The Spirit of St. Louis (1957) #WarnerArchive #WarnerBros #TheSpiritofStLouis
This Billy Wilder-directed biography tells the thrilling story of aviator Charles Lindbergh (James Stewart), who risks his life to complete the first solo flight across the Atlantic. In order to survive the journey, Lindbergh must struggle to overcome his own fatigue and the elements--ranging from ice on the wings to fog. Along the way, Lindbergh recalls his past as an airmail pilot and a barnstormer.

Surprised this movie wasn't so popular. Lindbergh feat was a team effort and Ryan aircraft team designed the best plane for success.

Designer Donald Hall was the primary designer of the aircraft, which is a highly modified version of the Ryan M-1. However, due to time limitations (60 day delivery from date of order), Hall could not address the horizontal & vertical tails, which were the same as the M-1. Because the SOSL was larger, yet the tail surfaces did not increase in size, this led to an inherent instability of the aircraft from the aspect of yaw. The plane had to be flown all the time as it wanted to wander off by itself if Lindbergh let go of the controls for even a few seconds.

Claude Ryan recruited Jack Northrop to help design the M-1. Not long after the M-1 was finished, Slim shows up, asking Ryan to make a modified M-1.

When questioned about the flight, Lindbergh always referred to the effort as “we”. He also wanted the $25,000 prize money to pay back his investors first.

I do wonder how useful that Periscope was in the end. Did Lindbergh say whether or not the Periscope was crucial at any point along his trip?

He prayed for help on his landing into Paris. This was the set-up. He then realized many hours into the flight, he needed the Lord.

Pride goes before a fall. Asking God for help works. I know from experience. But we should always do our best anyway and let him take care of the rest that we can't do.

Stewart was 49 at the time, Lindbergh 25. How ridiculous. Youth was half the story.

I don't mind. Jimmy Stewart was a legitimate aviator that learned to fly during the barnstorming era. Only a real pilot could have pulled off Lindbergh and Jimmy did it!

@@tomservo5347 So you don't mind a 49 year old man playing character who accomplished a remarkable thing at the age of 25? I respect your opinion, but I hope you appreciate the fact that the reason that Lindbergh exploded into Fame was precisely that he was an Intrepid 25 year old not an established professional. He represented America's confidence and daring. So it's as if Muhammad Ali at the peak of his greatness as Cassius Clay was being played by a 49 year-old

actually the movie was quite accurate. but the directors ruined it by casting a 52 year old into the role of a 25 year old.
