Israel has at times done incursions in Syria but they've been limited in scope, and very quick in, out, operations. With the collapse of the Syria government, and no official military, they can now do a large scale attack, and will have the benefit of being able to do it with a lot more stealth. Iran had been working with Assad, and propping him up, with Assad on side the Syrian air force could slow the Israeli approach, and provide warning of any incoming attack. Allowing Iran time to Scrabble it's fighter jets, and have all its defenses on high alert. Currently they will not have that same luxury, which has gifted Israel the best opportunity they've ever had to make a move on Iran. Even then it would still be a very risky move, one Israel cannot do alone. Iran ain't Hamas, who are defenseless or Hezbollah who are limited in operational capabilities. Iran is a much bigger fish, with properly trained personnel, strategic defense positions in place, anti missile defense systems, with an air force and potentially a nuclear arsenal. To beat Iran, Israel will have to play dirty, try stoking up tensions within the country to destabilise the nation, use agents to infiltrate the hierarchy and military, and get their bully dogs USA and NATO to ride out with them.

@@amirdiabe Good analysis. There are also the pesky Russians with their S400 radars, but that may (hopefully) likely change soon too in Israel's favour. @@moooo1743 If I had a Euro for every time I've come across this false dichotomy being utterred. There is, of course, no need for a full scale land invsation, unless regime change is on the table. It is entirely possible to take out Iran's nuclear and other miilitary facilities by a combination of air power and a limited deployment of special ops troops. First take out all the air defences (already partially done by Israel), then create full area denial around the facilities in question preventing any ground forces from approaching to resupply or help defend the positions and then bring in the special opp teams to finish the job. Something even tells me that at least some of the staff on site won't even put up much of a fight when faced with such overwhelming power. We all just witnessed how the Assad regime's army crumbled. True, the IRGC is a more loyal, ideological and formidable force, but disgruntled people are typically not in short supply when the same people have been in power for over 40 years. Israel started taking out Hezbollah sites in Lebanon and Iran tried to further supply the Hezbollah through Syria. Hezbollah sites in Syria became observable and Israel started bombing those, too. This in turn weakened Iran's ability to defend the Assad regime with their ground troops, which in combination with the Russian military resources stretched thin due to the Ukraine war and their invasion of the French sphere of influence in the sahel and the Turkish strengthening of anti-Assad, anti-Kurd militia in the Syrian north led to the fall of Assad. The beginning of an end to a regime isn't necessarily a good thing, even for Israel, or at least Israel's people. Netanyahu's focus on decapitation and destruction has meant there is no one to negotiate with, no stable influences that can direct people, just chaos. A weak enemy isn't less dangerous, they are just harder to find peace with since instead of 1 head of state you need to content with thousands of localized splinter groups. Now the Axis of Resistance is severely weakened - Hezbollah, Iraq, Yemen, and Iran itself are the only remaining members. Its missiles carry minimal deterrence value, because of mutually assurred destruction. This is what happened to Hezbollah. They had 150,000 rockets but didn't use them even when having come under attack because the result would be catastrophic for Hezbollah. Similarly, Iran is not down to launch a huge wave of ballistic missiles and prompt a devastating retaliation from their enemy. That leaves the nuclear option. But with Trump coming into office, he would definitely severely blockade or sanction Iran if he chose thay option. And the Iranian public, already simmering, would not be down to live like North Korea does. So now Khameni has to choose between facing fire from Netanyahu or his own people.

Working out a deal where Israel moves back to where it was a couple months ago is not going to be too hard. But I can't see a situation where Israel gives up the Golan Heights or Syria gives up its claims to it. The best peaceful option would be if Syria agrees to an indefinite lease of the Golan to Israel for a very large sum (billions of dollars a year). No clue though if either side would agree to that. Don't these equations determine the true friend and enemy of the oppressed Palestinian people?? While Yemen defends Palestine with all its might, Turkey guaranteed Israel’s security by occupying Syria by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham. If Erdogan had been a friend of the peoples of Syria, Lebanon and Palestine, he would not have paved the way for the Israeli attack on Syria in such a situation..What popular revolution??? As long as the US is closely allied with Israel, as the senior partner, approval of the US, either before or after the fact, will always be critical to Israel. Israel cannot operate with considering the US reaction. Also, saying that up until a few weeks ago Syria had one of the strongest air defense networks in the world is a joke.
