I’ve heard that a lot of upcoming producer these days tend to use plugins like Soothe 2 and Smoothe Operator on almost all of their individual instrument tracks as their standard go-to plugin. And even though it works it tends to de-harsh too much of everything and it makes the sounds and tracks feel lifeless. But in this special case it really becomes in handy. BTW: I’ve seen a video about Smoothe Operator and a bug where Babyaudio updated the plug-in. There is the opportunity of changing the plug-in between Classical and Modern mode, where the classic mode introduces strange sound fragments and distortion and the modern mode gets rid of the strange behavior. So people should really use the modern mode, not the classic mode.

Is there any difference between manually trimming the 808s transients to give the kick space like he does, and just sidechaining it? Using laser sidechain for example does pretty much the exact same thing right?
@Alex-wl6oc2 жыл бұрын
Yes. manual volume automation does have more control in the sense that a compressor's release control is always dependent on the input (the kick). to get more control using a compressor, shape the input signal (the kick) by only letting in the top end of a kick, creating a sharper attack and release of the compressor since low end is usually more sustained, making the compressor clamp down for longer than maybe needed.

JJ is one my of favs, and I’m never opposed to knowledge. But I found using Ali’s method more effective, which is just EQ’ing the kick to taste so that it just cuts through your 808 🤷🏽♂️ less work, less plug ins. Plus you don’t lose any 808 information 😁🤝🏽
@DreTheEngineer7 ай бұрын
EXPLAIN OR SEND LINK
@diemturner57554 ай бұрын
@@DreTheEngineer He did explain it. That's about as straight forward as it gets. EQ the kick so that it occupies its own space where the 808 isn't to inhibit masking effects between the two. That's what the EQ is for. That's how EQing has been done forever and should be done as a SOP because if you don't, instruments are going to mask one another all over the place creating a smeared, foggy and undifferentiated mix with poor instrument separation. What's the alternative? Setting up sidechain ducking EVERYWHERE as an alternative method of equalization that you could equate to a 1-band broad frequency dynamic EQ of sorts? I suppose you could do that in theory and I'm sure you could make it work but, it wouldn't be my first choice.

Isn't using the Cableguys Kickstarter 2 (and now VolumeShaper in Shaperbox 3) , in audio mode, exactly the same thing as trimming down and copy / pasting on every 808 manually? You can see the waveform of the actual kick layered over your 808 and make a custom curve just as precise. No?

can someone please explain the 2dB thing he mentions in the video because i really don't get it
@bluedev1495 Жыл бұрын
I interpret that he is using automation to drag the transient down -2db since he doesn’t need both the kick and 808 pumping at the same time because they cover the same part of the low end spectrum. So he saves 2db of headroom by carving 2db off the kick or 808 (forget which one he said he does it on). By saving that headroom he can then crank his mix up higher before the kick and 808, start to clip or distort in the limiter

How is he using Soothe2 and MV2 as parallels and sidechains? Both those plugins have latency. Soothe2 in particular is very CPU intensive. I’m using Logic X. What am I missing here? Great video yet again btw.
@jonmovtxan65562 жыл бұрын
I don't think you are missing anything. I once tried replicating his template, and one of the conclusions I came to is that he has a beast of a computer.
@obangamuzik2 жыл бұрын
Idk how logic works but in protools you can turn on delay compensation that’s for plugins with latency and it keep everything in sync
@georgetmusic2 жыл бұрын
Soothe isn’t parallel he uses it for side changing. For mv2 he has a parallel aux that he sends best elements to
@Nightmoore2 жыл бұрын
Latency shouldn't effect anything you're doing while mixing. When you hit the spacebar in your DAW and start playback, the DAW should automatically calculate how much time is needed using delay compensation so everything stays in sync. Latency becomes an issue when tracking instruments or vocals. That's the whole deal with fighting latency. That also includes trying to play something in using MIDI. Once you've got a bunch of plugins and effects going, it's nearly impossible to punch in and start recording a guitar solo or play anything that requires you being locked into the groove. Playback though? Not a big deal.

Basically just automate the volume of the 808 everytime the kick hits so that they don't both hit at the same time. You can use Fruity balance and automate the volume or you can automate the fader from the mixer. You can also automate the low end of the 808 everytime that the kick hits to simulate what soothe2 does. It just takes so much time to do all of this.
