The Buu saga is often the most criticized arc in Dragon Ball Z. A common notion amongst Dragon Ball fans is that it started strong and ended strong with the middle being the weakest. In today's video, we examine the villain Kid Buu. While he was a simple villain in concept, it's this simplicity that improved the course of the Buu saga. In this video, Qaaman analyzes how Kid Buu SAVED The Buu Saga from it's weak middle section. This involves the incorporation Goku, Vegeta, Fat Buu and Mr. Satan (Hercule) himself.

I actually liked Fat Buu as an antagonist. He really feels like nothing like the previous big bads, but in the best way possible. I love villains who are *deceitfully* dangerous. Like yeah, when you first see the guy, you first go *"really? THIS Kirby reject? This is our bad guy?"* But then he one shots Dabura, a Super-Perfect Cell level character without effort &-... Yeah, this guy is terrifying & the fact that his design does a good job making you think otherwise is kinda genius. But yeah, it'd be very weird to have him stay for the long-run, so I'm glad we got Kid Buu in the end (Budokai 2 war flashbacks notwithstanding)

The Great Saiyaman and World Tournament Sagas were good buildups. The Babidi and Majin Buu Sagas were action packed and emotional. The Fusion Saga (In Retrospect) was a drawn out mess. The Kid Buu Saga picked back up, with an action/emotional thrill ride.

I think the main problem with the Buu Saga is ironically everything after. The Buu Saga was supposed to be the end for Dragon Ball but because it wasn't, it just gets worse as time goes on. Take SSJ3 for example. I've seen everywhere people calling the form useless, but in the context of the Buu saga, it absolutely wasn't. SSJ3 was supposed to be the final stage of SSJ that unlike 2 was supposed to be reserved for special people in special circumstances like being a fusion or afterlife training. Since Goku had it, it basically put him in an entire world Vegeta could never reach and so he just had to admit Goku was better than him. In modern dragon ball, Vegeta isn't like that anymore. He's regressed to wanting to surpass Goku again and while it makes sense for Super's story. That's just one way the Buu Saga has been hurt over time.

I know Laughingstockmedia made a video about it a while ago. Buu's regeneration is so powerful it makes almost immortal.

This is an interestingly positive perspective. A lot of good points are made. Story-wise as you said, it brought about redemption for some characters. As far as my common sense goes, buus power regressing and Gohan being left out of the picture are hard for me to let go. Just feels like Toriyama built up the situation a certain way and then just changed his mind multiple times. I also have always liked fat buu as an antagonist because he felt like an old school Toriyama character that was wacky and funny. Juxtapose that with his initially murderous and evil ways and he's just as unpredictable as kid buu and maybe more interesting because fat buu does have the intellect to present that contrast. Cool video! I enjoyed the buu arc regardless and you made me think about the good points kid buu did bring to the table.

Exactly you get it mate, Buu is his own independent type of Villain in comparison to who became before him which makes his Arc different, I disagree with this video summary bit describing Fat Buu - to Super Buu. We learn why Fat buu is the way he is, he absorbed Kais. I think what is forgotten AGAIN unlike previous villains Buu is based on being a Magic Entity hence why ordinary combat fails against Fat Buu. Even Babidi & Bibidi are Wizards, it's even in their names Bibidi, Babidi, Buu its a spell from one of those Disney cartoons can't remember which the reference is from maybe Cinderella or something. Plus he is a demon, Demon & Magic is otherworldly stuff so its only natural to have a different style of Villian. We still don't know much about Buu's origins and Dragon Ball has only lightly touched on the Demon Realm so its yet to be fully explored in a greater sense. I LOVE THE BUU SAGA it doesn't deserve the kind of hate it seems to get. I can talk all day about this Saga but the bases of the Buu saga was to introduce us to its expanded universe the elements of magic, fusions, beings/entities other than Aliens such as Kai's & Demons/Wizards, other Realms & well a new style of Villain as you could say Buu was a stepping stone or a leap onto Godly like powerful fighters as an introduction. Since Beerus was aware of Majin Buu Eons ago who knows perhaps Buu might of been a former God of Destruction who was let go from the ranks for being too chaotic? Again Buu's true origins would make a fascinating chapter or special in this series.

Kid Buu was actually the real Majin Buu. Fat Buu was really one of the Supreme Kais absorbed by Majin Buu so he adopted the child-like, carefree personality that the Kai had.

I always had a soft spot for Super Buu, but I think that was primarily influenced by his portrayal in the Budokai 2 game. They weirdly give him more character there than in the show. You could feel it in the voice acting.

