When I sold Craftsman tools the battery for a power tool often was more expensive than the tool itself. Cars are the most wasteful ridiculous unsafe dangerous means of transportation ever invented. England was so much better off when Transportation consisted of a British motorcycle and a sidecar. You can build and run a medium-sized motorcycle for 50,000 plus miles just on the energy required to build a compact car. A classic motorcycle that you keep on the road for 40 years with the proper maintenance is a lot more greener than buying an electric car and generating all those electric battery waste that have to be disposed of. My hats off to you Uncle stew for all you do and the way you keep us informed.

My thoughts entirely, Frank. Such motorcycles are not a problem but a viable solution to pollution and congestion on our roads but are overlooked by the government and MSM as they don't fit their agenda!

This is a very informative piece Stu. Gives me a lot of ammo when dealing with EV advocates. Thank you 👍 FYI, I'm a Civil Engineer who works to build facilities on RAF bases for the UK Govt. They have released a Safety Directive that all EV charging points must be 25m away from sleeping accommodation. Likely due to the amount of spontaneous combustions that EV's are experiencing....

There seems to be this myth around the safety of EV batteries which is being perpetuated by the deep pockets of the oil industry. EV batteries may share the chemistries of the batteries in your phone or laptop but beyond that the similarities end. As I write this my car is plugged in doing its weekly overnight charge to 80% and I have no worries at all that it may burst into flames...none, zero. The ‘spontaneous combustion’ events are so rare they hardly register on the stats, but if you want the data you should know that fossil fuel cars are 11 times more likely to burst into flames than an EV. So how many times have you heard of phones and laptops bursting into flames?....That did happen occasionally back in the early days of LiOn batteries but you never hear of it now...and you won’t hear of EV fires any more soon as LFP chemistries take over from NMC (like the battery in my Kia e-NIro). As for this video...what a load of nonsense. The answer to ‘How long do EV batteries last?’....is ‘A lot longer than an ICE engine and most EV batteries will out-live the car they are in'

@@davidparker7920 The myth that green energy will be enough to power an EV Grid is patently ridiculous, when the wind don't blow and night time comes your up creek without any power. The percentage of ICE to EV is not yet equivalent so using the fire risk MO is also out of all compass, shame on you for trying to use that avenue and cold as ICE argument. What do you think is charging you car right now David, yes good old fossile fuels, lets wait and see if you can still charge it when all the power stations are non extant, Lol.

Speaking as a "Fixed route operator" of a metropolitan area, I can attest to the problems associated with EV in public transportation. For over two decades I have driven the city bus in Austin TX and it would seem that the Capitol Metropolitan Transportation Authority (CMTA)are tripping over themselves to get EV buses into service. Unfortunately, it hasn't been particularly "successful". Texas summers are long and *HOT* and the people of Austin ain't trying to ride a bus with no air conditioning. As you stated earlier, the bus can't remain on route for an eight hour shift, let alone be on the street for twenty hours as can a "diesel pusher". (We typically leave the yard and are relieved in route by another driver after eight to ten hours of driving) An EV can't pull *that* off even if the AC is left alone. I left the city of Austin a few months ago (cost of living and the uprising of violence)and have since moved to a significantly smaller town with a proportionately smaller public transportation system where the question of EV isn't even being considered. (Thank goodness for that!) In the beginning, I was a full blown fan of Elon Musk and the promise of Tesla right up to a few years ago when a hurricane was approaching the gulf coast. As I recall, Elon came on television and proclaimed that he was going to throw some switch that would send out a signal to all his cars to extend the range of his cars in order to help people get out of the path of the oncoming storm. It was at that precise moment that I fell out of love with Tesla and consequently EV in general for if "they" could "extend the range of your vehicle remotely" then "they" can *TURN OFF YOUR VEHICLE* just as easily. Learning about slave labor being used to "make the world a better place" only added to my disillusionment. Thanks for another excellent video Uncle Stu and congratulations on your award!

