We’re overthinking this. Jake has a family, and children, obviously after Come Along With Me, he won’t always go on adventures. I think that Jake was alive during the events of Obsidian and just not present, he could've been with Lady or just bonding more with his pups. Finn could've gotten the tattoo to show how strong the bond between Finn and Jake is. Jake could've died when Finn was in his 50s or 60s. Anyway, I am super excited for this new adventure time show, can't wait for it!

You know it could also be that Jake never died. We just assumed he did because of the tattoo Finn had. They never outright confirmed that Jake is dead. And since he's half shape shifter, Jake probably lived a long life before dying sometime before Finn. Edit: So after seeing Fionna and Cake episode 2, it appears that Jake has in fact died before the show so the Jake in the trailer is most likely an alternate Jake. I'm still holding out hope that Adventure Time does the usual subverting your expectations and have him alive and do something like anytime he wasn't present he was just somewhere else. But as of right now, I sadly concur that Jake the Dog, best friend of Finn the Human, has passed. So long old buddy 😪😢😭.

Don't forget! There's been multiple times in the show, Finn and Jake have been shown to have been alive FARRR in the future. For example, in dungeon train, we could see them alive in the train FARRR in the future, when Finn peered into the orb, they were both extremely old still in the dungeon and they were both still inside the train. I'm pretty sure there was another episode that showed them far into the future however I don't remember other examples

Finn saw old Jake when he looked into the orb on the dungeon train because it was a future in which they never leave the train, Finn just keep going around gathering stronger and stronger equipment, until nothing on the train can even pose a threat to them, therefore letting them grow old in an extremely safe environment. Meanwhile, the real world isn't easy like in the dungeon train, Lich, GOLB, Comets can easily make anyone life worse just by being near them. And haven't you consider that the only future that the orb predicted already got evaporated just because Finn and Jake leaving the train? So no, i don't think you can use that when talking about how Jake could've survived.

The alternate version of finn becomes the finn sword/fern. So maybe if they wake up prismo, he'll become Jake again? That could be how they bring him back

Finn is definitely older in Obsidian than he is in this scene, possibly in Fionna and Cake as a whole. I don't think that rules out the possibility of it being an alternate version, but as we saw in Together Again he shrinks back down as he gets older. I'm sure we'll find out more in the coming episodes

In my theory, since Jake is actually a magic dog, they probably wanted to show Jake still with Finn but in a alternate universe in Fiona and cakes world, cause dogs do live long differently by their age even though they would be deceased in their final day. However in distant lands special after Jake did died there isn’t any living synapses in his body in order to control his growth that’s why Finn also joined to reunite with him in the afterlife to be reincarnated in a new form.