I've always liked using the "What-if" absorptions that were available. You'd think Xenoverse would've done something like that since their whole thing is a bunch of "What-if" scenarios. Though something never sat right with me when Super Buu died, the frantic begging he makes towards Vegeta when he realizes what he's doing and the line "Please let go! If you tear out those attachments I won't be *ME* anymore!" made me feel a bit bad for the guy. The pained screaming as he was trying to keep himself together both on the inside and outside didn't help. If you think about it he was pretty much the only form of a conscience for Kid Buu. He didn't just die, he literally ceased to exist.

Fat and Super Buu are kinda similar but opposites of each other but all forms of Buu have one thing in common: BEING SIMPLE. They aren’t the grandiose type of villains, they have no goals, they just do things when they feel like it or it interests them. Fat Buu when he first came around, he’s the most tame and reasonable, preferring to “play” by causing destruction (but can change that habit), eating food/candy or sleeping. Super Buu however, is strangely *close* to that of a Saiyan’s actions, preferring to fight someone to occupy himself and that’s it but make him BORED he’s gonna fuck shit up. But his difference is to absorb anyone that he deems a threat to his life and becomes stronger and smarter but still with no real goals. Like with Frieza, he’s an EVIL motherfucker but he as a goal in life by fulfilling his duties as the “Emperor of the Universe” and has an interest of being a Planet Trader, being a businessman, living to CONTROL. He’ll only kill you if you meet with failure or make him angry enough during his missions. For Cell, his goal is to fulfill his function: PERFECTION. Once he gained that, he transitions into a goal to that of an obsession for combat and entertaining himself, to keep testing his strength (unlike Super Buu), a twisted version of what Goku wants in life in satisfaction. He wants to battle strong opponents who can push him to evolve like a Saiyan can and if an opponent can’t provide that satisfaction, he can just simply kill them for their failures. Finally, Kid Buu. He’s just simply an agent of chaos. He just fucks shit up just because he CAN and laughs about it. A wacky being you can’t predict what he’s gonna do and it shows to how he moves and acts. He doesn’t fight for a purpose like the other main villains, he just DOES for the hell of it too! He sleeps yes, but when he wakes up, it’s lights out for you! Understand that Super Buu and Kid Buu on how they perform differ; Super Buu fights to kill time, while Kid Buu…just GOES FOR IT, he don’t give a fuck. IT’S ON SIGHT. Fast or slow, it don’t matter to him. And to me, Kid Buu is just pure BRUTAL FUN.

@@DarthDarkrai To help you out, Majin Buu isn’t really a demon, he’s a like that of a Djinn (A genie but he doesn’t do wishes). When you think of “Demon”, you think of beings like Dabura. As for the reference, yes, you nailed it, it’s Cinderella. Also, yes, Majin Buu as an entity still remains as a big mystery. It would be cool that if Uub tries to rediscover himself, he’ll probably want to understand how his power works and how he was “born” in his previous life. Cause from what we understand, Buu is being of pure destruction and evil gathered into a living thing (Like Janemba) and also, Buu didn’t get his “God Ki” according to the Super Manga until he absorbed the Kais since they were in him for so long.

@@RichDXtreme247 I'm aware of how Buu was able to obtain Godly Ki due to his absorption abilities we can definitely say Buu is an entity for sure as until Good Buu split and created a life for himself on Earth it's fair to assume Kid Buu was the only one of his kind to ever exist. Kid/Evil Buu has been referred to as a Demon across the series, Anime and games at times that's why I described him as one. ALSO it's literally in his name Majin means - One of Supernatural Abilities and translates into Demon/Demonic/devil/Magic person. Until Buu has a in-depth origins story guess we will never know how he truly came to be, for all we know it could've been demon realm magic/influences that had created Buu. I think it was only recently like maybe the past 5 years, that Toryiama from memory, had retconned that in fact it was Bibidi who had found Buu not made him as once suggested in the anime years ago, can't remember exactly when or if it was stated in the super Manga during Moro saga? But yeh Buu's origins sure is fascinating to explore the more the DB universe expands since Beerus inception into the series

kid buu is the strongest non fused buu. You cant really count the fusions like ultimate buuhan because technically ALL versions of buu can absorb and fuse with people, including kid buu, which is how fat buu was created to begin with. Basically Buu is his strongest and original form, all other forms are just personality disorders because of his ability to fuse with people. So yes, ultimate buuhan is the strongest buu form, but for all intents and purposes kid buu is still capable of absorbing goku, vegeta, gohan, or anyone else to also achieve that form. To me, its like saying "perfect cell is stronger than imperfect cell". Well ya he is, but he is the same being. The difference between buu from cell/freiza is that buu doesnt transform, he absorbs in order to change forms and personality but essentially he is the same being. Its not quite like a fusion either, where vegito is a completely different being from goku or vegeta.