Many people will have missed a gov transport minister's statement last year, when speaking at an industry event - 'Personal transport is SO last century'. So, there you have it. There won't be a need for masses of new charging points, or increased generating capacity, or loads of new mines for rare minerals. EVs will be for the elite, everyone else will be cycling, walking or on public transport - if there is any, lol. As for leasing, well, remember we'll own nowt and be happy, so that's perfect.

Congratulations on the award, well deserved. I remember talking to the wife about battery life and how expensive they are to replace. If you want an EV you are better off leasing one. It is a flawed technology especially now it costs as much to charge one up as it does to fill up a petrol car. To get the raw materials is very expensive and it does create terrible working conditions for people but people ignore this as it is happening a long way away from our country.

Well done on the award , I attended a course on EV`s some 12 years ago now , when I worked for a certain motoring organisation , even then the course providers said EV is just a stop gap , not the answer , the battery life/charging trap was also part of that course , so this is something I`ve been aware of since that point . Moving forward I ended up working for a company who used an EV van as our main daily run about , stated 150 mile range ect , best range according to the vehicle charge/range on the dash rarely said more than 89 miles , in reality if we took it to the nearest dealer for service it wouldn`t make it there and back without being charged , round trip of 70 miles at that time , most on motorways and if held at 70mph you could literally see the charge meter drop . As you say it`s all smoke and mirrors , followed by the powers that be wishing to please the Greta`s of this world , easiest way of dropping carbon emissions , stop doing the school run in your car , kids are able to walk , they have legs . All those type of trips account for massive usage on the road , I know I work in transport an the difference between school days and holiday traffic in the morning is huge . I`d say at a guess nearly 30% quieter on the road in school break times !

Lots of good information today. The mining of lithium should be a major concern for all governments and to date I have not heard anything about the disposal of battery systems once they are no longer serviceable. I think this will prove to be a very serious problem in the future, an unintended consequence of our headlong rush to EVs.

The first volume-sold EV I know about is the Nissan Leaf which started life in the UK market in 2011 therefore we are only now starting to see batteries over 10 years old. In another 10 years we will get a much better understanding of the rate of deterioration of various EV makes/batteries. I would personally consider an EV at the right price, as a second vehicle used for journeys of 15 miles or less (30 miles round trip). Looking on Autotrader however, I see people typically asking over £5k for these "unsaleable" cars and I can buy a much younger/better ICE car for that money.

I can happily say that my oldest Volvo is 23 years old, and has covered around 270'000 miles. The funny thing is, when I recharge the fuel tank with petrol, I stills get the same number of miles per fill as I got when I first bought it, and, I can fill it in a rapid charger, about two to three minutes to put 450 miles in the tank, and it doesn't damage the capacity. It has another nice feature too, it doesn't self discharge petrol all the time it's standing doing nothing, how about that?! I can also go the extra distance without having to worry about keeping 20% of the charge in the tank at all times, and it doesn't refuse to take a charge if I let it stand for a few weeks or months. My newest Volvo is also 23 years old, but only 93'000 miles in the clock, so still only a chick. The important thing is, they're both over twenty years old and still performing as good as new. If takes an EV twenty years to break even, then there's little point in me buying one anyway - I'm not likely to be around in twenty years time! I think my next car could be a diesel!

Agree with you all the way. EV with batteries is not a solution. In fact, we don't need a solution yet. According to IPCC, which people have a tendency to regard as truthfull, the temperature is not rising. And have not done so for the last 7 years. The CO2 is at the same level as in 2012. We have oil and coal (if used at the same level as today) for the next 2-300 years. All accordingly to IPCC. No need to rush. We have time to think and do it right. Thank you mr Fillingham!

Morning Uncle Stuart, I'm reading this from a cottage in Scotland that we've rented for a week, we're using my wife's twenty year old Toyota Yaris that's done 113,000 miles so far , and so far we've done 750 miles this trip and have got more touring about to do , it takes me a couple of minutes to pull in and fill the tank and we're good for three or four hundred miles easily, we paid eleven hundred quid for it three years ago and it's still going well , so there's not a chance on earth I'd ever be buying an EV at the prices they command, and suffering range anxiety out in the middle of the Highlands on a tour. Great and informative video, Cheers .

