In absence of a downrigger the best way to target Kokanee or trout at depth is to use lead sinkers. However, determining exactly how deep you are can be challenging but it critically important. In this I investigate how different dodger shapes and sizes affect trolling depth.

Great video! Just ordered a lead chart and a Beer glass 👊With the depths you recorded and adding a snap weight, will that add additional depth as stated on your chart? Example, the smaller skateboard dodger 1.5mph @100'+1oz snap weight=28' depth?

Yes assuming they are additive. There is no real way to test the additive effect aside from having someone trail behind with their own sonar which I plan to do in the spring when I can get Sidra out on the water.

Very useful info. I'm sure alot of anglers going for a certain depth on a downrigger could use this to realize they should actually be 10 ft higher to correctly hit the depth. Curious if you ran (or plan to) any tests going 1.2mph? Thank you.

Now the question arises if lead and dodger are additive or somewhere in the middle? I would assume running a snap weight at a distance (30', 50', 100') in front of the dodger would make it more likely to be additive, but what about a sliding weight just 2-3' in front of the dodger? Would it be more apt to base the estimate off the combined weight of the dodger and lead snap weight or something else I wonder?

I really appreciate this information, these are questions Ive had for a long time. I have another experiment I'd love to see you do if you'd be interested. Im seeing a huge surge in glowing plastic baits for ice fishing and wonder if the glow makes a difference over a non glowing bait? like a small plastic creature bait used for trout specifically. any thoughts on if there is a difference?