@Anonymous99666 super buu is a fusion/absorption of fat buu. Its bot a matter of which buu is strongest. They are all the same and they all originated from kid buu and they all revert back to kidd buu. This is why super buu was so afraid of having fat buu removed from his cacoon. Him getting stronger or weaker wasnt the issue to super buu. It was about correcting his personality disorder, which only happened because of the kai. Kid buu is literally PURE evil, so all of his personality disorders were because of the good that was in the kai. Even super buu had some good in him because of that. So when that was removed, but simply returned to his original state. I cant stress this enough, super buu is kid buu. Fat buu is kid buu. All the buus are kid buu. Super buu and fat buu are simply personality defects tainted the pure evil of kid buu. What makes kid buu the strongest enemy in DB is his absorption technique. It LITERALLY does not not matter if buuhan was the srongest form of buu, because at any point kid buu can absorb gohan aswell. Infact, you can say he did because kid buu and super buu are the exact same being...

For all the story issues the Boo Arc has had through and through, the final battle against Pure Majin Boo is one of the best fights in the series. After all, it helped to give character arcs to a close and everyone had a role to make it happen, which is something I cannot say for other final fights such as Goku vs. Freeza and Gohan vs. Cell.

The Buu saga introduced fusion, Super Saiyan 3 & Ultimate Gohan only for all that to be absorbed into Buu. Not even Goku & Vegeta fusing into Vegito could stop Buu(well it was to get the absorbed fighters out of Buu). In the end, what kills the evil buu? A SPIRIT BOMB. That trope of "if fusion fails then use the spirit bomb" was used for Omega Shenron & Merged Zamasu.

The one thing I love about Purest Form Buu (aka "Kid Buu" in the localization supplementaries) is how uncontrolled he is. He's the original demon that existed for time immillennial, the force of chaos summoned by Bibidi. Compared to initial Majin Buu and Evil Majin Buu ("Super Buu" in localized supplementaries, not to be confused with Pure Evil Majin Buu, dubbed simply "Evil Buu" in localization) who could at least be reasoned with through their connection to Mark (Evil Majin Buu held off from killing Videl simply for being Mark's daughter), Purest Buu has _nothing_ holding him back and will simply destroy you because he feels like it and he finds it funny. In his debut alone he accomplishes what all other villains at that point failed to do and actively destroys Earth. On top of that, the anime then has him go beyond his previous form finding the Heavenly Realm by _going straight to the afterlife and getting ready to render everyone there deader than dead well before Zeno pulled that,_ only being stopped by his sensing Goku's ki and showing up in the Realm of the Kais. You covered a lot of these points here, but that really speaks to how well Purest Buu was executed. His death is still pretty great for me too, what with Goku lampshading how even he got tired of all of Buu's form changing. Plus he came back as Uub years later, so that's nice.

Honestly, I look at Buu's voices like this: The original Japanese highlights the immillennial MANchild that Buu is, being able to speak full sentences but still being a giant immature guy who has no concept of money and can be easily swayed; and the English dub highlights the manCHILD part of him, speaking primitively and having a high-pitched innocent voice to go with it, still easily swayed and with a massive sweet tooth and not being all that bright, yet can still be clever when he wants. 2. Goku always seems to be the one blamed for Gohan, Goten, Trunks and Piccolo's deaths, _*but what the hell was stopping Vegeta from making a swoop down and saving at least two of them?_ What, because he was behind Goku, he couldn't make it down in time? His hands were just as empty as Goku's, what's stopping him?

