I have learned a few decades ago that the only reliable source of transmission line and antenna information if from broadcast engineers (and Walt Maxwell). :-) I am so glad that a man of your background and experience is producing these high quality videos. Thanks a million, Russ !!!!!!! 73

Nice to get a Update on how thing like the IOT's Work in Transmitters..

Excellent video. Many years ago I help maintain a RCA TTU-30 which used klystrons. We called them tea-kettles because most of their input power was spend boiling water for the heat exchanger. RF was a minor byproduct- about 20% efficiency on a good day. Little wonder so many Us went bankrupt in those days. I'm retired now but good to know that UHF transmitter technology has improved since then.

Love these kind of instructional/explanatory videos. Thanks

Great video! I have nothing to do with RF, but this kind of stuff is very intresting and understandable!

Hi Russ, from 0:54 to 1:07, the dual cabinet IOT shown is a Larcan Landmark used by KRON 4 in San Francisco. It is still on air until the Repack retires it by 2020 as planned. Just thought you may be interested to know.

The first television broadcast in North America was made using an IOT. That was quite a bold move on the part of RCA because early IOTs were much more prone to internal arcing.

Why is the plate so deep? Is it to avoid secondary electron emissions from interacting with the modulated drift electrons at the primary output cavity?

More surface area for liquid cooling.

Is there an FM broadcast IOT? Maybe it is larger for a lower frequency. Or just use triodes.
@nakayle7 жыл бұрын
At FM frequencies conventional tubes are cheaper and easier to use.
@SuperBorg17 жыл бұрын
And also the FM ERP is limited to 100,000 watts (50K transmitter into 4 bays) so a 500,000 watt output IOT is overkill.
@romualdolintag93306 жыл бұрын
IOT's are primarily used for UHF band. Since FM is on VHF, an IOT is not suitable.

@@SuperBorg1someone has probably made a CB linear from one.

Why does that plane keep bombing your transmitter?

I was tempted to comment something like that.

I thought the IOT was mounted that way so the electrons fell down faster. hurdy durrrrrrrrrr

I think Idle is not spelled "Idel". Nice video though.
