How much does logic structure our sentences, and what kind of logic should we use? In this week's episode, we talk about sentential logic: where it came from, how we connect things up systematically, and in what ways language looks like it moves away from pure logic.
This is Topic #44!

Interesting video! They use this type of logic a lot in mathematics (especially OR and AND symbols). I didn't know this stuff applied to linguistics. Great video as always!

+Corey Levinson Thanks! And yeah, there's actually a bunch of math stuff in formal semantics. One of the courses I took for doing semantics was basically just intro to set theory. It's pretty interesting to see where different fields connect up. ^_^

+Aztec Syndicalist I don't see why it's not a good idea, then! They go together nicely, and you may find opportunities within linguistics to work on programming, anyway. But I know a good number of linguistics and philosophy people, and they tend to have a really good approach to thinking about the world. Which can only help with whatever you do, including programming, should you decide you want to do that later. ^_^

Are you implying that we can understand sentences/text through logic? Does this contradict with the neural network paradigm? I am sorry if it is a dumb question!

2:00 in the online flash cartoon Homestarrunner there is a seen where a baby is studying for the baby SAT's and he says to himself "Goo goo is ga-ga. Wah wah is ga-ga. Are all goo goos wah wahs?"

+Soupy Awesome! Yeah, Homestar Runner definitely had a lot of cleverness. I should go back and rewatch some of those. Thanks for the comment! ^_^

This reminds me of Boolean operations

+Jay Reed Yeah, there's a lot in common there. In fact, in doing formal semantics, you often end up learning a bunch about set theory, Boolean operators, predicate logic, etc. So if you know about that already, it'll probably be helpful. ^_^
