I really love those series! I've got a fair few ideas of other challenges I'd like to do - just need to find the time! It will definitely happen sometime though :)

Hi Tom. I found you on italki. Sorry for all my mistakes that I certainly do.I started learning English seven months ago. I've never learned English before. I speak German fluency, but I need (I have to) learn English, because I need a better job. My big dream is to work with at least one foreign language. I'm learning only with You Tube and everything what I find on internet. I'm very glad to hear you how you speak because some teachers on You Tube speak very slowly and clearly and I think in real life nobody speaks like that.(You speak like me in my mother tongue-much and quickly;) ) :) When you asked in this video what a foreign language is the best to start I thought in my head-Italian and than you said Italian. I smiled. It's a lovely language. So, it was nice to meet you and to see you. Greetings from Poland. Marzena.:)

Your videos are spot on. I wanted to learn German after I read A S Byatt's 'The Children' s Book'. I had very little idea about German literature (except for Goethe, Heine, Grass) and even less about the culture. Having been under British rule for centuries we have a leaning towards everything English. Germans were the villains. This book opened my eyes to the Other. I bought Neil MacGregor 's book on Germany to get an introduction. And after encouragement here, I shall be enrolling into German classes on Monday. My second reason is, I have heard it may be easier to go to Swedish if I know German, because I am a fan of Scandinavian crime fiction 😝. As an Indian, I automatically know at least 3 languages fluently - my mother tongue - bengali, hindi which is spoken all over India and English. I also understand a bit of Tamil. I just returned after a 3 month stay in Mumbai & Hyderabad where I had to talk to people in Hindi or English. Yes, it is a great comfort to speak in bengali now that I am home. I won't get anyone but other Indians in my class to practice German, so your suggestions of reading, watching movies etc. will be very helpful.

I love your videos and you are totally right about learning new languages as an adult. My stories is that I was really hate English back when I studied at school but now since I've spent time learning English in different method from when I learned at school, things have changed. In my experiences, the KZbinrs are my best friends. I am so grateful of my progress in English learning. I think the most important key is to have a ball to speak even I barely know grammar rules and making a lot of mistakes (I've learned grammars at school of course but it vanish into thin air since finished the exams). Thanks for your wonderful videos and hope to hear from you soon. Take care!

Hai parlato di amore per la cultura, oltre che per la lingua, di un paese. Ci sono aspetti della cultura italiana che non ti piacciono/non ti sono piaciuti (sulla base della tua esperienza)? :)
@TomCopeland6 жыл бұрын
Buona domanda!

When you you think a language learner is ready to join a language exchange like tandem you talked about. Maybe you could talk about that in the future for people who have never done it before.
@TomCopeland6 жыл бұрын
Good question! I think you can start from a pretty low level actually, so long as your partner speaks a fair bit of YOUR langauge so they can help you out. That said, I try to start tandems once can already hold a conversation for about 5-7 mins in class (perhaps a slightly boring conversation, but a conversation nevertheless!).