Good content👍 As you say, leasing may make sense. This shifts the risk for the new buyer and makes the EV effectively a “disposable” that you never have to stump up to own. Some cells in the battery pack may fail before others - there is potential therefore to have the defective cells replaced rather than the whole battery pack. Cost savings possible. PS - my dpf-equipped diesel at nearly 80,000 miles is just run in nicely and gives me a 600 hassle-free mile range on a tank. Just a pity it is considered such a “bad thing” from noxious (unseen) exhaust pollutants. PPS - I now see EV’s beginning to populate 80 mph life in lane 3 on motorways. Times change!

The lease MO is already being practiced, in some countries they have scooters that have a charging bank and or system where you simply swipe your card into the battery bank and swap your flat battery for a fesh one. Car owners today get a warrantly for a new ev battery, but thereafter they are on their own, why do the car makers not do this for their battery as well, because they know it will wipe out any profits they made earlier, if manufacturers want to promote their products then why not least the battery, as well as a car.

Good one, Stu. There is one more thing worth considering as well from an "eco" point of view. What happens to those batteries when they reached end of life? Just to mention one study; Ambrose, Hanjiro and Jimmy O’Dea. 2021. Electric Vehicle Batteries: Addressing Questions about Critical Materials and Recycling. Cambridge, MA (there are quite a few more) There are a good few problems with that and the sheer cost of recycling as LIB technologies used for EVs do not all contain cobalt (which would increase the cost gain in recycling), the question of the economic model for recycling them remains unresolved, and there is still no real industrial sector for recycling these batteries. I'm sure that there are promises that there will be when the time comes, but the current model for second life for energy storage will see them shipped off to third world countries - who are left to deal with the problem in as much the same way we love to ship our recyclable waste to them already where they end up on a landfill, but hey - it will be their carbon/toxic problem, so we would not need to include that in our own spreadsheet...

My readin on the subject matches your comment. there's no real infrastructure for recycling at the moment. there is no incentive as there is no real profit in recycling them.

Excellent video Stu... I'll never get an EV until they 1) Improve the Battery because as most know you can only charge Lithium Ion batteries only a limited amount of times until it drops to 80%. 2) The information is NOT on ALLDATA where all ICE vehicles are available to diagnose and repair. Most like Tesla... you are forced to take it to their garages and pay up the nose or lose your car for months to wait for parts. 3) I've yet to see an EV do over 100K miles without having to replace the battery or have a degradation of the battery. 4) They still don't have an infrastructure set up to handle the demand of EV's. 5) Petroleum products are used in many products from fuel, to plastics, and cosmetics. So I will never give up my Toyota's which have well over 200K with only replacing battery, tires, and brakes during its lifetime and all the data I need is available to make any repairs.

A good friend of mine who is far better off and an idealistic chap, bought a Tesla Plaid now if you know your Teslas it's the quick one 0 to 60 in 2.9 seconds or something like that, he bought it new, I think it was in the region of 100k to buy. Anyway to cut a long story short, the Plaid model because of its performance has a shorter life if you use it to its full potential too often, being as he'd taken it to Santa Pod ran it too its limits often used it on a fast charger( it was all recorded on the onboard computer) him being an ex fighter pilot now a commercial pilot he liked the speed, anyway to cut a long story short, his battery failed, and Tesla weren't happy about fixing the cars issues, batter failier, transmission issues ect, they wouldn't replace the battery for free, or fix the other issues, even though the car was only 28 months old, so he was hit with a 34k repair bill!! Or his 65k Tesla was worthless. So after hearing his woes that finished electric vehicles for me....for good. And with the price of electricity as it is, electric cars are no cheaper to run and soon they'll be taxed by the mile, so they arn't good for the environment from their inception, they have a very limited life, poor range co2 is created to create electricity to power them, where is the sence? Oh yes its a good idea from people who fly in private jets, own super yachts, live in mansions have numerous staff. The WEF.

