For me the reason why he's the GOAT is because he is just elite in all areas of the offensive play coupled with incredible continuity at the same time, dominating world football for 12+ years. If we look at the all time greatest like Pelé, Maradona, Ronaldo, Zidane, Cruyf, Di Stefano, etc. they are either elite strikers or elite playmakers. Messi is the only one in the history of football who is both. Had Messi scored 50% less goals in his career he would still belong in the list as one of the all time greatest, and vice versa, had he created 50% less chances for his team he would still be there.

There's one thing I need to corect, because the Argentinian press gives off the wrong impression of what the country's feelings on Messi were. Even when his reputation with the national squad was at his lowest point, the average and common man loved him and the people who hated him were a very small minority of the lot, but, and this is important, Argentinian sports press is pretty anti-Argentinian, and also kinda really really dumb, so a lot of it was very against Messi and against Argentina succeeding in sports in general. Considering there is at least 21 world champions who have more world titles then Messi we only consider MVP's of the national team as those with back to back titles as those who would rank higher then Messi. Cristiano Ronaldo has everything here but a world title but he is made a big enough impact despite not being world champion with Portugal. So really Messi is 7th at best.

@@captainfalconmain6576 I have to dispute the claim for Messi being the goat of the sport as false as Pele was a revolutionary and iconic player and historically speaking Brazil has been the best men's team in the world so they produced players who also won more world titles and been more decisive then Argentina which also lacks less world titles then Italy and Germany. Argentina among the 8 world champion nations only ranks 4th all time. Messi as a world champion for Argentina would only rank 22nd all time given he only won 1 world cup in Qatar. Overall the lack of world titles is a major argument missing for the goat debate. Perhaps he and Cristiano Ronaldo been the best for the 2010 decade, Messi best for Barcelona and Argentina topping Maradona and Cristiano Ronaldo the goat of Portugal. But neither one of them is good enough to dethrone Pele from the 1 position. Yes all fans have preferences and opinions based on taste which is subjective to playing style, but in terms of resume, skills, accomplishments, world titles, impact Pele is the most complete player in the history of the game

I'm a Messi fan myself, but I love football and I think every true football fan should take a look at my comment. Please don't skip it. I've some points to make here, let me explain: 1) Don't underestimate the Euro Cup. Throughout the history, 80% of all teams played in semi-finals/finals of the WC are European countries. Winning Euro Cup is almost (ofc a bit easier though) as difficult as winning the World Cup. Winning this World Cup cannot win the debate. It's just being brought up by the media as if this WC title completes the GOAT debate. Don't just follow the popular opinions, think critically. 2) Stats don't show the full picture. They are just different types of players. Ronaldo has fewer assists. dribbles, free kicks, goal/game ratio, and passing. But these can be explained too: *Can you say Ronaldo cannot give assists? Ridiculous question. Ofc he can. During Man Utd he was the best midfielder in the world. Has more assists than both Xavi and Iniesta combined. Ofc, during Madrid his role within a team was totally different, and giving assists was not his main job. *Dribbles? Common guys. It's just ridiculous to even think that Ronaldo is not a great dribbler. Yeah, during Madrid era dribbling was not his main focus. If he wanted to just dribble for nothing, he can gain more dribbling stats. Madrid tactics does not allow him dribble as often as Messi does at Barca. *Free kicks? It's just in the last years he stopped scoring free kicks. But Messi also was not scoring free kicks initially, right? Ronaldo is the best long distance free kick scorer in the history. Messi and Ronaldo free kicks are just different. Ronaldo scores Rockets and Knuckleballs, but Messi mostly score Curved Shots. *Goal/game ratio? This one is just obvious. during Ronaldo's first several years at Man Utd his main role was just to go and break the defense by his runs and skills and crossing. Goal scoring was not his main job. But during Madrid period, if you check yourself, they Goal/Game ratio was not that different. many times Ronaldo was literally scoring in almost every game. *Passing? Guys, Madrid, United, or even Juve are not like Barca. They don't do so many passes. And even if there are short and long passes, it's not Ronaldo's job. If Messi gives a lot of short and long passes, it's good for him. But we all know how Ronaldo is so good at few-touch passes. Please, let's just not underestimate him too. 3) Being Ronaldo is much more difficult than being Messi. And still, Ronaldo is handling well all these hate and bias towards him during all these years while Messi is being praised by the media whenever it's possible. Even FIFA themselves praise Messi just by default all the time. Nobody blame Messi for anything. Everybody blame Ronaldo for everything. And still, Ronaldo proved his many many times. 4) 3 UCL titles in a row. Man, if you say this achievement worse than or is nothing compared to the World Cup title, then you are being too biased. No other team ever won the UCL even 2 times in a row. And let's remember that . Some people here will say, "oh, but Messi won 4 Ballon D'ors in a row". Guys, let's be honest and not lie to ourselves. There is no way Messi deserved the 2010 Ballon D'or over Iniesta and Sneijder. If Modric won 2018 Ballon D'or over Ronaldo, then by the same logic Sneijder should have won the 2010 Ballon D'or. To be honest, I never took Ballon D'or seriously when it comes to assessing a player. I'm not saying that Ronaldo is the GOAT. In fact, in my opinion both Messi and Ronaldo are worthy to be called the GOAT. In my opinion, They are just different types of GOATS.

Why did he need the World Cup? Like I never really got into football but I have always respected the best in any sport or metric. But the Ronaldo Messi debate, it doesn’t make sense for me. As someone looking in from the outside it’s a landslide victory for Messi. So as someone who does invest a lot of time into football, can you tell me why Ronaldo had an argument. From what I understand Messi has 7 Ballon D’or to 5 with more top 3 finishes. Messi has 6 golden boot’s to 4, winning 3 in a row. Messi has 6 player of the year awards, with 4 in a row, compared to Ronaldo’s 5. Messi has 2 Golden ball’s to 0. He has 8 more major trophies. 11 to 7 league trophies. Messi has 8 pachichi awards and Ronaldo 3. Messi won 9 domestic super cups of higher competition to Ronaldo’s 7. Messi won 7 domestic cups of higher competition to Ronaldo’s 6. Won the Finalissima and the Copa America getting in the finals like 3 times which sounds way better than not even getting there. Like in a awards and trophies it feels like he absolutely dominates. So then I looked at stats and Messi’s goal per second, assist per second and goal contribution per second are all higher. Messi is second in all time goals 26 behind Ronaldo who had a 2 year longer career. He is on pace to take that record also. He is first in all time assists with 92 more than number 2 Muller and 120 more than Ronaldo even though Messi has a 100 games less. Messi also holds the records for most goals in a season and most goals in a year. He set this record in the absolute all time prime of the La Liga league. So i went to like more intangibles. But even there Messi seems to make far more plays, shown to be a true leader that steers his team and dictates a game and not just a scorer. A wizard as tricky as Ronaldinho but as efficient as nobody alive or dead. He makes plays like a midfielder, like a striker, like a winger, a passer like prime Ozil. Goals and numbers were just the cherry on his game while for Ronaldo it was his whole game. People praise Ronaldo for changing up his game after the injury but Messi does that mid game? Not only that but right now, Ronaldo is failing to change his style and go with the times while Messi seems timeless and unbothered. Like I’m not even trying to debate, I respect all great masters in any sport or activity which is why I’m so interested but also confused.
