What about me? I want to pick out the coldest day in 2022 and do a split. 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Yeah it don't get to cold in S.W. Florida. I can do splits year round. I Have caught new swarms in late December and I fed the nothing. That hive I have had for about 3 years. I do not envy your cold weather and having to over winter my bees. But I watch because it is about BEES!

Wonder if you add little more insulation on top might not have that moisture collecting under the lids

I have split one of my hive into 4 so i got 4 new queens, how can get them population to build up? For the coming nectar flow in March.?
@BlackMountainHoney2 жыл бұрын
Time and patience, plus small amounts of syrup
@won2winit2 жыл бұрын
Instead of going by cluster size you can see would hefting to see how heavy the nuc is be a better guage on colony size? Guess this could be difficult with stores being used up etc
@BlackMountainHoney2 жыл бұрын
Yeah its really inaccurate. Heaviest ones are the ones that are failing/dead.
@beehinde2 жыл бұрын
The nucs have an OMF, you could heft and look underneath the hive and look at how far down the cluster is from the bottom. I did this with a neighbour's hive, February 2021 because it looked too small from the top, my first thoughts were that it was dwindling. It later went on to produce honey at the very end of the season.

I built me a bunch of six frame boxes I tried 10 too much for my back and believe it or not 8s can be just as heavy so that's why I went to six my first year running them see how it goes
@BlackMountainHoney2 жыл бұрын
Best of luck with them. bees will like tall 6 frame stacks I bet

I had two swarm the end of September I did not think they would do anything but so far I haven't went into them but still alive one frame of bees I would say that at least three frames in there two more months of winter they may make it

Hope they make it through

@@BlackMountainHoney especially we had a two week warm up and wear it around 70 to 80° and now the highs will be 50 low than the 20s so they going to have a couple weeks of freezing weather at night again

I'm thinking about making a split this coming weekend. Too late? I'll be buying another queen from you if I do. The weather is set for mid 20's for at least the next few weeks so I can't see a problem with it. Thoughts?
@BlackMountainHoney2 жыл бұрын
Should be fine. Just make sure it's well stocked with bees and brood. Feed away from apiary

Hi, are the Jolantas a sub-species like Buckfast, Carniolan etc or is that just the breeders name? What’s the difference between the Jolanta and a Buckfast mated queens you sell? I noticed you sell a £39 and £50 mated buckfast F1, what’s the difference between these? Sorry for the questions! Just weighing up a potential supplier of mated queens for my splits next season.
@won2winit2 жыл бұрын
Jolanta is a very knowledgeable woman who runs the queen rearing unit for Murray McGregor a Scottish beefarmer based in Perthshire specialising in a Heather honey crop. After starting as a general worker in his employment she showed a natural talent, this lead to her taking an increasing interest in the job and expanded to what she does now allowing for the selection of the traits from their best stocks.

As above ^^ its the name of renowned breeder who uses a selection of Carniolan, Buckfast and some AMM
