantly pulling at it. The ISS can't operate in the lower atmosphere and planes can't work in space, because of the difference in gravity and air resistance between the two environments.

According to the in game data logs its 3m x 1.5m x 1m! So yep, turns out its a little bigger than you might think! Thanks for watching Ross :)

@@iAletho Wouldn't that mean it's 3m long, 1.5m wide and a meter tall? That makes a bit more sense with the in-game vehicle and the dimensions are also usually listed in that order.

Its top speed in space wouldnt really be a top speed. As long as it has fuel it can go faster relative to its environment, the issue is making sure you have enough energy to slow down too, and as for why we didnt use the seamoth to fly: even if it had little rocket engines strapped to it escaping a planets gravity when the planet has an atmosphere is nightmarishly difficult to achieve in anything except a rocket specifically designed for it. Maybe the seamoth could eventually get escape velocity on a small atmosphereless moon but never 4546b

Why wouldn't it? The Seamoth can withstand many atmospheres of pressure. Space has no atmosphere so it'll be fine.

@@-AWEJOKER I just thought it was logical you could use it in space since it would have to be sealed up tight underwater. And space requires tight sealing of your ship so...

The movement trick, which FPS players call "strafe-running" when doing it on two axes, is more precisely called bichording. Doing it on three axes is called "trichording," and the Descent players have been doing that since forever. The speed on the Pyro GX (Descent) is the same on all axes, meaning the trichording speed is a clean 1.71 times normal speed.

Speed limit in space? Reaching Escape velocity in a seamoth or travelling through air? Please, read your script and think it through before you say something. Other than that, decent video.
@SaadTheGlad

I'm confused about your logic here, a seamoth is capable of traversing space because the gravity is extremely low there, that doesn't correlate to it being able to escape a planet's orbit

The seamoth is NOT three metres tall. Look at the size of the seat. See how big you are next to it. If the seamoth is three metres tall, humans in the future are taller.

Pretty sure a vehicle that can move at 50kmh in space does not have the necessary thrust to fly around in gravity that’s similar to earths. So that explains it pretty simply? Good video otherwise
