It's not something bad. Having a larger GDP does not mean your country is better. Wow, Japan is now #4. But in a few years (in 2026-2030) India is expected to also surpass Japan's economy. That's surprising. After that happens, Japan will most likely remain as #5 largest economy for the foreseeable future, because the UK's economy has no chance of beating the Japanese.

@lenn939

It’s hardly surprising. India has more than 11 times the population of Japan and has been growing rapidly due to still being in the catch-up phase of economic development where developing countries can grow faster by being able to copy from developed countries instead of having to rely as much on innovation to grow like advanced economies such as Japan. It was only a matter of time before the most populous country in the world finally manages to produce more than countries that are an order of magnitude or more smaller than it. Unfortunately, that also means that the average Indian will still be way poorer than the average Japanese as their economic output is split amongst way more people.

@@zenden9 "complain of high cost of living and it's big reason why decline of Japanese tourist overseas" No that is not the reason. Japan's currency has become less valuable, which has reduced their international purchasing power. And that is partly due to the global decrease in export demand, i.e. people buying Japanese products and therefore stimulating demand for Yen to purchase those products. It is exactly the opposite for foreign currencies (especially reserve currencies like the Euro or Dollar). Japan does not have high cost of living - certainly not relatively compared to other developed countries. "Obviously most are not happy with current situation except for the super rich." Huh? there is no point to write this. I bet Japan's super rich are also not happy for their investments to be depreciating.
