I know it might be like winning the lottery if you see my message but I’ll give it a shot, I would like to ask you if you have any any idea where I could find the miniature Technics turntables in Tokyo. Any help would be great since I’m going to be there this weekend. Thank you for your time and all your videos are amazing.

It got REALLY bad- to the point where I was giving A/V advice in the comment section, the next video would fix some issues by the same person, and then they would just contract out another amateur gig worker. The main focus of public interest in this topic seems to be the curiosity of the large number of retro vending machines, but the most significant feature is that the owner, Mr. Saito, does his best to make sure that visitors to his used tire shop enjoy their time waiting for their tires to be changed, and that those who come from all over the country to use the vending machines also enjoy their time there. This is why he has been reported in the Japanese media. He spends a lot of time and effort repairing old vending machines, they have even replaced the lights with LEDs to conserve electricity, making various efforts to save money so that customers can purchase products at low prices, preparing large quantities of food so that they can enjoy the delicious food, and maintaining the vending machines while dealing with the pranks of the mindless. It's great to serve others, even at the cost of one's own self. And John and his crew did a great job 👍

I'm so happy you get this - what a lot of foreign KZbinrs going here completely miss is the WHY and HOW - and THAT is the real story. If Saito-san didn't have this drive and passion for resurrecting these vending machines, none of it would exist so I home more people have a greater appreciation for what he's built and visit to support his effort to keep the past alive in these machines for us to experience. Thank you!

The thing that astonished me is that many of the food machines requiring fresh deliveries still have companies around servicing owners of their machines with refills, we wouldn't have that in other places. That and the curry rice machine that's the last one of its kind in operation is something that should be of note for visitors visiting there.

I asked about that. There’s a company in Ebina (Kanagawa, same prefecture) that provides him with it but it’s a special order, business relationship just to keep the machines going. It’s not just Saito-san. His passion fuels it though. There are a lot of players who don’t want to see them die out and THAT is a good story.

I've seen a few other youtubers go to this place to show what stuff could be found in it and it always felt fascinating since the machines are old and there are even items in them that were also available from many years ago. Seeing this video of yours and hearing why the owner made this place a thing made it much more amazing. I do hope it last for a long time and they get more machines as time passes. It really is like a museum but unlike most museums where you can just look, here you can experience using the machines as well. Wish i could go to Japan to see this myself someday.

This is something as someone who has an interest ( and a job ) in electronics repair on one side and now game dev ( tech artistry ) on the other, learning how things operate and then using that information to repair other of the same thing is really interesting to learn about. You almost become a surgeon in a way, especially with larger machines like the ones at this lot, that require such care and attention to both what you know and how you do it, that you really do need that passion for it. Plus it helps while your working on ones that you can step to the left of you for a meal in-between, especially if your spending quite a few hours repairing one.

I love the way you saw this, so true. I think one of the great thing about Japan’s too heavy demographics is the way the country can both accelerate the gas on progress and also spam the breaks and look back too. The concept of MOTTAINAI is strong and one of my favorites. Don’t be wasteful. If it still works, it can still be useful. Don’t take more than you need. These machines still work well and serve its purpose and we remember that with places like this. (I’m not getting that VR headset 😂 … yet)

Saito-san couldn't put it into words, but I think I can: these vending machines are the intersection of human history, innovation, industry, endeavor, and love. They nourish and sustain the customers and businesses that support them, and they are a window into human ingenuity and engineering, not just now but spanning decades. It's like looking through grandma's kitchen and grandpa's garage, seeing the gadgets and recipes they used to bless the family and build society over so many years, and they are STILL going! They really are remarkable, as is the collection. I hope someone else will take over after he retires, because this place is just, plain, cool.

This curry rice vending machine is totally amazing! The way it opens the bag blew my mind. So simple yet so effective :3 Actually I think that because those machines are on the 'analog' side of technology, it's even remotely possible to keep them alive. If it would be all about electronics, then it wouldn't be so "easy" to maintain. I dare to say it would be impossible for someone not affiliated with big companies.

Maintaining the machines is one thing, but I wonder where Saito-san gets all the food, I mean that coke in a bottle! Wow! I loved this episode John, nice one, thanks!

Wow! This is really great. The ingredients are of a decent quality considering it came from a vending machine. Nice video! 😊

The proprieter, Sato san is a visionary, for sure. How often does one sit in an automotive shop, dying of boredom? Great work, John & Scotty -!!

I still remember that one of your first videos (I think the 2nd one) on the old channel is vending machines and this collab with Scotty is the next level for it, kind of like how Japanology Plus is a more advanced Begin Japanology.

S/o to John Daub for getting the owner’s permission to film the machines at work! This episode of Only In Japan is awesome! Always wanted to see the insides of these after seeing a few videos on KZbin.

If I had one more day I’d have shown a few more. Saito-san is quite busy and I’m so thankful for his time and generosity. The Popcorn 🍿 vending machine is in Scotty’s channel 😉 I let him have that exclusive. It’s pretty amazing!

hose sounds are part of the experience, the nostalgia! I might have spent a long time trying to pump up the volume on that - haha! As Saito-san cares a great deal about his machines, I do for this content. Can feel the environment. I didn't want to use music too much but it does make the video more enjoyable if I could work out both. So glad it's up now!

I respect Mr. Saito, especially with the fact that he has to improvise parts. The food looks good too, especially the curry. Looking forward to what you might come up next. ^^
