Subramaniam asked for a review beforehand, but the referee couldn't hear that...afterwards, he said she was too late to ask for a review...I think that would've stayed as no let but I'm definitely not happy about what the referee did there

Yeah, this same situation has come up other times. I've also seen players get away with asking for a review rashly, having the ref not hear it, and then thinking better of it.
