Hiroshi Yoshimura is a legend. I remember hearing “Green” for the first time at stressful point in my life. It made everything else melt away, leaving a satisfying feeling of peace.

Kankyō Ongaku is sometimes translated as "environmental music" - music that was meant to fill a room and enhance the environment of the space you're in, or to become part of the room's environment. Kind of elevating the concept of background music.

Wow, I’ve been looking for this since 1984, when I loved the ambient electronica in the underground mall at Kyoto Station. I never heard it repeat.

Takashi Kokubo is a hero to me. I like listening to all kinds of electronic music so when i heard an ambient track without massive pads but gentle ear tickling elements like the Barcelona work, it was life changing. Everytime I have trouble sleeping i turn on his works and fall into another world.

Another phenomenal video, Tingo! Topics like these are what video essays are made for, and you hit it out of the park.

This is a stellar video! Kankyo Ongaku is a really a stellar music scene. Beautiful Albums left & right. One artist that deserves more attention is Satoshi Ashikawa. He owned a record store that imported records like Music For Airports and became an early place that helped bring this scene alive. He made one album called "Still Way" which is a gorgeous album!

Kankyo Ongaku was my introduction to this very niche subgenre, like many others I'm sure, and it was an amazing personal revolution in my life. I'd been a listener of ambient music for years prior to arriving at that compilation, but while listening to the music and reading that much of it was designed to be part of a room as much as a piece of furniture or wallpaper, it was such a profound concept to me. 2019 bled into 2020 and everything that came with that transition, and I found myself listening to albums such as Green, Music for Nine Post Cards and Still Way constantly. It was such an immersive, calming set of sounds. It changed the way I approach not only making music but examining what music is made for. This video was an amazingly concise and beautifully rendered tribute to this subgenre, thank you for sharing it with the world!

Great vid, sir. I can forgive the internet for its many harms on the grounds that I have access to the most beautiful music ever made, even if it was produced to sell watches, perfume, and condos.

Due to Millennials and Gen Z sadly facing a lot of struggles the ambient music genre has been very popular as of late that's how I even ended up here. Joe Hisaishi was already famous to me as a lover of anime but to find music from the likes of Hiroshi Yoshimura was a gold mine.

What a great video! Definitely subbing. I'm curious, do you know anything about Hosono's mid 90's label FOA Records? I've been trying to find information on it and it seemingly doesn't exist on the internet. Been obsessed with the artist Dream Dolphin recently, would love to learn more about that label.

I wonder if the boom in popularity came partly from lofi's rise to popularity as well. To me several of these sound like basically an old school lofi and I'm planning on looking them up and adding the songs I like to my lofi playlist

damn ... i love this rabbit hole, best story for music genre ever ! My 1st true ambient artist is Kitaro w Far Oasis album . Little story how i found him, it was either because i was already listening to Koto , garry numan or was searching for background music for DND desert/oasis , mostly i thought ambient music was for atmosphere like without melody, just realistic soundscape or there was lounge music like at a bar. So after listening dozen times to Pink Floyd and Vangelis i was so refreshed! Now i found lots of more artists like Far East Movement where Kitaro was part of the band Geoff Bastow - The Av Conception Giorgio Moroder - Midnight Express Jeff Newmann - Technospheres Nature And Technology Laszlo Bencker - Lady Robot Edgar Froese - Stuntman Tho i should say my true 1st ambient experience should be Ambientheaven - sound of forest by mood music I wanted some atmosphere so asked Pa to buy this and another forest cd While one was true background music w rain drops and birds was a bit boring.. This Ambientheaven was fantastic ! its sad its expensive and hard to find nowadays but here are several albums from a series which are also great, but not to be able preview it its tough choice to blindly buy
