Some fans hated his rebellious nature. A Robin smoking cigarettes? Stealing? Jason Todd was very different character before the crisis. He was just like Grayson which is fine for comic fans who hate change. The shift in attitude post-crisis was too much for them. It's funny because the Anarky character would have become the next Robin after Jason Todd. The Tim Drake character made his debut just a few months earlier and closed off this idea for good. I can only imagine how fans would have reacted to Lonnie Machin as Robin.

I think it could’ve been good If there was no villain behind it, it just happens. Like Jason Todd gets a blood transfusion after a bad fight and gets HIV from it, if a villain was behind it believe it would lose its meaning. You would have Batman dealing with his actions as he indirectly caused this by taking him under his wings and he has to slowly watch as his surrogate son just withers away in front of him. And when he passes you finally have a new Batman who is even more jaded and depressed than ever before an emotional shell of a man one who has seen loved one after loved one destroyed, this is Batman being broken by pure human despair, I think it would speak to how destructive AIDS is if it went like this.
