I visited AkzoNobel to learn more about how paint is made. Their MASSIVE site in Ashington, UK, is designed to be the most advanced, most sustainable paint factory IN THE WORLD, and it was a fantastic experience spending the day with them as they showed me how they make lots and lots AND LOTS of paint.

Structure and Properties of Matter

Engineering Design
- K-2-ETS1-1. Ask questions, make observations, and gather information about a situation people want to change to define a simple problem that can be solved through the development of a new or improved object or tool.
Energy
- 4-PS3-2. Make observations to provide evidence that energy can be transferred from place to place by sound, light, heat, and electric currents.
- 4-ESS3-1. Obtain and combine information to describe that energy and fuels are derived from natural resources and that their uses affect the environment.
- 5-PS1-4. Conduct an investigation to determine whether the mixing of two or more substances results in new substances.
- 3-5-ETS1-1. Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost.
Literacy
- RI.4.3 Explain events, procedures, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text, including what happened and why, based on specific information in the text
