Nice video. But the change happening upon application of electric field seems to be not correct. The molecules will break "out of plane" and point vertically to the glass plate because the molecules are polar which cause them to follow the direction of the lectric field. Almost every static pictures of this technology in internet shows this. But i am yet to see an animation which clearly describes TN, IPS and VA technologies and their differences. Once you start talking about them, this error will be obvious i think. Only IPS case have molecules rotating "in plane". What is shown here is not IPS based on the e field direction. It is also not TN based on the ON case direction of molecule. It is not VA either based on the starting direction of molecules. Basically, its wrong!

What are the prerequisites to understand the working of LCD displays? Do we first need to understand some special property of light?

You need to understand that light is an electromagnetic wave composed of an oscillating electric field and magnetic field at right angles to one another. You also need to understand polarization and polarizing filters. Otherwise, you cannot truly understand the working of an LCD display.
