A few months ago, MrBeast tried to survive being buried alive for 50 hours. He had an air system that pumped in fresh oxygen, but it got us curious- how long could someone actually survive being buried underground before running out of oxygen? So we made our own coffin and sealed box to find the answer. What's more dangerous, running out of oxygen, or being poisoned by CO2? If you fill
a box with plants or water, can it replenish your CO2 with oxygen? Let's find out!

I have several planted aquariums... I learned from setting them up that the rate a plant converts CO2 to O2 depends on the available nutrients and the available light. Another thing, the plants wouldn't start the conversion immediately when the lights came on, but after a delay of up to an hour.

Obviously, a lot of their videos are experiments/builds that ppl wouldn't be doing at home, but a lot of the things they use probably would be used by viewers so it'd be awesome if they included links to everything like Evan&Katelyn do in their videos - it's just a really nice touch tbh.

I could be wrong but my recollection from school, which was a long time ago for me, is that plants absorb C02 and release Oxygen while they are photosynthesizing, but at night the process reverses and plants release C02, probably at a slower rate, to stay alive without sunlight.
@niagargoyle
@niagargoyle 3 жыл бұрын
That’s very close, but I wouldn’t say that the process reverses; there are two processes (photosynthesis and respiration), and the oxygen/carbon dioxide variance reverses as as photosynthesis slows down and speeds up.

Did I miss where you accounted foe air volume taken up by Nate? It would be significant in the coffin size container.

So something I usually see in movies/shows is that the person has a zippo lighter to help them see. How much shorter time would you have with the flame eating up the oxygen?

I prefer the less scripted videos as you guys seem so much more real before. Hope it works out for you guys though.

It would have been interesting to try to optimize the life support system - maybe algae-saturated waterfall with grow lights? (Photosynthesis should work way stronger with optimal lighting)

"30,000 parts per Million." Or, 30 parts per thousand, or, 3 per hundred. That's 3%. (Usually closer to 4%.) Easier to think, now.

@12:27 For plants to produce oxygen you need enough light. Otherwise the plants themselves only use up existing oxygen for their metabolism. If I were you, I would have used acrylic glass water tanks as walls (let us say for example of 2 inch thickness), filled with chlorella algae in communication with the inside.

Ngl, every time they do experiments like this it just makes me curious what other experiments they could try (comparing how much oxygen different types of plants produce, testing if they could increase the amount of oxygen plants product, etc).

I would say you missed 1 factor with the plants and that is needing sunlight to do photosynthesis so i would suggest trying it again but with the plants able to get light.

@@NFTI ah ok. I hadnt watch the 2kor one yet. I do know the photosynthesis process is really slow but i wasnt sure if the light would be what would make a difference or not