For work I use a twelve year old diesel-powered car, value not a lot, if I was going to spend twenty K on a vehicle it would be red with two wheels and Italian. I'd have more respect for your opinions on EVs if you had been using one for any length of time. I bought a plug in hybrid in 2014 and that convinced me to go full EV sooner rather than later and I've owned and used an EV now for over 3 years. In fact my wife and I now both have one and we don't have an ICE car at all. Believe me or not I don't recognise any of the problems you have listed, as negatives of owning and using EVs and I've done many long journeys and always charged to 100%. Accross the two cars we have a combined mileage of over 30,000 miles in the last 12 months, so it isn't because I just use a car as a run-about. In fuel alone my savings over the last 12 months have been in excess of £3,500 (I've not updated my calculations since the recent changes to fuel costs). Oh, and there is no cobalt in my newest car's battery, but every gallon of petrol you put in your car was refined using guess what? Anyway I enjoy your videos on motorcycling; I used to own a Triumph Speed Twin but sadly parted with it earlier this year. Congratulations on your award.

Very thought provoking, Stuart. Referencing Volvo, as you have, they state "Using only renewable energy, it takes the Volvo C40 30,000 miles to break even with the XC40, rising to 48,000 on the average EU mix and 70,000 miles on the global mix." Essentially, the average UK driver will see net reductions in emissions after 2.5 years of ownership assuming the average of 20K mile average for the UK driver. In areas like British Columbia, Sweden, or Norway, where 100% of electricity is produced by hydroelectric dams and wind, the owner of a new C40 could see a net reduction in emissions after 1.5 years based on 20,000miles per year. Not bad, and undoubtedly, this will be further reduced as manufacturing processes become more streamlined, environmentally friendly etc.

Congrats on the award Stu! Myself and Mrs SteveW have discussed EVs and have come to the conclusion that if/when we are forced to eventually use them, we will have only one car from that point onwards and I'll buy another motorcycle (but a cheaper runabout that I won't worry about keeping sparkly clean) rather than having the two cars we currently own (my Seat Leon 184 Diesel and my wife's Dacia Sandero Stepway, which is our current local runabout car). I would also probably lease the EV and it would be the cheapest EV I could find at the time. Then for longer trips/holidays in the UK, I'd just hire a more "premium" EV for that trip. I think this will be the best choice for us financially anyway.

It's looking more and more like you will be renting them. As for a runabout M/C you have 2 options. 1. There won't be any. 2 They'll be electric and expensive. With the same issues regarding batteries unless better ones are developed. You might need a re-think Steve. There are already a few companies renting EVs..into is one. You rent on a monthly basis everything included. So you can change to another one any month you want. Dealers will be leasing the things.

Was in a taxi in Ireland last week, a brand new electric MG. Taxi driver said he got a 20,000 (TWENTY THOUSAND!) euro grant to buy it as long as he proved he'd scrapped his old diesel Mondeo. He said there was nothing wrong with the Mondeo, still faultless but it had to go to the scrapyard. I wonder what EV sales would be without governments handing free cash (our taxes) out left, right and centre!

Very thought provoking and well put. Someone else just mentioned power tools as an example (very well put). I was using top mark power tools, removing/fitting up to a thousand screws a day in the aircraft industry. 2 to 3 years was about the best you could get out of a battery and our tool supply really looked after them. When and where have you seen anyone trying to save the planet. If 90% of people's journeys can be done in a tiny frugal 2 seater, where are they all. If a cruise ship produces more pollution than 5 million cars, why are they still operating. 300 cruise ships is an awful lot of refugee camps. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING IS BEING DONE TO SAVE THE PLANET. Just make more excuses to milk the masses.

For company car drivers, leasing a new EV is very popular - the benefit tax is much more favorable than for an ICE car (although there are no details of what the tax treatment might be after 2023/24), zero road tax, plus free electricity if their business premises have charging points. But I would guess that leasing charges will increase as the residual value of EVs declines in line with preceived remaining battery life.
