@tgroscoe Yeah, PGW actually gets alot of their glass from China (Xinyi Glass and Fuyao Group) and Mexico, now. Pilkington's bulk producer of glass is in Mexico, sometimes Crinamex, though they do have a Canadian plant. Crinamex also produces some Mopar parts. Carlite (Ford brand) is split between US- and Mexican-made glass.

Ha! 4:30 This guy is looking for scratches, chips and contamination, but NOT for deformations :) So that's why whole batch of windshields for my car from a renomed manufacturer were sooo distorted!

Yeah that is what I thought. The board went through the windshield but the rest of the windshield stayed intact. If that was not shatterproof glass the entire windshield would have been sent flying into the passenger cabin in large shards. The windshield was working as designed. If you do not like the term 'shatterproof' then perhaps you could think up a better name for it.

In the video, the autoclave is characterized as "a giant pressure cooker". Are windshields laminated under pressure, or vacuum? Or are there different processes? I would think a vacuum would be needed to remove any air bubbles - but then how would that help press the glass together if they are not vacuumed in bags?

I have a question, why do they put the film between 2 glass sheets ? the glass will still have place to fall off right ? why don't they take 1 glass sheet and put the limination on both sides of it ?? isn't that easier, cheaper and better cause the glass can't fall out ?

@ninjajesus81 Until windshield replacement and distribution is also replaced by robots, at least one human ultimately inspects every single piece of glass that goes into a vehicle. At least, that's the case with any reputable shop.

@shfbdfi1273 That windshield inspector guy probably won't have a job for very much longer. We'll just get cameras to feed the visual information into a computer and the computer can automatically detect any problems with the windshield. Better than a human could do, too.

'Shatterproof' as in it will not send two-foot shards of glass sailing through your body like the old tempered glass windshields did.