I love the Buu saga honestly, all of it I think it does a good job at deconstructing the notion that as the new generation grow up, that the old generation should just step aside and let them handle things alone instead of helping to solve the problems beside them We see this as, even with buu kicking around, Goku's way to deal with it wasn't to defeat him himself, but instead to train up inexperienced kids to fight buu themself. Still maintaining the idea that he needs to step aside completely for new fighters to take his place, which was a mistake that caused everything to go wrong. and even with Gohan, who was trained for many, many years, still is not nearly the fighter that Goku and Vegeta are and nor does he really even want to be either, only doing so out of obligation. Where as cells were a representation of the sins of older generations, Buu, in all forms, represents both the potential and the issues on relying on youth alone. Fat Buu was a representation of abused and misguided youth, a genuine good soul that acts evil due to being fathered by bibidi and babidi and only being shown and allowed to act in cruelity. When Mr Satan took him under his wing, he was genuinely improving and learning morality. It was only when he was reshown cruelity by the shooter that he backtracks into malice, with evil buu being a representation of the trauma inflicted onto Buu by his previous masters. Super buu, then, being the fusion of the innocence of Fat buu and the trauma of Evil buu, is, more than Kid Buu, THE perfect monster that bibidi and babidi wish to mould Buu into. Looking the part of a strong monsterous being, acting the part, and unlike kid buu who is purely chaotic, being just docile enough to be potentially controllable. Except without a master, he only seeks hedonistic joy through eating and fighting as without any guidance, he returns back to what's comfortable, which was the cruelity that his previous masters made him live in and what were raised in. Buutenks and eventually Buuhan represent represent how, without guidance or direction, and with immense power, that youth and potential become arrogance. The biggest difference between him and Cell (while admittedly, they're quite similar) is that Cell believes he's perfection in how he is, that his potential is secondary to the fact that he's already perfect as is, whilst Buuhan believes it's his potential for growth due to his absorptions that make him perfect, that his potential is primary to his perfection. and finally, Kid Buu is the representation of Youth's full potential to change and alter the world, but due to misguidance and being taught nothing but cruelity, and now being completely devoid of Guidance in life, can only cause and can only want to cause devastation unapologetically so. Goku wants to see kid buu reborn as a good person because desires to see the potential of youth change the world for the better, and bemoans how despite the potential that Buu holds, he can only cause destruction and desires nothing else. I can go on, but looking at the Buu saga as being a warning about the over reliance on and the misguidance of youth by elders, it becomes so much better of an arc that it's wild

This means that Kid Buu as the last Buu was always going to work narratively regardless of whether he was the strongest Buu or not.

i enjoyed super buu before he absorbed anyone the most. he was so unhinged you never know what hes gonna do next, he had such a threatening presence. and i loved his fighting style. once he absorbed the others he became too calm though. kid buu is worse than super buu and fat buu imo. better than absorbed super buu, but still a downgrade. any buu couldve easily fulfilled the same role with some motivation. super buu was already angry enough after losing to gohan to go on a rampage. i like the idea of kid buu, but he wasnt that great as a character. once he shows up you know all thats left is to kill him since hes just evil. i know many like that about him but he could never last more than a few episodes.

the fusion is just unnecessary plot-wise. Vegito is just overpowered and doesn't serve the story at all and gotenks is merely filler arc, he was never supposed to be anything more. The plot would have been better if the potara didn't exist and the fusion dance wasn't feasible unless you're under a certain power level, characters of vegeta and goku's power shouldn't be able to do the fusion dance because their power shouldn't allow them to fuse or something, just figure out a reason to not let powerful characters fuse. They could have had mystic gohan do what vegito did. If it was up to me i'd have let goku and vegeta dead, and gohan be the main character. That way when the battle takes place on the kais planet goku and vegeta could join in the fight and it would still enable the spirit bomb

Nah, Fat Buu's entrance in the German dub with the original Japanese music was still pretty lit for me. He was really creepy. I'd say he wasn't that interesting anymore after his fight against Vegeta. Regarding Super Buu, I actually find him quite uninteresting from the get-go. I was intrigued by Grey Buu, but, at least today, I find Pink Super Buu quite disappointing. Blowing up that guy from the inside was pleasantly "scary", though.

I think the moment Buu started absorbing people, the story weakened. Once everyone is back out, it picks back up. Gohan went from primed to kick ass to jobbing...hard. It really hurt the immersion. We spent a long time watching Gohan get...whatevered by Old Kai. ...why? In the way this went, it was pointless. Worse than pointless. It powered up the enemy. They Yamcha'd Gohan, and it was hard to watch.

I think you're too harsh to Fat Buu. I mean it's almost transparent that he won't be the final villain looking at how Android/Cell saga happened. Either someone else take over or he gets a new form. Him being a literal child who's too naive is pretty unique, and might be the only time in DBZ that diplomacy actually worked. But I mostly agree with this video. Even if it had some cool stuff I thought Super Buu parts were a mess and all over the place. The moment Kid Buu arrived felt like the story started to go into a proper direction. And how Goku defeated him without some kind of new form and just relying on teamwork is quite unique, reminded me of how he and his friends defeated Vegeta in Saiyan Saga.

I love Kid Buu. He’s my favorite. That said I really didn’t think anyone had the option that the beginning of the arc was good (I start at Majin Vegeta when I rewatch) or that any of the buus are “bad”. Fat buu was interesting to me, Super buu was had rhe coolest plot points, and Kid Buu was the coolest to watch fight cuz how he moved and his unpredictability. (Ion count evil buu cuz he got 2 eps and like a half chapter. He don’t exist lol)
